Q: Can I receive HTML e-mails on my eml client? If I can, does R380 process them?
A: HTML E-mails are viewed like a text (i.e. R380 shows all tags like the e-mail body).
Q: What kinds of encoding does it support?
A: UTF-8 и ISO-8859-9.
Q:Why phone "loses" names written in any language except English in Call List, can i fix that?
A: After switching off the phone, these names get lost from the call list. There's still no remedy for that.
Q: Is there Ericsson R380 analogue for CDMA?
A: No Ericsson didn't made such a phone.
Q: Is the alternative batt for R380? The standard batt isn't enough for me to use it.
A: Formally, there's only one batt - Ericsson BST-10 LiIon 950 mAh. I've found that there are non-original slims 600 mAh and high-capacity ones 1100 mAh. For R380e, as it is on SonyEricsson.com there's still BST-10. Those 25% of working time, that Ericsson promised, are achieved because of better battery energy saving.
BST-10 lasts for 2-3,5 days(depending on how you are using your phone). I.e. with calls time appr. 2-3 times per day about one minute) and about 2 minutes of working with organizer, while backlight is off and screensaver works phone can work about 85hrs with good signal strength. Of course if you're using no screensaver, and you are calling more intensive, using WAP etc, if your backlight setting is set to Automatic standby time can be appr. one day.
Q: What cables need i use to connect R380 to PC?
Ericsson produces DRS-10 cable. Its specifications are in User's Manual. Someone's saying that there's DRS-11 already, but i found no info about this cable on Ericsson.com. DRS-10 allows to connect Ericsson T28, t29, t39, T65, T68, R320, R380, R520, A2618, A2628 and another that are created on 3-volt platform (from Ericsson.com) and use them with Ericsson sw as modems, for synchronization, editing phone book, send sms, and connect to internet. There are some white papers on Ericsson's site about DRU-10 cable, that's a DRS-10 cable clone but for USB-port. Ericsson needs to produce sw that allows to use this cable, because standard sw uses only COM ports. Ericsson R380 can be synchronized and backed up only through cable.
While connnecting it to the PC, appears the message that OS has found new modem R380. You can connect to the internet found new modem R380. You can connect to the internet on 9.6kbps (if the operator doesn't support EFR codec).
Q: What gives me IrDA in my R380.
Theoretically, IrDA was designed to do the same as DRS-10 does. But smth wasn't made and you can use IR only for using phone as modem, set up your melodies, divert your calls, etc. You cannot synchronize or back up your phone through IrDA. R380 can send and receive vcards. Sadly, but it doesn't recognize R320's vcards, that's maybe due to the IrDA-Ultra standard, that's used in R320.
Q: Does R380 support logos/melodies throught SMS?
A: No. Logos were supported since T39/R520. But the phone can download the startup animation from PC. There's a sw on Ericsson's site, and if your phone is flashed to "R380e", it works. R380s (tried on R1B and R1D) download of the startup animation doesn't work. That animation(found while looking to the hexdump of ericsson animation sw and backup files) is situated on C:SYSTEM and is called SPLASH.RSC. You can send melodies to R380 through COM if you send AT*ESOM command, from R320 or R520 configuration program.
Q: Can i scratch the screen while normal using of R380?
A: This phone is mainly used to send calls while flip is closed. That's why after 2-3 month of using appear little dots under the keys Yes and No(if you are making appr. 20 calls per day). Dots appear under another keys later. But due to the special cover of the display these dots are seen under a certain angle.
Q: Can i use IAT-10 with R380?
A: Antenna on R380 is fixed by a screw and there's no place for the sliding part of IAT-10, there's even no hole for it. Metal base of R380 differs from the same by R320, metal antenna holder comes not so far out from the metal base, someone was tuning R320 backpanel for using it with R380.
Q: The distibutor has said that the phone has bad reception and is very slow. Is that right?
A: If the reception is not very good, then it's better than R320's(I think that's due to the bad 15th transeiver of R320, which was very unstable). It works slow only when free memory level goes low.
Q: What differences between swedish and spanian R380 are now known?
A: Don't think the differences are greater that between swedish and malaysian R320s. Only that the slider of the swdish ones is stronger .
Q: While i'm working in open flip mode, backlight doesn't switch on. Is that normal or is my phone defective?
A: That's maybe the defect of phone's fw.
Q: What's the resolution of the screen?
360x120 px - with flip opened and 120x120px in closed flip mode. Screen dimensions are 83x32mm px dimensions - 0.23.
WAP-browser window has 310x100px resolution.
Q: What can you say about apps for R380?

I was using Ericsson API...and hacked it. That's what i found:
PDA R380 is built on EPOC ER5U (Unicode) SDK with extension function pack from Ericson.
Programming is possible by accomodating the standard ER5 SDK, but i'd rather prefer WML and WMLScript (sub JavaScript)
PC sw for R380 is separated on two groups: one from Ericsson, other stubs from EPOC (connect, backup).
They are cooperating through OLE interfaces. EPOC's part is more protected than Ericsson's.
Sadly, but for normal people(read: non-hackers) the sw is "Smartphone Synchronize" only aviable.
Ericsson's part is very simple, i was reviewing those interfaces, but didn't tested, coz i was interested in EPOC part.
Access to the FS of the smartphone:
A la FAT. Two drives - С and Z.
Z - ROM Drive - programs and permanent settings. Flash or rewrite is very hard...
C - RAM Drive - current settings, phone book bases, Inbox, Outbox, Notepad etc...
You can rewrite it (of course with non standard sw), i'll say more: you can redirect access from file on Z: drive to the file on C:(so works localicalization)
1. Uploading WML's on С: drive works normal. You can open them from the "Open location" or bookmarks window. WML allows to write simple apps, like calculators, dates, etc., but you cannot save the data you've written between sessions. You can send mail or call through WML - now there's no other functions by WTAI (but they will be in R380e).
2. There's no EPOC OPL.
3. No JAVA.
4. Call log is situated on С: in file where all info about call is written.
5. PC sw hase more functions than it allows to do - you can achieve sms for example.

As you can see from this list, there are not so many commands, if comparing to R320, but main functions can be still accessible. The list was achieved using documented AT* command. I donnow only what these commands do:

Q: What lacks of phone do you know?
A: BackUp doesn't save ringtone melody.
Interesting that seconds hand of the analogue clock is visible only first 30 seconds(incl. after click on the screen).
I cannot create SMS while flip is closed(that's even good that i can delete them with c button).
While flip is opened redialling window frame gives us no access to the PDA menu.
Clock animation while redialling is bad: i cannot see how many time it waits till next redial.
I cannot select multiple records in Contacts and Notepad. I cannot even select all the records in Contacts.
There's no search function in Calendar.
When closing the flip phone doesn't remember it's state.
I cannot access to the PDA, when no sim is inserted. There's no profile, that can disable transeiver, that's bad if i need to use R380 like pda.
Menu item Switch IrDA on is only in closed flip menu.
It doesn't support HPM-10, DBA-10 and i think that it doesn't support CDT-10.
Recorder can't record while i'm answering on the call, and i can do only one record.
I cannot hear the speakerphone on some models.
Localized flash-SMS R380 doesn't understand or even doesn't display, i think it dont understand UCS-2.
That's not magnesium backpanel, it's copper one:(
Q: What's the difference between Ericsson R380s and Ericsson R380e fw?
A: e fw uses greyscale pictures. There are two new apps - "Tetris" and "Scribble". Aviable memory is 850Kb (1.3Mb by s fw). Какие недокументированные возможности известны для R380?
Q: What uncdocumented features do you know?
A: While your R380's switched off and is not charging: pressing and holding of some button (excl. No, then phone switches on), and then sliding the volume button gives us standard beep. Pressing of the recorder button - std beep, and then short click beep. Recorder then switches on and records you or plays memo. If you do that while charging phone does nothing.
If you want to format your R380 you need to:
1) switch to the english interface(if under localized, phone does nothing)
2) Take the SIM out. (or before entering PIN, if PIN entering is on), then press 112 and very fast press Yes two times, and then accepting all. After thet take out the battery(i never could normally switch R380 off after that).
There's an easter egg in R380e (or in R380s with e fw) You can see the developers names if enter in "Open Location" file:///ptest.wml
Q: What breakages have you seen?
A: 1) You can upload BackUp from other fw of the phone. I could that and my R380s stopped work as PDA. But i can do data calls and send sms from PC. Ideal, very cheap solution .
2) You can break the flip. Its changing takes about 10min.
3) You can break display. Its changing takes about 10min too.
4) You can break an antenna.
Q: Can i change R380 backpanel on the same from R320?
A: Yes, you can, but you need to tune smth. First of all you need to saw smth SIM card holder window. then saw screen directing pins, base screening-stopping walls and smth more. You need to think what to do with vibrator. The microsheme can be holded by two screws at the top of the phone, then you need to fix the screen only on the microsheme, but not on the metal base. Then you'll need to shorter smth the antenna holding edge on the plastic part of the corpse, to use normal R320/T28 antenna. If that all will give no radiation screenings, then you'll have slim corpse, aviability of using normal batteries and IAT-10.

Just read the GS88 Manual! Ericsson amazes me one more time! That was the REAL FIRST COMMUNICATOR. It could more than R380 can. First amazed me perfect GUI from Geoworks. Greyscale, it looks better than Windows 3.x and of course than EPOC. Why Ericsson used/s EPOC(GEOS is 1000% better than EPOC ER5)? Geoworks GEOS was created in those times as Symbian ER3 SIBO was already old and ER5 was still in development, but it looks like EPOC ER5 (that is normal EPOC from MC218). What can this phone? In closed mode it's a standard \, you can use it like a modem. In opened mode it has Phone app(nice, if comparing to R380's one), Phone Book app(Looks like an opened PB), Calculator, Calendar(Nice styled, is similar to MS Shedule+), Notepad, Time program(what an excellent GUI!!!), and... HTML browser(it can even print HTM pages)!!! So as you can see Ericsson degraded from GS88 Communicator with GEOS to a simple, R380 Smartphone with stubs of ER5. That is sad.

I dont really know what the difference is but my TU3 prototype is made slightly later than the TU2 ones that I have seen.
I am considering selling my TU3 prototype if someone offers me the right money for it.
