just got mine so gonna stick some charge on it while I do some work (about time too!)

interestingly, orange said I can take any old phone into any orange shop with my receipt in the next two weeks and get £100 credit on my account

as someone with loads phones lying around its well worth it! in fact I have an old Nokia 2110 I think I will donate to the cause

anyway, I'll give this N95 a good go a bit later

btw, why would you want tomtom on the N95? just curious

d'oh! ask a silly question I suppose

but of course that not really what I meant, why would you not use the built in maps? ah, because of the subscription for navigation?

well, tomtom source their map data from tele atlas whereas smart2go source from both tele atlas and navteq.

I have a Garmin GPS which uses navteq data and most reviews and comparisons I have read that compare the two suggest navteq comes out slightly better in most cases.

so, the conclusion from that is that data-wise, smart2go has an edge over tomtom but I guess the interface needs to be taken into consideration and I have never used tomtom at length so cannot really comment on that side but I won't make the assumption that tomtom is better

anyway, got the long weekend to check it all out, including comparing the GPS with my Garmin

@mib1800

I have to agree to agree with Fatreg as the Holox BT-321 is my GPS receiver and it does indeed work indoors. It also uses a RFMD chip that has faster acquisition and fix times than both Sirf111 and the Sirf11 chip found in the N95 and is able to search for up to 32 Satellites even though as yet there are not that many launched.

@Masseur

Also like Fatreg Tom Tom is my preferred software of choice so until i actually see the N95's solution am very unlikely to want to change from it, as a creature of habit i like sticking with what works and i know and like. As also mentioned above my GPS is superior to the solution offered in the N95.

@ all,

I owe some here an apology as i did believe the N95 was Symbian 9.1 FP1 i have now been shown that is in fact Symbian 9.2 so as always when i am wrong i apologize unreservedly.

mib1800..

fyi... was running music player and web browser and the music cut out.... (memory full)

i then killed both apps... started up gps and got memory full errors.... looks like some memory leakage or insufficient ram AGAIN!...

rebooted and it was ok......i'm tracking ram usage with handytaskman... (great app)

it's a nice phone too bad for some reason they can't give these things the same amount of performance memory as the e series...

so i guess i'll be waiting for the e61i...

bug report someone got a hold of obviously not an "official" report it's just a bunch of notes being taken.. but interesting nevertheless...

N95

• GPS can take 20 minutes to upload
• When using GPS reception can be lost temporarily
• When setting up GPS it will ask customer to choose access point they need to select contract internet.
• GPS is slow compared to Tom Tom.
• When setting up GPS you have to purchase the license and you can select to do this from the phone and pay via premium sms or credit card.
• The navigation system is supported by Nokia not Vodafone.
• When browsing on the phone can display memory full and this is normally when music player is in the background but can often be when nothing else is running to correct this customer needs to do a reset on the phone.• Barcode scanner doesn’t work
• Can occasionally say can no longer connect to WAP or packet data failed and wont let them do anything else to correct this customer needs to reset phone.
• If customer wants to use nuc code if they enter a non Vodafone sim it will ask for code and screen will go white customer needs to enter code without sim.
• If new music is downloaded from Vodafone live it wont automatically show they will need to go to media player and refresh music library
• Customer will not be allowed to make calls when connected via hsdpa. There is no icon on the screen to show that the customer is connected to this, issue should be resolved completely after July.to disable HSDPA customer needs to go to connection packet data high speed packet data and disable.
• There is an issue with stability on this phone and may crash few times a week this is is normal if doing it few times a day may be faulty phone. Phone has a lot of applications in such a compact device that crashing is inevitable.
• Hard wear design fault the stereo headset jack connector makes a hissing noise in your ear when music turned up• Battery life is poor and will drain more when applications used such as GPS wi-fi streaming and radio dj. Eg when using radio dj on fully charged battery it will last 45mins.
• Camera not fully optimised the colour balance should be better.
• If customer is planning on travelling and using the maps it will be cheaper for them to go on to the internet on there home pc to smart2go.com and on maploader downloading them to the pc then put them on there memory card. If downloaded via phone can work out expensive eg whole of uk is 90mb.
• Some issues should be improved with the software update due end of month.

the ones i've bolded are interesting.....

I got mine 10 hours ago and have played for about 3 and the following are the ones I have experienced

• When using GPS reception can be lost temporarily
I've seen this, not in map mode but in plan route mode

• When setting up GPS it will ask customer to choose access point they need to select contract internet.
I'm using wifi but it did take me a couple of times to realise I had to select it in settings otherwise it asked me each time

• When setting up GPS you have to purchase the license and you can select to do this from the phone and pay via premium sms or credit card.
I've seen the dialogue but thats not really a bug?

• When browsing on the phone can display memory full and this is normally when music player is in the background but can often be when nothing else is running to correct this customer needs to do a reset on the phone
yeah, seen this memory full a few times though I have heaps of main memory and memory card memory available. Only one auto restart seen when I tried to cancel a connection to the internet

• Barcode scanner doesn’t work
I haven't got this to work yet but then I only tried it tonight and only in low light (although it did turn the flash light on and off a few times which just caused reflection)... so will reserve judgement for now
mind you, I had little success with the card scanner in P990

• Some issues should be improved with the software update due end of month.
nothing new there then... for any manufacturer.

In general though I have been fairly impressed when comparing my feeling of the P990 after the same number of hours of playing/testing
