Abduction - Free doodle-jump clone that I find to be better than the original
Barcode Scanner - I'm sure you can figure out what it does
Handcent SMS - SMS application similar to the iPhone in design that offers increased usability
Those three without a doubt. My fiancée laughs every time she hears the cow moo of Abduction starting... I'm addicted I tell ya!
Others on my list:
- Advanced Task Manager - automatically kill apps that are running in the background
- JuiceDefender - wonderful for prolonging battery life
- Startup Auditor - kill apps you can't uninstall and don't use (Moxier, I'm looking at you) than keep em dead
- Apps Organizer - an easy way to keep your app folders organized
- PDANet - the best tethering app around
- Seesmic - fully featured Twitter client
tried searching for pdanet and it can't be found

Strange. I'm pretty sure I found it on the market here.
Oh well. Since you need the PC-side software to make it work anyway, just go grab it from June Fabrics website: http://www.junefabrics.com/
A license is about $20 (which gets you past the 30-day trial), but it's definitely worth it. Works wonderfully, and I haven't had any of the connection drops I had using the WinMo version on my old iPAQ (though the phone itself may have been the problem there). One license works for one phone, but you can install the PC software on as many computers as you like.

Hi all
beebplayer sounds exactly like what I need. But it's not returning a result in a search on Android Market on my X10. Where would I find it?
Loving Air Control from my mate's iPod touch so that was downloaded rapidly.
Google goggles is obviously a great wow app. Show people your phone and normally they love it. Show them goggles and they are normally trying to buy it off you.

"beebplayer", "beeb" and "iPlayer" all find it in the market for me. In fact it is the only result.
There may be a regional issue here.
HERE is the developer's blog though, he might be able to give you an alternate download

Thanks matey. Am in Sweden and I accept that the BBC are obliged to block content they don't have international rights for on iPlayer but I wouldn't have thought they would have blocked its distribution wholesale in order for Android users to listen to live streaming.
This is key for me, my X1 and X2 were both superb for streaming BBC shows since they were officially endorsed BBC handsets. There must be a work around for Android that enables me to just get live R5, R1 etc again. |

All you need is the .apk and you can install it manually

Found it and installed. Radio stream won't work though, I think the BBC are doing a much better job of limiting streaming content these days as per their DRM agreements. They need to get their fingers out re supporting Android.
Thanks for your help anyway, I have some hope that if I can find a working RTSP stream then there might be ways to play it.

Another must-have for me: bTunes music player. The lock screen controls (seriously missing from MediaScape) are awesome. The program is light and fast (starts up instantly), and it recognizes the button on the mic dongle for play/pause.

OK, here is my list of my favourite apps so far, some of which I think are truly indispensable:
2G-3G OnOff – a desktop widget that brings you straight to the network settings that allows you to switch between GSM and 3G. Helps extend battery life by switching off 3G when you don’t need it.
APNdroid – a great widget that essentially toggles your mobile network data connection on and off. The thing with Android is that once you enter your APN settings, it pretty much continually connects to the network without you being able to control it. Not good for battery life and especially not good for controlling phone bills! I would manually edit the APN name to prevent it from connecting, a tedious process until I stumbled upon this gem!
Astro – a great file explorer, automated task killer, and utility for backing up app installer files, all rolled into one
Sprite Backup – customized, automated and encrypted phone backups to the SD card
BlueRSS – the best RSS reader for Android that I’ve tried so far
F1 / F1 Racing – F1 is a great app for F1 fans. It gets RSS news and the teams’ Twitter feeds, with the schedules, standings, etc. What it doesn’t have is live timing, which F1 Racing sort of has. You don’t get the official F1 timing screens, but it’s better than nothing.
Handcent – a terrific and extensively customizable SMS/MMS app, with blacklisting features as well
Newspapers – a cool app which provides what seems to be the front pages of a LOT of newspapers from many different countries
pFinance – a very good and almost complete finance app for those who want to monitor stock, currency and commodity prices. It also incorporates many tools, like tip and loan calculators, etc.
SplashID – An excellent app I’ve been using for years, and is available on Android for storing passwords and other confidential data, and syncs with your computer via your home wifi network
Except for Sprite Backup and SplashID, all are free apps that are readily available on the Android Market. Try them out and if you come across better apps, post them here!
