The BBC are reporting that 117,000 people are now confirmed to have died. This surely must be the worst disaster of modern times, perhaps even ever. What makes it even worse is that some of the countries affected really don't have the capacity to deal with a disaster of this magnitude.

Aid efforts seem to have gotten well underway, I saw several people collecting money at a local shopping centre this evening. There are appeals on television and radio and last night the BBC said that £5 million had been raised in the UK so far.

The BBC lists the following donors:

World Bank $250m
UK $96m
EU $44m
US: $35m
Canada: $33m
Japan: $30m
Australia: $27m
France: $20.4m
Denmark: $15.6m
Saudi Arabia: $10m

I thought the British public as at the end of 30/12 had donated £25million, and the government have increased their contribution from £15m to £50m.

It seems also that the amount of aid and money being recieved isn't necessarily the problem, it's getting the aid to those who need it - most infrastructure in the worst-hit places has been totally destroyed so the only way to deliver aid is by helicopter - and there aren't enough of those to effectively deliver all the aid to the needy.

As u all know srilanka is one of the worst hit countries. Well, im in sri lanka. Over 30000 r officialy dead now. 400000 only got their clothing. I live in central province so no problem here. Our neighbour family went to see their mom and dad living in gall, they never came back . Bodies of husband and wife found but their two children vanished. some other people in the town went a trip to colombo. 19 people went, only one alive, 9 bodies found, other 9 and vehicle gone. Newspapers r full of the sad news :(

no, colombo wasnt hit, thanks goad! If it was there would be far serious damage. Heres another story. Two of our buses were washed in to a river with atleast 150 people, and now there buried in the river bed. Now people are diging the river to find them. Sorry to tell these but this is the real situation :(

Read reports and saw some pictures of the aftermath of these tidal waves. I almost broke down. No amount of words can console those who have lost lives & valuable property. It was a horrible way to end the year.

There was an item on the early evening news about a journalist visiting an area affected by the tsunamai. The people there thought they had been forgotten about, they were so happy to see the journalist and the helicopter. A simple, yet very moving story.

I read of areas completely cut-off from the rest of the world and only accessible by air or water. Then there were the islands that got completely submerged. Saw a pix of a heart-broken mother holding the lifeless hand of her dead son. Shocking, sad reports from all directions.
