this E series won't kick P990's ass in any way. I think it's on a different segment that is more focused on connectivity. but i think 3G without videocalling is just dumb. If i needed a fast connection, i'd turn to wifi (which is available) rather than burn my money on 3G that costs by the kilobyte!

I see the P990i as some sort of geek device. Yet it tries to please a bit everybody and pack all the stuff (business, multimedia etc.) in one package. There's only one problem: it doesn't shine in any of these areas. It has intermediate business/enterprize features compared to some devices, which are going to sell at the same time. And same goes for multimedia features.
BTW. You don't need two cameras to make a videocall...And if you still didn't notice, those E-devices are aimed to corporates/enterprizes and business people. Videocalls and still imaging are hardly the features that those intrest groups are seeking from a device, which is a tool for them to make their work more effectively while they are out of office. |

I like when people say Nokia tries to catch up on .... when it has taken months to to be able to release a phone with WiFi support, for instance.... Nevermind, dream on.
Not to mention MSC 11 now supported in Nokia phones. ??
Quadband GSM + WCDMA band. ?
finally acknowledging the need for a keyboard to decently write emails. Nokia communicators have had that for years and years.
Etc.

C'mon david1975, 6822 and E70 are completely different, if we omit their form factors!
6822 was a series 40 EDGE phone with a poor screen. I always lacked smartphone features with 6822. It was good at one thing, texting. But for emails etc, not quite the killer.
Now we're talking S60 with a very very good screen, EDGE, 3G and WLAN!
Like in boxing, all boxers are.... boxers. But there are different categories: heavy weights etc. |

btw. those new nokia suppose to support ActiveSync protocol, which means direct syncrhonization OTA with MS Exchange. well quite an important news.
other thing is that E60 and E70 have got still the good old connector, what is a very good think for people like me haveing nokia chargers all over the place I am on a regular basis

Someone said 'SE hurts Nokia' , the numbers seem to indicate otherwise - Nokia has 1/3 of the multi billion cell market , while SE has so far the worst year in their history :-( I think even Alcatel manage to do better. 3 quarter numbers will be released shortly but sadly SE is not expected to brake any profit records.I personaly thinks Nokia looks at its 'immediate' competition.Motorola (3) and especialy Samsung (2) may pose a problem. As for the small manufacturers (less then 10%) I don't think anyone is splitting any haires.

For it simply makes them feel better
I guess they feel pride saying Nokia fighting as opposed to saying LG fighting They want to be compared to THE big one, not a small one
Big vendors such as Motorola, Samsung are very likely targets. But in a competitive market, you must take care of all your competitors for a very simple reason that small competitors make altogether up for a big one.

i think nokia worries more about RIM/WM/Palm than SE in the enterprise segment. The e-series (together with 9300/9500/7710) is Nokia's way of solidifying its position in this segment.
SE presence in the enterprise segment is virtually non-existence. The only phone SE has which have any chance to compete in this segment is the P9XX series. Unfortunately, due to overpricing and lacklustre specs, the number of P9XX sold is miniscule compare to the other enterprise smartphones.
So can the new P990 deal SE back into the enterprise segment? It has the potential provided SE plays its card right (i.e. price it competitively.)

What? Are you on both sides of this arguement?? None of the Nokia E-series is "properly" suited to corporates/enterprises business clients. Maybe for those that pay for their OWN phones, but not for employees issued a corporate phone to access their MS Outlook Exchange emails while mobile. I work for a coporate company. IBM. And they check your phone, everyday before entering past the security desk to make sure that your phone doesnt have a camera & memory card slot. They also check for USB keys & CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RWs. all this when you enter & leave the campus. Because their under contract - just like employees are - with their clients to protect the proprietory information & security of their information. The E60 has a camera & memory card slot. Fails in the security check. The E61 has a memory card slot. It too fails. The 70 has a camera & memory card slot it also fails. The SE P990i too fails. So would the Motorola Q as well. ALL of RIM's BlackBerry's dont have expandable memory card slots. They also dont have camera's. They would pass this security test. And if provisioned on a corporates server (MS Outlook Exchnage Server or Lotus Notes Domino) then they can be locked remotely so that EVEN a firmware upgrade or downgrade (yes the OS can be downgraded) wouldnt unlock the device. This lock is seperate from SIM card lock. This is a AES DES encryption lock! Nothing is gonna hack it short of 1year of continuous uptime on a mainframe! Its a proven solution that coporations trust. Read up about it before comparing anything to it. I do tech support for them as well; although at a limited level.
Now that is out of the way.
The P990i offers supreme camera quality pictures to anything out there because it uses the same technology proven already in the K750/W800 phones. Nokia is close with the N90 using Carl Zeiss lens but isnt gonna work on the Eseries or other 2 Nseries. That is multimedia. SE's solution for music could be improved, but Nokia doesnt have anything that compares as anyone knows of yet (N91 & 3250 are preliminary so any previews are not contrary).
The Nokia E61 doesnt offer anything email support wise that the P990i should be capable of. So their evenly matched here. Sure 802.11i/e/g is much better but because its so slim, I'm thinking that lack of antenna signal strength is the reason for those technologies in use. We'll see though after production line is launched and available. |
