Congrats to all the new owners. I've searched this forum and haven't read too much regarding WiFi on the P990. I have a few questions:

1) Does it maintain a connection or drop the connection frequently? On my Nokia E61 the connection is not consistent.

2) Does it support 128 bit encryption?

3) Does push e-mail via Blackberry Connect or Exchange ActiveSynC work while connected to a WiFi network?

4) Is there an option to set up a Connectivity group account that seamlessly transfers from a GPRS/UMTS connection to a home WiFi network, and vice-versa?

Any insight is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Hi, the connection on my phone has now been active for 15 hours non stop, so you could say its stable. The phone has support for wpa-psk, i think thats 128bit encription. If you make an internet group and you have wifi at the top, a hotspot later, and gprs last, the phone tries to connect in that order, dunno if it seamless, i think it tells you that the connection died at first, but not if you are connecting for the first time.

@masseur: cheers!

Will the P990 work in the US on Cingular networks (or the like)?

Has anyone in the US tried this yet?

Thank You

@jesse6666

I mentione dearlier that the P990 retail box included a leaflet which refers to the P990a so perhaps a US specific version is in the works. ....I wonder if SE plan to release this US version in September and so they can have a global product announcement...interesting...just speculating...

Try Mobilecityonline.com (located in NYC). They do not have it yet, but are expecting it 1-2 weeks after the EU release.

Expansys US site also has it listed as pre-order.

I am really frustrated now, I asked my local dealer here in India, and he said the launch price of the P990i (whenever it releases) will be around Rs.34000. This is like US $732. Everywhere else, this phone is selling for close to $1000. I actually ordered from Expansys, but cancelled my order out of sheer guilt. Is this phone really worth $1000??

I mean If we all can wait out a few days, SE will release this phone, and maybe it could be a new updated batch too. I think it just makes pure sense to either

1) Wait for official release, and teach those price gougers a lesson.
2) Boycott the goddamn P990i for being late, buggy, and outdated and teach SE a lesson.

.... Methinks I'm personally gonna wait. I assure you guys that P990i's successor is already finalized, and will be launched before 2007. Trust me, SE has had plenty of time during this mess of a launch to get it right the second time around.

Cheers!!

I also mentioned when the P990 white paper was first published that the p990a is mentioned in there. Its just strange that I have seen no official announcement for the 'a' version nor does it appear on the US site

the last paragraph offers a hint of a North American version:

Now that it seems as though a P990a might actually make an appearance, is it worth it to wait for the "a" version if I live in the US and want to take advantage of high-speed internet?

Will the P990i work on US high-speed networks?

Thanks.

Well, the P990i will definitely work in the US for GSM, both on T-Mobile (which I use) and Cingular. As far as the high-speed part of it, it is kinda up in the air until the current FCC auction ends.

Cingular runs its UMTS on 1900. T-Mobile does not have UMTS yet, but has promised full USA roll-out in 2007 (+ they just bid $ 690 M for all the 3G bandwith on auction, outbidding Cingular, Verizon and Sprint combined 2 to 1!!! - yes, they are desperate to get the frequencies). There is even talk that they may roll-out 3G and 4G simultaneously, since they have been about 1-1.5 years behind competiton on US 3G.

Where it gets complicated is, the 2100 UMTS band is in the auction and will go to the winner (i.e. probably T-Mobile). T-Mobile has not made a statement whether they will deploy UMTS on the 2100 band to match global standards, deploy on 1900 for the very few US specific phones out there or whether they will do both.

As for the P990a version, it's also not known if it would have just EDGE, just dual-band UMTS (think it's called dual-band UMTS, i.e. 1900 and 2100) or both. My preference would be dual-band UMTS, since EDGE is really much slower than UMTS.

edit: I think I'm personally going to wait to either hear something official from T-Mobile to see if they will deploy on 2100 or if they will rent out the spectrum to maybe Cingular before getting a "i" version or see if there is definite news on a "a" release. UMTS not critical for me, since almost 90% of New York city has over 5 hot-spots readily available. Quite confident that my k800i will hold me over till then (and prices come down - hehe).

edit edit: Also ran across a story on Gizmodo.com about T-Mobile GAN/UMA testing they are doing with a select group of subscribers. For those of you who do not know, GAN is a technology (that is in theory 4G) that allows seamless switching between GSM, WiFi and UMTS for voice/data. It is not as simple as just having a WiFi access and WiFi phone, but includes backend software at the carrier to make the IP address look like a cell tower in your area.. So anyways, excited about a software solution i nthe future for P990 to allow GAN functionality.

Do an eBay search for P990i--there are multiple listings and several reputable sellers including x1387 and phonesource-usa. I bought my M600i from phonesource-usa and received it in 2 days from Hong Kong. Very easy transaction.

@ diatone

I have not had time to test the P990 yet, but the M600 worked with no problem whatsoever...
