The Nokia Communicators are more akin to the Psion 3xx line. Mind you, I don't mean that in a denigrating way: My first PDA was a Psion Series 3a and in some ways it was the most complete PDA I've ever owned. With it, I could do everything I could do with my PC at the time: Process words, sheet spreads, base data, do games, go online (those were the days of BBSs and Fidonet, at a staggering 9600 baud!), print stuff. All virtually right out of the box (mine came with a print adapter and a games pack -- Yes, Steve, Fairway was on it! --, so there).

These days, almost anything on that list costs extra or is more difficult to do. But hey! I can watch movies and listen to seventies heavy rock, so it's all okay, eh?

although I used the best Casio and Sharp organisers before the psion II (which I still have) and 3a (and later 5/5a) I do agree with you regarding the 3a capabilities (and yes, I was a 3lib/fairway,steve litchfield fan in those days too). I have also owned and used all nokia communicators and all P series models and can say that they each have their own attributes that appealed to me but none really provided everything I needed in one package
Indeed the only device to date that has done that is the windows mobile devices and specifically the i-mate JAM as its both a windows mobile device and a phone in one unit.
No doubt I will check out any new P series with a hopeful outlook I still fear that they will no longer meaure up to the windows mobile offerings

I have been a loyal SE and Ericsson fan for years.
Lately, SE's disregard for the american consumer has disappointed me.
The only thing that will hold me, is a P series with WIFI and a Windows OS. Ohh.. also 850 MHZ.
Other wise I will probably go for the II XDA or III XDA.
I've litterally held off purchasing my next two phones (Play phone and Work Phone ). Waiting on a W800 with 850MHZ and a P series with Windows / WIFI.

huh.. WIFI with 850Mhz? won't it kill ya battery?
seriously, if they could make use of the psp processor function. it will save them lots of battery consumption.
when it's in phone mode... the processor will run on a very low speed... once it activated the PDA function the processor will fun on full speed.

I must admit I am waiting for this SE before making my upgrade choice, but if this is the only option SE are offering and it looks as poo in rel life then I may be going for the new SPV.

Actually I think the P950 is quite nice. It doesn't seem that they're making the screen that much smaller. I've always thought the p910 had too much room above the screen. To make the P950 a great phone all it needs now is wifi.

It'll be a cold (resp.: hot) day in hell when I entrust a Windows-based device with my data.
I think I'm going to hold on to my P910 for a while (well, it won't stop working when a new version comes out, right?) and meantime check out the Linux Smartphone scene. I do like the Sharp Zaurus series and, after my emigration to SE Asia, they and others will be a lot more easily available than they are over here. |

Well from my point of view, the P series hasnt really made any real jump forward since the p800. a little memory here, a little speed there, thats really about it.
Now I myself will either go the QTEK 9000, basically I need connectivity stuff like RDP and mail, and the other crud that comes along with it, most likely over 3g.
The P series is seriously laking in the connectivity area. The software isnt what I had hoped for on the symbian side at all.
Now if the the p1000 or whatever has some impressive connectivity software then its worth it, but a better screen with the same res, lets just drop it and move to the qtek (well for me anyways).

What a shame, all the hype, and now some image is leaked with a few specks and all the hardcore SE fans are now in doubt. As an avid SE fan and always have been since the basic ericsson days, as much as I don't want to, I feel i will be turning to the dark side at the end of my contract and leaving se for a year or so.
I will still however keep hold of my P910 on the side, and will stick with sony by purchasing a PSP for my film needs, but I think SE will loose the battle of the top smartphone with this p950.

Another thing to add to the mix is Symbian Signed. Anyone have more info on that? |
