Hi Prom1,
I really am not the ogre people seem to think i am i only lose it with people who make statements that they are either unwilling or unable to quantify. Everyone is entitled to thier own preferences and opinions but slating something with out grounds really ppp's me off.
I always install Tom Tom on my memory card as with the maps Poi's voices etc it is to much stuff to put in the phones memory IMO, but i do not use any of the update services as really have no need for traffic updates and the latest speed camera databases can be found quite easily on the web for free and are quite quick and easy to remove the old data base and replace it with a new one if needed. Also this way once i have bought my software there are no more running costs involved. Sorry just realised you are talking about running GPS on the E90 it is my understanding that you can not run 3rd party Sat Nav software from the inbuilt GPS and Nokia's solution is free but turn by turn directions will in fact be chargeable and as you will need this whilst on the move it would have to use the phones data connection so will also incur Network Data usage charges. This is why i am not a fan of built in GPS on any device as i have stated before i use a Holox GPS that is now far cheaper than when i originally bought mine, it is really small and has approx 100hrs battery life and can be charged in car if needed with a Motorola V3 charger as has a mini USB port also my preferred Sat Nav of choice is Tom Tom so Nokia's solution is of no interest to me even if was completely free.

IMO and it is just that MO i think the reason is quite simple the quality and visibility of a non touchscreen phone is just so much better. Plus the control you get with the D-pd and cursor is quicker than having to get a stylus out and stab at the screen, I used to have a P900 and then P910 and never thought I could survive without a touchscreen I have only been using S60 since June of last year and my initial concerns where I would really miss the touchscreen. Whilst using S60 I have also had a M600 that I couldn't give away fast enough as I hated it and recently bought and used a TyTN for 6 days that had both a proper qwerty keyboard and touchscreen as I wanted to see how Windows Mobile had developed since I had an Ipaq 3970 it lasted all of 6 days. My priorities have changed and I no longer lust for a touchscreen at all whilst many other don't even consider a smart phone to be one without a touchscreen which is there right to choose . IMO there really are no right or wrong devices only what each user prefers and works best for their needs.
I do however think the E90 is a class leading device and the ultimate business tool even with out a touchscreen.

I read somewhere it is possible to use the built-in gps with 3rd party satnav software. Just need to wait for the 3rd party satnav developer to update the software with ability to read from the in-built gps. |

Well according to what i have read by Michal over at my Symbian the limitations of the inbuilt GPS will not work with any 3rd party software. Especially as Nokia are launching there own mapping solution with charges for voice direction i would imagine that is true so if you use the inbuilt GPS it produces a nice revenue stream for them. I mean there not stupid now are they.

I for one would have to disagree on the fact that especially the latest three commies were a two handed tool. For one I have seen allot of my friends in the M.E. use the phones in one hand to chat on msn. With time I myself too developed the one hand technique. Its quite easy to do with a bit of practice and normal length thumb.
Back on track, I am quite sure that the e90 will be a great hit. Probably will have the thing preordered from nokia. But for all the fans and I am quite sure of you are reading this thread too. Will you guys not miss the feel of s80 or the past dedicated, in design, to the Communicator Operating Systems. That to me gave it a more of a magical touch to the phone and kept me from quickly moving on to other mobile gimmicks.

Whilst in it's day S80 was as you put it quite special IMO opinion S60 3rd Edition especially now with FP1 is a much more advanced OS and has so much support for additional apps already and not forgetting it also now so fast it really is a step up and forward from S80 which lets face it is old hat now. IMO anyone that thinks the E90 will be a flop needs to be committed to an Asylum as they must be barking mad. If anything i think the E90 will attract more people rather than less than the original commies as it is such a good and easy OS to use.

I totally agree with you but I remember since my first commie that i used the 9110 they all had a dedicated OS. I’m not bullying the idea of keeping it, just remember that it was always something new. I’m probably feeling reminiscent as to me the originally commie will pass away with the launch of the e90. This can no longer be called with affection "a brick". Sure it’s big but it’s been styled, and perhaps it’s just me but I miss the simplicity of the old commies' designs.
Btw up till now what’s your favorite commie to date...? AND no I’m not posting just BS, because we all know that the e90 is the techiest out of the lot. Nah I mean what commie will stick to your thoughts as something that you loved. To me it will always be the 9110. For starters it was abouts the only phone, at the time, that could transfer ring tones via IR. It was very exclusive. And last but by far not the least the way it sounded sort of Polyphonic.
So welcome e90 but never farewell to your ancestor the 9110

I see there are some saying that they prefer the P9xx over the E90, because the E90 (in their eyes) is ugly designed compared to the P9xx series!
Who gives the f**k about that!?!
Design is NOT one of the keyfactors in a cellphone - neither is weight or batterytime!
If the battery can last for a day that's enough - just put the phone in the charger when you go to sleep, and it is ready for the next day!
No, there are ony 3 keyfactors that count when selecting a cellphone: features, features and features!
And the E90 got them all - almost!
Why oh why, has Nokia dropped the fax!?! Isn't the E90 a business-phone? Any busines with respect for themselves has a fax - and I surely use it almost every week!
BRING BACK THE FAX, NOKIA!!!
This could be a serious showstopper for me! |

Now this is something i do agree with as i will always take a slightly larger device over a smaller one as like you it's features and spec are what are most important to me. I really don't care how nice looking someone else thinks my device is as long as it performs to my expectations and meets my needs that is always my priority. Function over form every time IMO that's not saying i don't like a good looking device just that size really isn't a problem for me hence a large N93 and a small 8800 Special Edition they both fulfil my different needs.

Now you're beeing silly. You can't say what is and what isn't a keyfactor in a phone as a fact... We all have different needs, and I can assure you that there are some that do hold the design as the most important feature in a phone, as there are others who think highest of a good battery time. And they are fully entitled to that opinion.
Now, if you would have said "keyfactor in a smartphone", you would at least have made some sense since E90 sure is one, and never was intended as a 'design' or 'fashion' phone.
I'm thinking of getting one myself. Having a nice big display with a comfortable keyboard along with a powerful and stable OS seems really nice. |
