Are you using any 3rd party screensaver? Some screensaver eats thru battery like no tomorrow. I once use the screensaver that is bundled with HandyClock and I couldnt get 1 day with. I reverted back to default one and now I can get at least 2 days of use.

i only have a different theme. I close all apps when ive fiinished with them. I dont have too mant apps either, only about 4 or so installed since i got it.
again, i havnt used too much of any thing, i have not done any HEAVY usage yet, just played around with the features.

The other thing you have to watch out is that if you pull out charger after 15-20min the battery meter will ALWAYS show full eventhough the battery is not fully charged. So it is best to pull out only after the battery bar is not moving. Otherwise there may be somethign wrong with your battery.

i usually charge my phone for a good couple hours, or a quick one if im getting ready to go out somewhere and it needs a speedy charge.
so its had healthy charges so far.
battery today hasnt lost one bar, has had same usage as past couple days, just played round with it more today. Prob less calls though, couple more sms sent. i did take it off charge at bout 12.30ish'pm though (its now 8:38pm)
im going to wait a few days, if im not happy with it, may get a p1 instead.

as a brand-new N95 user I'd say that battery life is quite quite worse than what I was used to with my old K750.  Nevertheless, these cannot be compared in any way.
I charge my battery once a day - but I've never had my battery completely dead yet - I start charging it usually at two lines of the battery bar remaining... and as I am a new user of the phone you can be certain that I use it A LOT!
that's why I think half a day is quite a short time for the battery to be discharged. there's something wrong with your battery, mate! try another one before swapping to P1!
offtopic: is there a way to turn volume down in java applications? I can't find any...

Good point Mib. I have been using a third party screen saver. I will go back to the originals and check this.
If I may ask something from everyone in this thread. I was thinking about it we all chart our phone usage and battery life for say a few days, and then report back how long the battery lasts, what settings we are using, software, etc.... We could then have this as maybe a sticky here so that people could have this as a quick and handy reference. This battery issue is a #1 problem with the N95 and I am sure that just by doing a search on battery issued with the N95 would point people to Esato. If we were able to compile a list and post it, this might help out those having issues with battery life. Also, we could send this to Nokia (they do read some forums) and maybe they would be able to assist in making the battery last a bit longer.
Just a thought.

There is no way getting around the fact battery life on the Nokia N95 is less than great. Almost every N95 review addresses this issue in one way or the other. Opinions seem to range from infuriated "Nokia should provide a more powerful battery for this type of device" to apologetic "a communication and multi media power house is bound to run its battery dry in no time".
Whatever the case may be, there are things that can be done to improve upon the «default» N95 battery life time. Improvements come from tweaking a few, selected settings from their default values.
I have divided this authoritative N95 battery tweaking guide into two parts: first I will show you a few basic battery friendly optimizations and habits that can be employed by everyone. Next, I provide a few advanced tweaks that on the one hand might not fit everybody, on the other hand result in the most significant improvements.
Right, let's get cracking!
Basic Optimizations
Update phone firmware - new firmware might include improvements to battery management.
Bluetooth - keep it off unless needed. Put bluetooth management on «active standby» screen for easy access («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Standby mode» | «Active standby apps..»).
Brightness timeout …not more than 10 seconds («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Display» | «Light time-out»).
Screen brightness - turn it down a notch or two («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Display» | «Light sensor»).
Lower the standby timeout - mine's set to 1 minute («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Display» | «Power saver time-out»).
Camera - do not walk around with "live" viewfinder1.
Rocket Science Tweaks
WLAN scanning - turn it off…scan manually, or turn scanning on when needed («Tools» | «Settings» | «Connection» | «Wireless LAN» | «Scan for networks»).
3G - turn it off - especially in areas with poor coverage, where the N95 otherwise will spend stupefying amounts of power searching for networks («Tools» | «Settings» | «Phone» | «Network» | Set «Network mode» to «GSM»).
WLAN transmit power (TX power level) - turn it down to, say, 4 mW. («Tools» | «Settings» | «Connection» | «Wireless LAN» | «Options» | «Advanced settings» - say YES to the prompt - scroll down to TX power level choose options/change/ and select 4 mW.).
Enjoy … and by the way, I have no idea if employing these tweaks will actually lead to a 328% improvement, but it is a nice figure, don't you think?

I have to wonder. If you N95 owners were to play music non stop how long would the battery last? As a multi media device this is the most basic function it could perform and a function that I would use frequently - especially when travelling. Now I know My K800 is not in the same league as the N95 but as multimedia devices they do share the most commonly used functions - so it is fair to make some comparisons and expect decent battery life. Both my K800 and my old W800 could play music all day long, take calls, take photo's and so on without dropping below 50%.
I'm still amazed that some of you consider it acceptable to have to charge or carry a spare battery around. I don't think the battery cover or the batteries are really designed to take the wear involved. This takes me back 15 years or more ago when phones were much larger and batteries would only last 4-8 hours. As far as "preparation" goes - Nokia should have done this by providing a battery that is up to the demands of the N95. |

The way the N95 deals with power consumption is a thing of mystery.
Consider these 2 abnormal experiences i had:
a. Charged it all night, went out 8.15 am with full bars, didn't use it for anything except a few texts, maybe 3 calls (total talk time = less than 10 mins), and it was informing me of "Battery Low" at 10am. Genuine WTF moment.
b. Charged it all night, went out 8am with full bars, used it as bluetooth modem about 3 hours over the whole day, used wifi for a good 2 hours, made about 8-10 calls, about 20 texts, took around 15 photos, shot a 15 min video, and at 11 pm that night i still had 3 bars of battery. |
