I have had a P990i since august 7 and a TyTN for 10 days now.
Today I sold my P990i. I couldn't take it anymore.

I've had a P900 & a P910 before, and a now last a Qtek S200.

The TyTn isn't as good as the P990 as a phone, and the touch screen is much better (more precice & responsive) on P990 but for everrything else SE have made even me a faithfull SE buyer and supporter since early 90's extremely annoyed and disapointed with their product.
I can as a huge Swedish SE fan user accept many of the bugs and small problems, and I can accept that it's not the perfect phone. But this product is to little and to late, with to may problems and most of all to incompetent, which no updates can fix.
The one thing that was the biggest dispointment for me was acctually the EXTERNAL (not even included as a function, but as a program) program for Exchange sync and push mail. It fails minimum every second time, can not be trusted at all that your changes in calender are synced, written mail is sent, and so on. I had to dubblecheck this everytime. And you have no possibilities to have set times and days for which it is supposed to send and recive things. And the amount of data it sends & recives?? And the time it takes, 2 min/sync?
No, I hope SE introduces the next generation P-series soon otherwise, they have no future in this category of phones.

while I can feel from your post that you have made an educated decision, I'm always puzzled by the comments about the P990 being a better "phone" so I'd appreciate a bit of clarification in this area

The TyTN, like the k-jam before it and the jam before that all make excellent phone devices and the TyTN more so than its predecessors as its not tinny like those earlier devices

I can make phone calls, and call handling is excellent including setup of diversions etc, and call lists etc etc so what makes P990 a better "phone" please?

@masseur you need to change you alias to WMa5seur hahah I see you get into one when anyone says something about WM5 devices, but yeah I see were you coming from alot of people feel its "cool to be a loyalist to SE" and people like you,me and many others have gone past that tesco loyalty scheme.

Its more function first over design in my eyes, then all the rest follows. I love my tytn and the 1.2Mbps download speeds still amaze me, size factor pretty good all in a very good device, basically reminds me of the days when the P800 came out and SE was still fresh on the market and were right in all ways.

I do agree with you that its a shame they havent given anyone on this forum a beta model to test, considering they lurk around here taking back input. Also some of the members I know here have access to beta releases but prefer to sell them on... how about giving back to the community that is part of your daily bread.

Just a thought before I go to sleep. The TyTN and P990 have their merits, they do similar things but in different ways and therefore its very difficult to differentiate them purely on an objective basis. Like many of us said you need to try both and see which you prefer. HTC will sort out the screen and keyboard issues as SE will deal with most of the P990's software issues. Looking for the killer factor to separate these two is going to be difficult.

Its interesting to reflect that SE and Ericsson before SE educated most of us in Smartphone technology and therefore they were probably responsible for developing our thurst for technology and constantly high expectations for the next Smartphone, irrespective of the manufacturer.

hmmm... one thing I don;t expect to change much on the P990, or M600, is the severe unavailablity of memory for running apps causing apps we're trying to multi task (such as web or email) to be closed unexpectedly.

that for me, is a serious showstopper compared to WM5 on TyTN. I checked once again the initial state of my latest TyTN and it had 55mb free before I started installing stuff

@masseur

I see where your going with this as i have been routing about with both my TyTN and my trusty old P900, from what ive been doing the TyTN surpasses the P900 on all fronts. As said before the TyTNs (apparent) function is a PDA-Phone....NOT a Phone-PDA. But the job it does as a phone is great, ringtones nice and clear.....plenty of detail for contacts....txt messaging is great....call clarity is superb, particularly noise cancellation i hear no static during calls and also when there is 'silence' on both ends.

The 'Windows' aspect of the TyTN i am still playing with as its my first windows based device. I am planning on giving some programming a go with it and possibly start some projects of my own!?

I honestly dont see how the P990i (Good as it is) could be a better phone as there isnt alot else left (feature-wise) in phone functions?!

I think that last statement pretty much sums it up and I have to say I am not a blind microsoft follower and I do feel that the "windows" part of the name in WM5 is just for marketing purposes since clearly it has nothing much to do with windows on PC except for a vague similarity in look and fairly good synch compatibility, but I see it for what it is, a marketing ploy.

however it is that same marleting and therefore market acceptability that gives windows mobile device their appeal since developers are more readily developing for this platform than they are for symbian/uiq, although some will develop for both in the same way that PS2/3 developers might develop also for nintendo, but really its just an after thought to grab a little more maketability for their software

The P990 is still an intruiging device but I have not been able to install any of the apps of my choice that I can continue to install on the TyTN which therefore give me far more additional functionality from the TyTN than I can get from the P990. My P990 continues to remain a fairly "bare" device in terms of 3rd party applications unfortunately. This is not a Sony Ericsson issue of course but more perhaps of the fact that it is treated as phone with a unique IMEI than as a general device owned by a person with a name, and maybe its that which sums this difference up for me...

@ all

So letīs get this strait, both devices are really good (not counting defects because i also have defects and still some people like me) they are different from one another but as far as i read from various reviews they are pretty good in doing what they suppose to do, the only thing that we can argue about is WHY there is so limited software available so that the users can take full advantage of the phone capabilities, i know that they will appear but i'm affraid as we see that day come another Pxxx will arrive making this one "obsolete", i feel this one when i bought the P900 and then a few months later the P910 arrived.
I might be wrong and sure i am but thereīs been a bad policy concerning this, come on one year isnīt that enough to create apps?

I did not suggest that SE would deal with all the problems. Also on my SPV M3100 I only have about 32mb of RAM on boot.

The only thing that may make the p990i a better 'phone' in my eyes is its flip where you dont need to reach for the stylus or press a button twice to activate the numberpad. I looked at the Tytn i had and thats the one thing i missed the most being able to just dial a number in with ease ! [addsig]

some people seem to have a problem with the virtual keypad but thats something I've never had a problem with on this or pervious models like the k-jam and jam

there are some freeware apps that give you even bigger virtual buttons btw

What I ment when I in my previous post said that P990 is a better phone, I ment that
first of all the flip makes it so much easier to dial a number, second: The TyTn is much better then my previos experiences with WM devices but when it comes to sound quality it's not even in the same leage as P990.
Third: headsets, I have soon tried every bluetooth headset on the market without finding one that really work, they all work OK, but not really good. Either the sound is to low for the one you speak to, or the voice dial doesn't work, or the soud quality is just crap. And the stereoheadset, that follows with the device is a joke. On P990 every headset I tried worked perfect from start.

You guys are making it impossible for me to choose!

I've worked with Windows Mobile-based smartphone's before (Qtek S100, S200, 9100, Ipaq h6340) but always missed the regular phone keyboard on these devices. Dialing numbers and typing SMS's on a *real* 0-9 keyboard has become second nature soo much that I feel it's akward not to have one.

I do need WiFi, touchscreen and the ability to run TomTom Navigator.

On paper, the P990 is the ideal device. 3G (would've prefered if it supported EDGE as well), WiFi, touchscreen, full QWERTY-keyboard AND a real phone keyboard.

However, it turns out the device is seriously flawed. I don't intend to run many third party applications outside of TomTom Navigator, but TomTom, QuickOffice and PDF+ have to run smooth. Which appears not to be the case.

The Tytn seems to be a fantastic piece of hardware, but lacks that real phone feel and I foremost need a phone/PDA, not a PDA/phone.

Tytn or P990 ... either way I'm settling for less than I want.
It's a problem that can't be solved optimally.

On a different note, my experience is that HTC devices tend to get worn out quite quickly compared to ie. Ipaq's or SE's. I know they're all still young, but how are your Tytn's holding up?

It's all a matter of compromise... you have to way up the pros and cons and as you are well aware you rarely get exactly what you want! I too wanted TomTom on my phone (along with other apps) so for me I was left little choice but to go with the TyTN. TomTom Navigator 6 is just out now but no sign of the UIQ3 version!

I removed the flip from my P910i so don't feel the need for a proper keypad. The issue of whether the P990 is a better phone is more of whether you prefer a flip or not, and as the P990 can be flip less then the comparison should be between a flip less P990 and the TyTN. The good thing for flip lovers is that you have the option in the P990.
