So how does adding extra letters to words count as 'speed typing'?, surely the point is to shorten them length of the word. Your error was by far the strangest, which is why none of the other errors were included.

Spike

Thanks again for your wise words.

1. Do you mean shorten as in your use of the word 'them'?

2. This is a forum for P800 users

To all on this forum,

I now have my Orange P800 back from the CPW shop in Glentworth Street London. I did a restore and this has worked without a hitch.

However, now that I have had the chance to spend a couple of days with it, I can conclude that the benefits of the upgrade simply dont justify the hassle factor. The phone can display full screen images, in the same way the free app Full Screen Pictures does, but the ability to display a whole folder with one click of the wheel is better than the 'select file, select picture, select full screen' method employed by the SE pictures app. I therefore find myself sticking to the old free app. As for the camera; frankly it is still a joke. The so called Night Mode makes no noticable difference whatsoever. I have done a couple of tests in identical situations and can not tell them appart. My friend's Panasonic clamphone takes incredible clear pics in darkness. Side by side, the Panasonic gives a clear contrasty pictures while my P800 shoots a black square (even on Night Mode). Finally, SMS confirmation has always seemed superfluous to me anyway, as texts are generally very reliable.

To date, I have been unable to find any other benefit of the update. Even BT - which claims to have been improved - behaves the same way. All in all I have no idea why I went to so much trouble! As a Mac user, I had hoped that SE might improve the compatibility in some way. Sadly, this is not the case.

If this update is causing people problems, I would certainly consider forgetting it altogether.

Hi guys. I work for CPW, and I have a P800; and its on Orange, and guess what? I had it upgraded by CPW, and everything works fine.

You guys should not diss CPW just because of a few clueless consultants, not all of us are stupid.

Anyway......back to the topic, it was the Glenthworth Street branch which I went to, and it took 5 hours to do. This is probably just because there were other phones as well, I don't reckon that the entire process takes 4 hours.

And all people who are spreading conspiracy theories about CPW voiding the warranty of the phone : Dont be stupid, and stop spreading this rubbish around. Obviously such a massive and established company with recognised service centres everywhere are not going to void the warranty of P800s or any phone.

So anybody who is concerned about CPW being dodgy, rest assured, my Orange P800 is so-called "living proof" thats its fine to upgrade with us.

Hope this helps(to stop spreading rumours, that is)

Cheers

Yeah, I know..........but believe me, we can do P800 Orange upgrades.

All the Orange mp4 startup videos will be gone, as well as GPRS, WAP and MMS settings, otherwise, all the Orange numbers and stuff are still there, so it is completely safe to do.

I have also consulted Orange technical support, and they said that its no problem getting the upgrade from ourselves, as its not going to intrude their software.

Just to further on the Orange P800 at CPW.

When an Orange P800 is upgraded on EMMA II using the selection P800 [UK], ALL Orange customisation is gone for good and will be a Generic product only with the Orange SIM lock still intact.

However, if a back up is done beforehand preferably using the latest V1.4.2 P800 PC Suite, then ALL customisation (as well as user installed settings & phone memory application software) will be re-instated after the upgrade using the Restore option.
If this is not done then I'm sure this will upset Orange.

We are at the moment training CPW engineers to be aware of the PC Suite to provide a customer serivice of backing up the software ourselves, not just for Orange but all P800's, should the customer request it. But CPW will still warn customers, especially on Orange, they will lose all installed settings, phone memory application software & customisation if a back up is not done.

And it does take 55 minutes to do just a firmware upgrade on a P800 with existing hardware, although the USB option which is faster has been pretty unreliable and is still under evaluation.

And yes Glentworth Street has been swamped with P800's so that's why the turnaround time is high.

Hi ,

Another CPW employee here. Not an engineer, I must admit. I've been following this Orange P800 upgrade issue as I want to do the upgrade, but the horror stories, particularly on this forum have made me hold out - also I can't restore my backups (minor problem!)

I think the confusion regarding CPW and upgrades has arisen because there's no uniformity. Glentworth Street are, I think, the first CPW Express Repair Centre to offer the upgrade. I know, for example, that Greenford are waiting for the USB cable before offering it at all, due to the turnaround, and maybe the willingness of the fickle to slate CPW or anyone else given half a chance. And by the way, they won't void the warranty or they wouldn't be an accredited SE service centre. The warranty is with SE, not Orange or anyone else!

My advice......

Patience is a virtue (and a card game). Be virtuous - it'll be in your best interests in the end.

Hi

The CPW in Reading is saying that they won't be providing the firmware upgrade for the P800 until the end of the year !!!! Can anyone let me know somewhere in Berkshire/London I can go to to get the update ?

Thanks
