but no firmware/driver can improve the crap lens of k850 which leads to all the purple fringing. The noise of K850 photo does not contribute to more details as clearly shown in many of comparison pictures I have posted. You can alter the k850i cam driver to reduce the noise but the end result will still be worse (i.e. less detail and more blurry) than N95. This is due to physical limitation of the smaller lens size of K850. Well, SE had many of months to improve the cam driver but still quality of photo did not improve.

What makes you so sure that the optics in the k850i are bad? Small and limited, yes, but crap? I cant find the specs for them anywhere. I did find this though.
http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/news/articles/story_4740.html
Also I really don't see the purple fringing in so many photos as you say.
I too was dissapointed initially with the images I saw in review sites. Even the ones that declared the k850i the winner. However I remembered the k800i didn't produce near the image quality it does now. After seeing what the k850 is capable of in educated hands such as plankgatan there is no reason to not believe that a firmware/camdriver will refine the cam settings. They still release cam mods for the k800 to this day. Why you gotta hate so hard?

The K850 honestly have the purple fringing effect but most of it is because of the smudge on the lens. (i tried that) so clean your lens before making a pic.

i really hoped that SE use a top-notch lens for this one.

and about the NOISE:
lets have a definition of noise:

noise is a natural part of the scene. it is not the sensor that makes noise on the pic (i mean not the complete reason).

CMOS sensors produce much noise because of their structure:

----------------------------------------------------
| G | R || G | R || G | R || G | R ||
----------------------------------------------------
| B | G || B | G || B | G || B | G ||
=============================
| G | R || G | R || G | R || G | R ||
----------------------------------------------------
| B | G || B | G || B | G || B | G ||
=============================
| G | R || G | R || G | R || G | R ||
----------------------------------------------------
| B | G || B | G || B | G || B | G ||
=============================

as you can see each pixel in a CMOS sensor consist of 4 sensitive areas (each is sensitive to a particular color)

now imagine that a blue ray hits the green sensor --> as the sensor does not detect green then it will show that as a dark spot or on a common situation will only grab the green wavelenght.

CCD:

-------------------------------------------
| RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB ||
-------------------------------------------
| RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB ||
-------------------------------------------
| RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB ||
-------------------------------------------
| RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB || RGB ||
--------------------------------------------

as you can see in a CCD structure: the sensor consist of a three layer sensor each detecting it's own color and because of that the pixel produced by it won't have those dark spot effects.
and that's because the CCD sensors produce much less noise.(but asorbing electrical power by 3 times than the CMOS)

so their is no noise that is NOISE all by itself (it is part of the scene) and most of the advanced PC noise removers use that algorythm to restore a pic to it's original state (unlike the N95 noise remover)

so I prefer the K850 in this case.(altough the N95 pics are more eye-apealing right from the cam)

it is you who decide !!!

[sarcasm]
Who needs a CCD sensor when a CMOS sensor can produce better results? The following four K850i photos are available in the Photos gallery and if these are not fake then I need to have one of these phones RIGHT NOW!!!

EXIF says they are from K850

If so... how are they so clean ? What post processing was used ?

Most of my pics look bad when shown at full size with very soft / painterly edges.

check the firmware version on the EXIFs.

these pics are the first one to be out by the k850 (june)

maybe this is the real cam driver that SE is working out to give on the first update. (maybe this driver was taken out at the first release to have some tweaks on it).

How many aperture sizes does the K850i camera allow? All recent K850i shots have the same size: f/2.8 but the above four shots show four different aperture sizes... And the total absence of noise. Maybe a CCD-based prototype that was scrapped when SE realized that the phone would need a bigger battery...?

and what is the firmware version of your phone!!
read from the EXIFS of a taken photo!

EDIT: most of the latest photos by K850 have this:

[b]R1CA037 prg12004400_Generic_SO 02.09[\b]

so the above pics are from a different firmware as i said.
just hope that this is the next firmware update.

Software: R1CA037 prg12004400_GENERIC_SO 02.09

So R9 would be newer than R1 surely ?

it is not newer in fact.
it is a far more advanced camera firmware that was intended to be on the K850 off from the release...!!!

maybe they have taken out this firmware for doing some improvements on it! (hope so)
then look forward to the SE software update which is maybe a week from now!

EDIT:
if you look at the EXIFs again you will notice that it saved less info about the pic than the firmware that is running on K850.
proving more that this was a beta camera driver (a superior one)

and i think that we are going off-topic now!!! as this is a N95 VS K850 one

Well it will be better on the K850 firmware thread for sure... but if this really is the level of quality potential... it will finish this thread off for good - lol

@mib1800....what your purpose here on Esatos Sonyericsson forum ?????

have you notice that nearly all people here enjoy Sonyericsson !!!! (i know this should be a compare thread between N95 and k850....but i think its just bollocks right now...this thread lost its "glow" long time ago....its just boring reading now..................

it is true that EXIF can be changed using software but what make me believe that is k850 shot is the noise in the pic and the quality is the same

but do you think that the focal lenght can be change ??
I dont think so

then the third pic that AbuBasim post is the true quality of the K850

I recently got a K850i on contract and thought picture quality was poor compared to other 5 megas on the market. And its so buggy i took it back as far as bugs go its the worst SE i ever had did SE not learn to rush out phones and did they not learn from P990i. Also it has horrible keypad phone attracts finger prints dont like touch keys and plasticky build its awful phone very bad. What Mobile gave it 3 stars and said picture quality could be sharper. Im waiting for Samsung G800 with optical zoom and xenon flash. Samsung produce great picture quality but i also think the K810i was better than K850i. Like the iphone TOTALLY OVER RATED.
