well its part of their business and marketing strategy. lets face it, cellphones nowadays is a necessity na. and nasa pic na ang mga mobiles ngayon kaya sinasamantala nila. good thing that the SUN is coming kaya dadami na naman ang gimiks nila for the benefit of us (mga customers). we customers have a choice naman eh, kaya nga there is a competition (between smart, globe and sun). mag histerical na lang tayo lahat when this 3 companies tied up and will charged us big bucks for just a simple SMS. |

BTW, one of the competitors, EXTELCOM, is planning to upgrade their analog network to CDMA (digital standard prevalent in the US) on the second half of this year. If you can't remember, EXTELCOM was the first cellular company in the Philippines. Anyway, that means they are going to be active again with a new digital network and openly compete the GSM standard by using CDMA. Take note: Piltel's Mobiline CDMA network was shut down last Dec. 31, 2002. That means solo na ng Extelcom ang CDMA market. Extelcom under Bayantel.Almost all the telcos with their own cellular companies.Will just wait and see.If im extelcom,il start with 3G already para first uli sila.What i mean is full 3G talaga or whatever d term is(umts).

@adv- Extelcom is still operating as Excel Telecom. CDMA is dead. CDMA2000 won't take off either. 3G is about to die as well even before its birth, just like Iridium. 3G is too much, too soon, at too high a price. 4G will come sooner & cheaper than 3G. There are only 3 [b]main[/b] GSM players: Globe(Touch Mobile), Smart(TnT/Piltel), & Sun. I think Sun will be better than Smart-better management (not as corrupt)

I agree that reviving cdma at this stage of gsm dominance sounds like a bad idea that's doomed to failure. @kap was just trying to cool you down, as you seemed really pissed off by someone or something in the previous posts. If you weren't then forget it, my fault.

well, what Express Telecom (BayanTel's affiliate) did was to actually "jump over" to 3G. As we can take note, Piltel moved from 1G (AMPS) to 2G (CDMA & GSM). Smart was same, 1G (ETACS) to 2G (GSM). Globe/Islacom started off immediately with 2G (GSM). Finally, Extelcom here started with 1G (AMPS) then in a "VERY DARING MOVE" jumped immediately to the 3G standard of AMPS which is CDMA2000 (versus "3GSM"-the 3G standard of GSM). If you will still look closely, Smart and Globe are still at 2.5G (GPRS).
Well, all I could say is that maybe, Extelcom is trying to tell its competitors "Ako ang nag-umpisa ng laban, ako rin ang tatapos nito..." =)
Anyway, if this is a good or bad move for Extelcom, we will all see in the following months... and we all thought it all ended with Sun... meron pa palang hihirit (the return of the comeback, baga). hehe

@adv seems you really did your research on these matters. Extelcom still has a lot of convincing to do, but we will just have to wait and see. These are indeed interesting times as advances in telecoms are moving at a faster pace.

Yah a new CDMA player is really daring because there are no handsets for people to use, everyone is using GSM/GPRS handsets, hehehe - It's not only daring, it's crazy!
Btw, am really surprised to find out that Smart still maintains its analog network, and ditto that Extelcom still lives and breathes. Might as well as well dig up my old analog Nokia that I used with Smart (until all that cloning and dubious billing forced me to switch to Globe GSM in 1999!)

@ynohtna yeah, ito yung gusto mong sabihin "para first uli sila". FIRST IN 3G technology here in the philippines
@jazzbo Smart shut down its 1G(ETACS) network last dec 30, 2002. so no use na rin ung smart analog handset mo. but if u have mobiline handset, yun ang pwede pang gamitin sa extelcom. btw, piltel also shut down its mobiline cdma network last dec 2002.

@adv...but those are "old" models. Do any of them even have a video cam? Other than faster internet (and spending faster per KB) what's the use of 3G without video conferencing? Vid-con is one of the main selling factors of 3G... and right now... there still is no "one" 3G standard. UMTS, EDGE, CDMA2000 and WCDMA are all "standards" (That's kinda dumb don't you guys think?!??!)
None of them are interoperable.
I think Extelcom has the right mindset... just really bad ...no, make that REALLY REALLY bad planners.
Unless they plan to market their 3G network to a very small niche market of heavy mobile surfers.  |

There's only ONE 3G standard and that's UMTS.
The operators can use different implementations to conform to UMTS - and there's two major candidates - CDMA2000 and WCDMA (FOMA by NTT DoCoMo in Japan).
EDGE was made for GSM operators to rival CDMA One, both 2.5G.
rccbarredo, Extelcom did not start with AMPS, they started with NAMPS (Narrow-band AMPS, which has more capacity than AMPS)
Extelcom has the backing of CDMA2000 proponents as they'd like to break in to the Philippine market.
