i think the car was invented by a german guy...

as the world's sole superpower at the moment, america has the opportunity to engage the whole world into a unified voice against all things evil.but, our future isn't really dependent on nuclear weapons, or terrorism or whose economy will crash into recession!
all these are temporary problems, and when the collective minds of the world get together, a solution to every problem can be hammered out.

what i'm really miffed out about america is (this is the only one i really care about), the fact that it is very callous about the enviornment/pollution. why can't america sign the kyoto treaty when the rest of the world has ratified it...
why is it that america which has such a small population produce such a disproportionate chunk of the world's pollution/garbage... and why can't they leave the alaskan wilderness for the animals? why do they have to dig for oil there too?

there's no point in fighting about who invented what or who can't live without what invention... the thing we really have to argue about is whether these inventions cause damage to our own futures!! what's the point in having a huge car/lighbulbs/pc's when we run out of energy sources?

its' exactly this apathy towards others and our future that pisses me off!

America has such great potential to lead the world in the fight against terrorism, against pollution, towards world peace, and sooo much more but we haven't done anything about it! We've withdrawn fomr the Nuclear Non-prolifieration treaty, refused to acknowledge the Kyoto protocol, declared the UN defunct, and isolated America from the rest of the world!

Something else that might illustrate why quite a lot of people don't like Americans is this:

Whenever I buy/download freeware off the internet and start installing it, the programme will often ask what installation language you want to use. And quite often, then English option will say 'United States (English)' or 'English (United States)' This to many (including me I'm afraid to say!) says arrogance, especially as we invented the language!

And that in these programmes (Sorry, programs ) use thoughout American English, e.g. spellings like color, labor, americanisms like trash can, sidewalk, muffler, etc. Even when I see British characters in US series (Like Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) they are using americanisms, makes me cringe!!

I'd like to end on a slightly more positive note, there are a lot of good things that have come out of the US. Like The Simpsons and Buffy (both show that some Americans are starting to develop a sense of irony! ) Star Wars (although it was made in the UK), lots of very pretty movie (Oops, sorry, film!) stars, and a ton of great films.

I bet the majority of Americans are decent people, who also despise what they're country has become, and how it is portrayed by others. And I hope they all vote Bush out!

I think Henry Ford, only invented a production process named "mass production". Not the "modern car" as you call it.

And about existing many different cars, well, for me a car is something with 4 wheels and an engine.

I don't have America. But this topic clearly shows why people do. In a nutshell you said we can't live without you or your inventions. Then you claim all sorts of intentions to be american. Most weren't. How old is america? How many things were invented before america was discovered? In fact, we invented america. Who couldn't be here without who now?

My 2 cents:

I love America, I just hate the idiots that run it. Not all people in America are that bad but I can understand why the rest of the world hates us.

For Sage who was talking about all the world using PCs.
Well, you're posting over the internet, and that was an European invention

I have no problem with Europe, I'm not "Anti-European" and even live here. People who are, on the other hand, "Anti-American" should also be against our movie, television, music, fast food/junk food, video game (alot of the games you play are made by American publishers) etc.

I don't give a f**k if you have your reasons, but calling all Americans idiots is just plain low. I dont care if you got your hate from your own personal judgement, I do care if you are just repeating something you've heard from someone else.

And wtf are you saying? Every nice country is proud of itself, its called patriotism m8, and the world is full of it. Look at this guy, ******, he seems pretty full of himself. The world is full of proud-jerk off's, not just us Americans.

I hate our government as well, I hate all governments, and I don't condone our past actions for the last 300 something years weve been a nation, but I dont condone any governments actions.

BTW the world economy WOULD collapse if ours collapse. Get your facts straight and stop acting as if you don't need us. We need you, you need us, get over it.

Oh and btw, Im sorry for using the word "we", although "we" as americans are a nation, and theres nothing wrong with saying that.

I'm expecting you to quote me on that...
I never said Americans are stupid.
And not giving a f*** is typical...

I see that the debate has moved forward in a reasoned and well constructed manner.

I love the cut and thrust of an intellectual debate, with all it's reasoned responses

I feel a thread lock coming on

btw, totally off topic for a sec - does anyone else find when they click on this particular topic they find themselves on page 2 or 3? I've got my preferences set to 'latest post first', and it keeps putting me in the middle of the thread!
