I have quite an expensive Hi-fi and even with it on full blast I cannot hear this noise. I can just hear it using my phone when the volume is on max. So does the phone use something different for audio?

Yeah, a high pitched tone.
I don't know what frequency it is but they played it on the radio the other evening and I could hear it and I am definitely not a teen.

It's alright, I can annoy my sister with it and my parent's can't hear it so it's all good fun!

i read in a news that this sound was supposed to be a deterent for teens(in UK), thats used by shop owners who dont want teenagers hangin around their shops...you can try searching for different sound ranges...I could only hear up to 17Mhz im 28 YO and its very very faint, and almost inaudible.
it seems though that the weakness has been used as a strength...
Some teens may not be able to hear it because of auditory receptor damage...which is usually a result of prolonged exposure to very loud sounds...
edit : heres the link to the news...

and heres the link to listen to the sound ranges

i have to warn you though, the inaudible sound will make you nauseaus and drowsy...

The tone posted here really hurts.
I find other versions milder than this.

I seem to be able to hear all of those. I wonder what frequency they are using? - I created some high frequency sounds, and can only just hear up to 17000Hz.
I think that's reasonable for a 39 year old with the loud music I've been exposed to in my youth
but still, offering these "ringtones" to kids under the mistaken belief their oldies won't be able to hear is a bit misleading. Actually, it's daylight robbery!
