Thoe are precisely the issues members should not have a say in.

I think that is a blow below the belt in this case. I am the first to agree that esato is partial to a fair bit of 'mobbing' and 'mass hysteria' however I don't see any of that in this thread.
And contrary to you, I do think voicing an suggestion to change the 'line of command' (if you will) of the board at the very least suggests a challenge to the current system.
It's either one or the other: EITHER we have mods and admin who decide what's best for us, OR we all speak our minds on every issue and never reach an agreement. I wonder if we'd learn to compromise along the way?

And supporting something because 'it will never be a reality but I just desperately need to hear the sound of my own voice' doesn't stick as a massively impressive argument, don't you agree?

@Vlamm

Now see what you've caused, I can feel waffle coming on!

I don't think it's below the belt at all, in fact I think it is quite an accurate surmation of the reaction seen to new suggestions. When the 'mob' you refer to see, which way the wind is blowing, they invariably follow that. I am quite sure that if there had been a few more names in support of this idea in the first couple of pages then the 'mob' would be singing from a different hymn sheet. The problem here is that those opposing this idea have taken it completely out of context, suggesting that:

1.) It is a challenge to the moderators

2.) That is is suggestive of laffen and/or the moderators not doing a good enough job

3.) People would 'grind axes'

These points are misleading. This was never intended as a challenge to the moderators, since it was proposed that it would be the moderators who initiated such polls when they perhaps felt it desireable to consult the members of an issue. I don't quite see how the moderators seeking the opinion of the members is a challenge to their authority. For the reason I have just given I don't see it as being suggestive of either laffen or the moderators doing a bad job.

As for the last point, there are more than enough members here on Esato to make 'vote rigging' sufficiently difficult to attempt. Say, for example, the moderators created a poll to ask the members their opinion on a particular thread that wa scausing a spot of bother, but which the members were very much divided over in terms of whether it should be locked or not. The very nature of the issue, the fact that there was so much contention over the fate of the thread in question would mean that there would be sufficient members holding opposing opinions to make small groups of 'vote riggers' inneffective at best. Could someone organise large groups of 'vote riggers', in the region of hundreds of members? Possibbly, but if the poll was given a time limit then this would effectively rule out such measures.

The comment I made about this proposal not being acted upon, but wanting to make my opinion known, was not intended as any form of 'argument', merely as a statement of fact.

I think you completely fail to see one very importnat point: only a handful of people are actively engaged in topics that might qualify as 'questionable'. This handful might well form a group of buddy supporting voters without too much problem.

I think you realise that of all members a small fraction i active, of which an ever smaller fraction is bothered by the 'politics' of the site? Turn out of any sort of poll would probably be a lot worse than turn out for european elections
