thats good and I am sorry for getting it wrong first time but I found it hard to believe myself that at least WMA couldn't be sued so a little searching found the answer I needed.
I'm pretty happy now and will not be sending this phone back. The trouble is with the V3 as my primary phone and the SP3i as my secondary, I haven't touched any phone this week!
with the V3 and SP3i both having 3 in their name, maybe thats my lucky number!

SP3i sounds better than V3 :D (also i dont like clamshell phones). So masseur, you can really receive files via bluetooth from the pc/ipaq/other phone with Smart Explorer program?

the SP3i certainly does have more total capability than the V3, or indeed any sony ericsson except the P series
the smart explorer allows sending of files via bluetooth only, you cannot receive files by bluetooth because the sending device still cannot detect an FTP client on the phone
that suits me though as I just want a quick and easy way to get pictures and stuff off the phone and onto my pc without getting the cable out.
of course, it would be nicer if it worked both ways but that will come I guess with a firmware update, maybe

Hope the next firmware will add wmp10, support for mp3 ringtones and fix the bluetooth issues (and maybe others stuff?).. We should mail microsoft/imate for releasing a new firmware.. Btw you can upgrade your sw with the included cable or you need something special for this operation?

from what I have read and been told by their support yesterday, its done through the supplied cable which is a standard USB to mini-USB cable

wahoo. I decided I must be able to use bluetooth to activesync and it worked at first go. whats more the connection remains so that I can bluetooth stuff to and from the phone from the pc side as I would if it was connected by cable. quite pleased with that
I also noticed the camera has frames and they are in a folder which I can access so I can also add my own. Shame I can't get the ones from the K700 off because some of those are pretty good!

I emailed I-mate to let them know they were wrong about WMAs as ringtones. I'll let you all know what they say (if anything).

don't hold your breath, I was doing the online support session with them last night about my bluetooth issues and they asked me what OBEX was!

I guess that explains why they didn't mention WMA files - Microsoft themselves omit that from their website information on this operating system.
At least if anyone else asks this question they'll have an answer.

This is a question for masseur:
Does the SP3i support voice dialing over bluetooth?

although its not something I have tried yet (since I use my headset with my V3) as far as I know windows mobile 2003 SE doesn't support voice dialling over bluetooth but microsoft have confirmed it will be a feature of the 2004 windows mobile for phones
some manufacturers have implemented their own solutions, for example Motorola have added it to the MPX 220. The SP3i has something called voice tags which I have not investigated yet but will do so now that you have asked.
@DSF, windows mobile for phone devices with small screens like this don't get pocket excel or pocket word. The speakerphone is of good enough quality and loud enough volume to work well enough and only requires a one button push to activate. I had one hang so far which required a battery removal but otherwise no crashes at all
