I just got a Canon EOS1000D and I am definitely off the AAs - the battery life of the Li-Ion battery packs is amazing, and the image quality streets ahead of any bridge camera, even with kit lenses...
The low end Nikons are only worth considering if you don't mind manual focus much of the time I believe the autofocus system has compatibilty issues with some lenses

It was bought in NYC and i live in the UK so unless i want to pay an obscene cost in postage then i've not got many options as it was US warranty only.

Got myself a DSLR now. Got a Sony Alpha A300. Only got the standard 18-70 lens at the moment but gonna get a 70-300 in the next week or so. Must say that the A300 is a great camera and the liveview with tiltable screen is excellent. Was quite a bit cheaper than the Canon 400D as well otherwise would have got the Canon.

SIGMA 70-300mm DG Macro, is what I use. Fitted with a Hoya Skylight 1B Multicoat, and it's an excellent lens. Bought it for £75 del. brand new! And i hear even better things about the one with APO glass. Minimum focussing distance of 90cm ain't too bad either.
And it's good for full and cropped frame alike...
