I get a feeling that anytime now Tahir is going to jump out of the woodworks to reinforce the gospel of Vodafone and their Live portal. So they're launching tv...that most of their subscibers won't probably be using..why can't they just a put an analogue receiver in the phone...but no, that won't make them any money.
Six months down the line when you decide to sell your "cheap" Vodafone-branded 6680 you'll probably get a fraction of the price of what the unbranded one is going for- sometimes cheap is not always good.

Sometimes making up stories isnt to good to!!! I think it will keep its value(used) with peoples understanding of phones, vodalive will probably sell for more.... one more item to add to the specs list! |

@786KBR,
For what it's worth, that's certainly not the case here in the UK.
Do a search on a place called ebay for a start. Then compare prices of branded phones with sim-free/unbranded phones in exactly the same condition,ie. new.
Want me to provide some 'Buy-It-Now' links as proof?
Better still, compare second hand prices between branded and unbranded handsets on auction sites like eBay,in the same condtion to be fair.
Again, this is in the UK,and thus I can't say I have sufficient evidence of SA 'thinking' or market preference regarding this, but I can't see why it would be that different.

@da wanqsta: It wouldn't be that different at all. It should be said that networks in SA don't lock their phones (this might be only the case with a few service providers)
I think it'll be more difficult to sell a phone with external branding...the likes of the Z500 or all those el cheapo Motorola's in Vodacom's catalogue.

@ brix,
True, with branding almost inevitably means a locked phone here, and this network-limiting factor obviously has an effect on resale value.
I should have also mentioned that initially.
Even so,one could take into account new branded AND unlocked cellphones and they will still be obviously cheaper here than sim-free.
An example:
The Orange-branded spv-C550 (made by HTC) is seriously luring me,with its new version of Windows Mobile, megapixel camera and video,Bluetooth, music player for different formats, plus 512mb card as standard, leads for the tv included,etc,etc...but apart from the fact that it is locked(although they are easy enough to get unlocked),all the Orange crap loaded on it is also a put-off.Sure,if I wanted to be with the Orange network,no probs, but as I have mentioned before, they ain't the cheapest. Trouble is,they are currently the only UK network stocking this handset, although T-Mobile has one quite similar. To buy this phone sim-free costs over £320 from either www.expansys.com or www.mobilefun.co.uk.
They are selling them in the Orange shop for £109.99 plus trade in of your old brick,or £129.99 without.
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop[....]_spv_c550/detail/pay_as_you_go
Now even if I bought it from Orange and immediately unlocked it for about £10,then bought a sim-free one from one of the above-mentioned stockists,it's obvious which handset will fetch more money (by a country mile) on ebay.(or amazon,or...etc.)

I'm enjoying myself with the Verichat app. It's bloody nice earlier this afternoon I chatted to Glenny who's one of my buddies on esato. Hey guys the wind is gusting like a motha in Cape Town right now, the air is filled with the traces of a veld fire...it's going to hectic for firefighters down here.

i'm currently in a little dorpie called Kirkwood, about 1hour's drive from home. Came up here with a buddy who's installing a new accounting programme on their server. Helluva job transferring all their paperwork to the server via laptops and linkages, been sitting at this bloody desk since 07h30. What's interesting is that for such a small town they've got serious moola, seeing that this is the heart of citrus country. Gotta haul ass back home asap, just remembered we've an 8pm coffee date with the couple who's bought our house. Check it out, the managing partner at the IT company is Siva, proud owner of a P800 (in retirement at home) and P910. He uses them to make calls and send text messages. Clueless as to the full functionality of those beauties. What a damned waste.

Yeah it's a bloody waste to have a smartphone and only use it for text and calls. Downloaded Agile...now I see what the fuss is all about.

Welcome to Esato and this thread, John, nice to hear from another brother.
I wonder if anybody else managed to hear Harold Pinter's speech on the occasion of his acceptance of the Nobel Literature Prize. I enjoyed his scathing attack on the Bush/Blair marriage, and on politicians in general, denouncing them as power-hungry fools spinning a web of deceit to maintain their positions. He was particularly scornful of Blair, describing him as Bush's lapdog, even more so in view of the American statement that ...to criticize our conduct in Guantanomo Bay constitutes an unfriendly act. You're either with us or against us...

no no no! You guys are not getting it.... The SA market still thinks that Sps manufacture phones! people are stupid and those who are aware of the differences have the cash to buy a new one...
U wouldnt believe how dumb these consumers are, they only want the vodafone name now... i dont particularly like vodafone and even when I tell people I took v/live of my phone they like "why are stupid" I dont even bother trying to explain...
Some guys even reloaded the v/live software.... it really aint all that bad, but it can be a bit frustrating... |

Damn so it's just been confirmed, South African consumers are the most stupid.
Why would anyone want to flash his phone to Vodafone Live fw...I saw the menus on the V800 and that convinced me that Vodafone Live wasn't all that.

Sadly, i must agree with both Brix and KBR. I've noticed in the last few weeks that Vodafone has, for some weird reason, become a status symbol. It's probably got to do with their sponsorship of soccer teams, gents... You know our ppl are football-crazy, so anything with a football brand is desirable. I'm certain that if 02 started releasing branded phones here they'd sell just as well.

Another reason I don't like Vodafone is because they sponsor Manure...Don't talk about O2.
Interesting a colleague of mine did a story asking kids what they wanted for Christmas, and of those she interviewed not one mentioned a cellphone. The most desirable gift was the PSP.
