Well Vlammetje said all I would have thought too. To both Religion and politics. In the end it's the people who have a disagreeing viewpoint that *will* derail any point on the given subject, have the thread closed, moved, deleted or any other manner of things that just becomes irritating.
The problem is that those 2 subjects will always have a "Yours" and "Mine" opinion. (well ok and Scots britanica like volumous replies )
A seperate area could be a solution then those that don't want to see them don't have to, maybe even take it and garbage out of the "xx new posts" option so people don't have to see the topics at all? (If doable)
Unless all the threads and people within them stay civil then there'll be alot of locked threads.
Though I'd like to see some of those 2 topics discussed here, realistically unless they're completely moderated or put outside of the norm to all but personal attacks like the garbage threads, I can't see them lasting or meshing well.

@Gigs
I think that really sums things up rather well.
I am a member of a politcal forum and ironically there isn't actually much in the way of flmaing or petty squabbling there despite some of the topics being discused being rather emotive in nature. Admittedly there aren't many members, but debate really is very well mannered for the most part.
It would appear that this sort of reasoned and civil conduct is foreign to Esato where these issues are concerned. People argue that we should be allowed to discuss what we like, but I would only support that so far as it doesn't negatively impact upon people.
The idea of a seperate forum is still the best one around so far in my opinion. Keep the arguments and narrow mindedness contained at least.

What about a killfile? Basically, you could block posts either by poster or keyword. Never get irritated by Poster A again; merely block all their posts!

Some forums have a block feature, which is basically what you are suggesting. This might be a good idea for Esato too, as well as a dedicated political forum.

Vlammetje, you are quite right. Political fanatics need to behave when confronted, its the people not politics. I quite agree with you! There are many of us in here that need to sort ourselves out. I accept i have behaved wrongly when confronted and we need to change. But also, a dedicated space would be good.
However, I am SICK and tired of people saying, 'this is a community' and 'we should be able to discuss anything here' and 'we need to keep in check with the real world' and 'if you dont like politics dont get involved, keep to the mobile phone threads'. The problem i have, is that i use the new posts function, just to keep up to date with everything. So, if i accidentally visit a political thread, i may see something i heavily disagree with or that im offended by: i want to respond and reply. Again, if i am browsing the mobile free zone, and i see something pathetic like 'We hate Bush' blah blah that I disagree with I want to respond. Or, because I am a Christian, i see a religious thread, i want to reply, but then it may turn into a heated debate between members and it gets out of control.
This is a mobile phone forum, although light hearted mobile free zone topics are fine: but i see politics all day, i read newspapers and i get sick of it. I want to escape, and to enjoy myself, not have debates and fall out with other members.
Also, having a political forum is fine, but it means that you have to draw the line on who gets passwords and who doesnt. How do you go about doing that?
Mike

It's allways for some period, after that they are burried deep into the esato archive, so why not afterall ? It's not like it's everyday, just on some occasions mods have a little more work.
A special political/religious forum could be created but then I suggest a "comments approval" function for mods like on blog's where comments can be posted in threads but doesn't show up until a mod approve the message, it might avoid a flamewar. Just an idea.

Personally i feel that such a Forum could be created, with the understandin that the mod has final say. Remember, we're here voluntarily, and the site owner has the right to allow mods to remove and delete as they see fit.

This isn't really the place for that sort of enquiry. You would be better posting your query in the General Forum where it will probably get more replies.

Actually Vanquish, this IS a community, any grouping of people like this is. To say it isn't, I think, is missing the point to be honest and why I think people have such indifferent attitudes.
I use the New posts function all day long as well but unless i'm blind it shows me the topics and in which catagory they're in. If I don't want to read something, I don't. (Of course some topics can be deceptive...)
For the people that only want mobile information, well, those forums are quite clearly marked. For the people that want mobile information and also places to chat about other things, they're also clearly marked. I can't see how you wouldn't be able to tailor your browsing to suit your own needs. No one has to reply to every message.
Having a political forum wouldn't need to be password based, as far as I have seen there's no such forms of elitism on Esato, why start now. (Apart from the moderator area of course, but thats entirely understandable) You'd just need to treat it like the garbage zone, either click on the threads or not, it's your choice. (Just like it is now) Why complicate things?
Esato is *primarily* a mobile phone forum, however its also grown to become a community of people as well. Things change in time. |

Well said, Gigs! I think your reasoning is amongst the most lucid i've encountered re: the entire political/religion debate. And yes, one certainly has the freedom to choose... To click or not to click, therein lies the rub...
