By magic Big M! you're a clever chap, you know these things share a certain amount of things, specifics are stored in your mac, if you hunt around the library you'll see folders and folders of makes or printers etc etc that have never been anywhere near your mac...

ah ok, the same happens in Windows... it knows about many existing products and can provide basic functionality for most, but device specific functionality needs drivers
for windows, vendors provide basic details to MS so that their device has some basic default connectivity... surely this is the same in mac?
and surely mac, like windows, can't handle new devices previously unknown, or provide device specific functionality without extra software? as a developer I just can't see how it can do "magic" without prior knowledge, i.e. programming based on info provided by vendors as each device will have its own protocols for communication etc
anyway, I have to say I'm not that impressed by the Stanford University lectures so far. Considering the lecturers are long time Apple employees working in the iPhone development arena for Apple, there's alot of umm-ing and ah-ing, the first demo didn't work, and their techniques for explaining things leave alot to be desired. However, its great that its been downloadable on iTunes so that I can play it over and over while googling similar references to put it all together
I've now completed the first course assignment, which was text based rather than GUI, so I'm looking forward to getting some serious iPhone assignments done! This is FUN!

ok, so how do you add stuff to the menu bar at the bottom?
I tried dragging a program there and it went up in a puff of smoke never to be seen again. I checked the wastebasket but it wasn't there.
I'm now having to install the sdk again since it was the xcode program from that!
what did I do wrong?
edit: oh, and I lost the downloaded folder that was there in the menu bar too... how to get that back?

When you open an app it'll appear in the dock (bottom bar) right click and "Keep in dock"
as for downloads drag and drop from your home folder to the dock a la

ah, ok. I was trying to drag the app from the folder to the dock, and also trying to find an option on the program in the folder (like move to trash) which would allow me to add it to the dock
strange that you have to actually open the app in order to get the option to add it to the dock but it works... so thanks

Not very odd at all!
if it's not an app open you open often why would you want it in the dock when you have a shortcut straight to applications?
You can drag from apps to the dock though... and it'll stay there...
to remove from dock you click and drag from dock and then let go:

hmmmm.. I'll see what I can find out about the speed issue, I connect to my net wirelessly as only ever have, so don't see what's going on! you using safari?
figured it out.
I'm using a Virgin broadband router which is made by Netgear, and its this model of router that doesn't seem to like mac.
I dug out an older netgear router that I take on travels with me, as its small and it gives me wireless in my room when the hotel only provides a wired connection
I connected that to the virgin netgear router via ethernet cable, and connected to the mac wirelessly to that old wireless router and I'm now getting the same speeds on the mac that I am seeing on the vaio
the virgin router is on the latest netgear firmware, and I can't see any "make macs go slow" settings, so I guess I'm stuck using 2 wireless routers in the house until I can figure that puzzle
edit: well that didn't take long.
The router has a "mode" setting which can be 54Mbps legacy mode, a 145Mbps neighbour friendly mode and a 300Mbps Performance mode.
The mac works perfectly fine in 54 and 300 Mbps modes but slows to a crawl in 145Mbps mode, which is what I had it set at
how weird!
