Well after having my p990i for 48 hrs ill give my opinions on it.

First of all im quite impressed with the build quality, seems sturdy enough and isnt that much a brick of a phone i thought it would be. Its quite unobstrusive as well, been sitting in my back pocket and ive had to check a few times if its still there lol. Although looks wise i definitely prefer my p900/910 to be honest. The p990i is too silvery i find lol but its nice though.

The UIQ system seems to be pretty responsive in my opinion, it does slow down now and again and thats probably due to the ram issue. As it only starts with 15 or so mb of ram, which is quite low. Hopefully SE will fix this in the next firmware update as its definitely not enough to really and truly multi task.

Gripes i have with the p990i??

Well my first one is the screen isnt very good when in the sunlight, can hardly see a thing. Ive adjusted the brightness settings etc etc but to no avail, the fact its missing a contrast setting is glaring error. But i guess just need time to get used to it really, not that big a concern to me.

Secondly you cant seem to set the rss feed as a shortcut which i find annoying but then i could be missing something here??? but from what im seeing there is no way to set it as desktop icon or as a shortcut. Unless your in FO mode then it does have a shortcut button but i prefer to have it whilst in FC mode.

Thirdly i find it strange that when in the contacts menu and you press the 'more' button you cant actually send an email. My k800i seems to have this feature but the p990i doesnt??, i find that quite strange as the p990i is a more powerful phone and should have this feature. Hopefully SE might fix this in the next firmware update.

I think my major gripe with the p990i is the volume of the media player. Now i use the BT headset HBH DS970 and i was quite shocked at how low my mp3s sounded through the headset. Now i have it set to full the volume on both the headset and phone but its awfully quiet. My mp3s are all re-encoded at 100db which i think works fine for me but compared to my k800i, the p990i is extremely low in volume and i kinda like my music loud hehe. But thats only through the headset, through the phone itself its loud. So i find this to be a major gripe for me, other than that it works brilliantly and lists the mp3 tune on the headsets lcds display. If anyone has a fix for this or could let me know if its the same on their unit then that would be cool. Somehow i think its more or less the same for all the p990i's out there. Again hopefully SE will fix this in the next firmware update. Also not to forget that you cant manually adjust the equaliser to the way you want it is another tiny gripe, hopefully another media player will be out that will allow this??...if not then hoping SE will fix this in the next firmware update.

To be honest the only major crash ive had is earlier this morning, i was listening to my mp3s on the p990i and received a message. SO off i went to reply to it but before i could hit send it crashed and it crashed pretty badly...so much so that it was stuck on a white screen and no matter how many times i pressed the power button on the top it would not respond. So in the end i had to physically remove the battery and re-start it again. Again not so much a worry to be honest as ive previously had the p800/900/910 and they crashed pretty badly at various points of use.

Anyways those are my opinions of the unit, am i going to keep it??. Yes i will because despite its niggles i love this phone and the fact that SE will release new updated firmware fixes is a positive. Alot of people will say oh it shouldnt have so many bugs but then tell me which smartphone out there is 110% perfect at release, none that i know of. Every phone has its niggles, hell my k800i has its own little problems but they arent problems that make the phone unuseable and same applies to the p990i in my opinion.
Granted SE could have released this phone without any bugs whatsoever but then i dont think we would ever see it come to light if that was the case.

As i said i love this phone, its a lovely piece of kit and i would recommend it to anyone seriously thinking of getting a phone then a pda device. If its the other way around then i would say the WM5 devices would be good.

Other than the volume of the media player i would have to say im getting quite fond of this phone.

What's it like for playing music - is the software nice and simple for transferring from PC to P990i? I am thinking (once i get the P990i) to sell my iPod and buy a 4gb/8gb memory stick...

Your thoughts?

thanks

Well thats what im thinking but after putting a few mp3s on the p990i, i have to admit that im not impressed with the volume of the unit. It was very very low on my hbh ds970 compared to my k800i which is quite a bit louder. Think ill have to put my w810i headphones in the p990i when i get home to see if its the actual phone or the headset that is low, the w810i headphones dont have its own volume control whereas the hbh ds970 does.
Other than that it seems to be fine.

I've tried all the videos from Johnex' site

I find they stall briefly at the beginning but then play very smoothly to the end

I can't comment on how they've been encoded so make of that what you will.

I guess a true video test requires specific parameters for the video production and I'm not much good at that stuff (I rely on you lot!)

Woah got a white screen just by reading your post lol.
About the white screen though, just hold the power button for around 15 secs or so and the phone will turn off.

EDIT: hehe, still learning on the encoding stuff lol, but i think i have mastered it now, will post some new videos later or tomorrow

If your talking about the main standby screen then no i dont think you can to be honest, although if you click on the right icon it takes u into the screen that lists those functions etc.
But i havent been able to to get any of that info on the main screen in FC mode or FO mode.
Perhaps someone knows of a way, im still trying to find my way around the unit lol

that's interesting about the volume for MP3s - my iPod has volume aplenty and I like to listen to music using about 75% of it so it will be hard to adjust to big drop in volume. Hopefully the next firmware will give it a bit more ooomph!

i wonder (maybe someone has already tried) if the volume changes when MP3s are listened to via a 3.5m adaptor?

Hello, got my phone today from Expansys. Can someone tell me whether all the supposed bundled software that was listed on the SE site was included with this batch of phones? I don't see anything. How can I get hold of Opera, Wayfinder, Wisepilot, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

I've found it all now. Sorry to waste your time!
