I played with a live working X10 in an O2 store today & I was extremely underwhelmed Build quality & feel was nice but the screen seemed dark on max brightness & the menus not user friendly imo & I always take to phones quickly without ever needing a manual. I have decided after spending nearly half an hour playing with one. I don't like it
Phone?? What phone?? |

@saltoro and moogoo,
That is the option WCDMA only: means 3G only
GSM/WCDMA PREFERRED: means 2G or Edge/ 3G preferred
Another way to try to get GSM ONLY go into *#*# info #*#* (*#*# 4636#*#*)on dial pad...then go into phone info..scroll down to bottom, tab the WCDMA and see if you see a GSM only there
I was just defining the terms just in case someone else reading post didnt know.
That doesn't seem to be the case. I switched to "WCDMA only", and the data status icon remained as "3G". Testing between that and the "GSM / WCDMA preferred" option, I got pretty much identical results using Speed Test.
So I checked under the info menu (via the dial number), and the options there are different, as they are the following:
- WCDMA preferred
- GSM only
- WCDMA only
- Unknown
Switching to "GSM only", I was switched to EDGE (as confirmed by the connection icon, and by the much slowed Speed Test speeds) So it does seem that the default settings UI isn't giving the option for 2G "GSM only" despite it being available through the info dial menu.
I'll be curious to see if debranding changes this.

The Xperia has probably the brightest screen of any phone, you can see it in direct sunlight, just turn off the auto brightness. |

Ya. I though the screen seemed a bit dark and hard to see outside when out for a walk the other day. After turning off auto-brightness, it made a huge difference. Beautiful clear screen on this phone!
BTW: speaking of walks My Tracks is a wonderful app for anyone who hike/bikes/etc. and wants to track where they've gone.

Please compare the following pics:

They were taken merely seconds after each other with the exact same camera settings and lighting.

I think the auto-brightness settings are designed to use lower brightness in darker environments as to be less stressful on the eyes. However, I think SE went a bit overboard on this front. I'd love to see a hack to adjust the auto presets.
Xell: Out of curiosity what firmware are you running - .14 or .16?
...
On another note: here's an oddity I came across. I switched my data connection method to "GSM only" through the testing menu (dialing *#*#4636#*#*), as per my previous posting. Everything works fine. Put the phone into standby for a bit, using it tethered through PDANet.
Wake it up 5 minutes later, and the auto-orientation no longer works (ie: tilting the phone on it's side won't switch to landscape). The orientation setting in the Settings menu hasn't changed, and disabling then re-enabling it doesn't help. Neither does switching back to 3G. Reboot the phone and it's all good again though.
Happened to me twice in a row.

I'm on 16.
It makes difference, worth to update.
I didn't like the auto brightness. There should be an adjustment for that because it mostly too dark for me.
BTW, when the battery is under %15 or %10 (not sure), screens darkens itself.
I really love this phone

I think some motorola phones do this. It's quite obvious what's it for.

Yes. Lately I haven't seen one being sold locally. I'm not wanting to buy it from outside.

Box was completely sealed. Seller emailed me an unlock code which worked like a charm. Inbox I got the 16GB MicroSDHC, the phone of course, user manuals, travel charger, and standard stereo handsfree (not MW600).
Gonna order the MW600 and a car charger. Was looking at car cradles but haven't found one I liked... if anybody has experience with some, let me know. I'm still waiting on my clearcoat to get shipped. I'm hoping it will arrive by Saturday since it's only coming from 3 hours away. They just need to mail it to me already...
