Im glad things are getting back to normal. I was worried, 1st threats on Microsoft, a mega virus and power cut. I got paranoid thinking what if when everything reboots and gets a virus. Bit like Terminator 3. I watch too many films HaHa

wasn't it a cascade effect? its quite simple on systems which cant handle overload - i was reading in the paper that our country (UK) has hardly any reserve because of bad management/closures etc.. .and we are in for a winter of power cuts, this doesnt worry me unduely because i live near a few large power stations and power cuts arent uncommon, although they only last for a few hours max.
anyway - gone off the point. a cascade effect is where something happens to 1 plant so it has to be shut down, this causes a surge of demand on all the other plants, and if there is no reserve then the nxt plant will shut down automatic becuz of the overload and so on...
thats why the whole eastern board went down. |

power plants are supposed to have capacity for spinning reserve and peaking power. therefore, should there be need for more demand (i.e. due to fluctuations in the system), reserve capacity should be readily available. i guess in this case, the overload proved too much to handle.

@ Boyi: The Cayahoga River was once so polluted that it actually caught fire! This was one of the events that led to the creation of the Clean Waters Act, a law the Bush administration has begun to dismantle, along with many other laws meant to protect the environment. Bush has made the US a land 4 the rich only. Poison the poor & the rest of the world!

stupid power cut (london, south east) took me 5 hours to get home yesterday (instead of 1)!
Why do we the british have to copy america all the time (bush wants to go to war... so we want to go to war etc...) |

We take electricity for granted now don't we, well a while ago i saw a scientist warning us that we may loose electricity as we know it, YES that sounds like TOTAL CRAP, but he explained that the earths magnetic field has swopped around with regular intervals every 100,00 years, according to history the poles swop over as part of a natural occurance with all magnetic fields & guess what ...we are expecting it again, it would COMPLETELY SCREW all our systems & create world turmoil.
Have a nice day !

Hey, at least if the poles swop round you won't survive long enought to realise your phone's no use. It would screw all the computer systems sure, and, basically, yes, it will cause turmoil, but of the terminal sort. |

oh well that's something to look forward to then...
i will next set off the goldeneye over edinburgh by the way - am hoping to erase all my bank debts from the computers there. HahAhha. Robbie Coltrane will be the inside man to finish off the job. Hahahaha.

PS what really got me last night was that i had no cash and couldn't use my credit card. i couldn't have survived as long as the NYers. I didn't notice the power go off cos the laptop battery was working - only when i went out for cigarettes all the shops were dark! |
