Actually Sony has developed a new screen technology that can display 200K++ colors.. that's like an 18-bit or so screen. So it wouldn't be a shocker to see a 65K screen on the T68i successor.
The P800 however should have a 65K screen by the time it comes out... 12-bit will be old news by 2003. |

p800's lcd is capable of displaying 16bit colours, it's just a matter of software upgrade

ok let me explain the screen is like an lcd on a pc screen
your pc can display 256 to 24 bit colour
if the p800 has an tft lcd like a pc does it should be able to display (in theory) 24 bit colour |

i dont think it is that simple, there are other issues to it... i can;t back it up neither can i define it, but i strongly believe you cant do it, the regular monitor is stn matrix and not tft, so then according to you theory t68i could go to the 24 bit depth right? me confused...

I am also confused. I would like to know what exactly is the limitation behind our T68's from having only 256 colors? Why cant it support more? I think it makes sense that it could considering that older lap tops from 6 or 7 years ago had this screen tech and had more than 256 colors. Whats the real tech behind all this?
Someone with real tech knowledge please respond. Thanks.

Well, I think its not a software limitation, but a hardware's one. All the drawing on the screen it's done by the LCD's controller. The firmware on the MCU, which is the main CPU of the T68i, just sends commands (like draw a line or write a bitmap) to the LCD's controller. The later is responsible for refreshing the screen, and the one on T68i only supports 256 colors. So I think its impossible to get more than 256 colors without replacing hardware... the screen should be able to reproduce them, but the controller won't send the signals which are needed to do so.
At least this is how embedded system used to work...
P.S.: This is just my personal opinion, comments welcome...

You can bet that if an upgrade was easy, the P800 would already be listed with a 65k colour screen (or higher!), let's face it, they've had enough time to give it a fecking holographic screen!
I think you'll find that it's hardware and not software that determines the colour depth. In particular it's the amount of video RAM (very fast memory where the 'bits' that are used to form the picture are stored). The more colours (the higher the colour 'depth') the more of this memory you need. Just the same way your PC graphics card has a fixed maximum number of colours, any other digital device will also have a finite number of colours/resolution. You could theoretically reduce the screen resolution and increase the number of colours, but I can't see this being very viable on a phone (unless it was a mode specifically for games). The actually screen probably doesn't have an upper limit (my analogue LCD panel monitor doesn't).

Does anyone have any experience from taking pics with the P800? Is it easy to handle? I don't understand why the lens is unprotected? Has anyone tried the memory stick? Lots of questions but I am curious and waiting anxiously for the ubermodel. |
