@nokiamaniax
Trust me, Sofia will have HSDPA Otherwise, yes, it'll be a very poor decision indeed.

@those complaining about menu icons/design
Already been implemented, at least with the range. Flash menus are implemented very well by

@mustafabay
Those rumours (at least the K610 one) have been proven false. Why would SE make a K610 successor with better specs than the K810? Those are just wishful specs from a dreamer TBH
Even the W825 rumour looks false...

@goldenface
W810's been replaced by the W610, K750 --> K550 and K610 --> W660.

Interestingly, in his N95 camera review, Eldar from M-R says that Sofia will be shipping in SEPTEMBER, a period that AFAIK wasn't mentioned before.
Also, he said that Sofia's mp3 player will have Walkman 3.0!!! (but as we know, Sofia will not be a smartphone)
He also mentioned that Sofia would be roughly the same size as N95;
although this doesnt make sense to me.
I really hope Sofia will be considerably slimmer than N95

Not quite right there.

Eldar wrote:

In terms of mobile phones closest analogue cell Nokia N95 will be in September in Sofia product of Sony Ericsson. The same size corps, a number of improvements for a series of CyberShot and emphasis on music component (3.0 Walkman and this is not a phone). Products occur over time, and even in future comparisons would be meaningless, because different price positioning value opportunities. Produced by Sony Ericsson is the expensive, but it will later.

Eldar did write that Sofia would be out in September, and being the new flagship Cyber-shot, it will have even more enhancements. I'm assuming enhancements like photo key lights, maybe more manual controls etc.

And on top of that, to emphasize the and Cyber-shot segregation, he said that phones will have v3.0 Walkman player with its own enhancements, such as DSP chips etc.

Also, rog on MR has said that the Sofia will have a lens cover, but not the one that we're used to, so I'm imagining something like this:

So, instead of physically opening the lens cover, you'd just hold the camera button, and it'd open automatically.

UPDATE:

  • Sofia will have motorised lens cover (similar to Sony T33).
  • Sofia will be released in September or October.
  • The Cyber-shot line will continue with more camera related enhancements.

the only problem i see in their strategy, is that it could occur, that they slowly move away from their customers
i for example, don't need a cybershot phone with 5mp or a walkman phone with 2gb memory
i want a classy designed phone, built with high quality maybe with different materials(carbon fiber,leather,stainless steel...). it should be small, have a good readable screen and 3G(orHSPDA)

I think Sofia might look like that sony cam,which is nice imo. Brushed metal is also pretty neat...but september is a bit disapointing.
I hope SE will gives us some new uiq phones sooner than that

@shaliron

the camera cover/lens shown on that Sony camera is what i thought it to be like..... well going by the spy pics of the 'unknown' 5mp phone (test bed) it didnt have one, but as it had a circle design, i thought they would put something like this on it....

I tried to make a better translation of the M-R article about N95 camera and the comparison with Sofia:

"As for mobile phones the closest analogue to the camera of N95 will appear only in September in the Sofia, a product of Sony Ericsson. It will have the same size of the body, several improvements for the CyberShot series, and an emphasis on the musical part (Walkman 3.0 and it's not a smartphone). The two products are scattered in time and even in the future the comparison of the two will be pointless, due to different positioning, price and abilities. The product from Sony Ericsson will not be as expensive, but it will also appear later. It is understandable that the magic number 5-megapixels will make many comparisons of their cameras, but in my opinion ther are not many reasons to compare them."

BTW there are also comparisons of photos taken by N95 and K800 which show that a lot of processing is done after taking the picture with N95 (for example the one with the tomatoes). This is probably due to: small phone = small lens and small sensor + 5MP = less light/pixel = lots of noise = lots of processing = blurred details

Based on what Eldar said:It's obvious that SE has broken their cycles k700-k750-k800 sofia will have nothing to do with the K philosophy ,it will be a sort a mega-phone by SE ,even far more expensive than a k800 and even not a smartphone,release date also is an insult for the loyal customers!!!
SE also dont want to do any improvement before that n95 clone,so even if a walkman or M phone comes out those 3 months it will only have obsolete tehcnology and screen size.
ok SE now I am seriously considering samsung,motorala or even the hideous nokyas

@semo
From the review, does it say that Sofia will be and Cyber-shot? It's quite confusing.

And I've added a new "updates" section to the first post. No more blue text, just the updates section up top with the date last updated.
May add some other things later.

Septembers too late for me - I guess I am going to go out and see whats on the market just now.

Also the "automated" lens cover - its sounds nice but i think i would prefer the old style manual version - with the old method its easier to switch to camera mode and there is less chance of you taking photos accidentally.

try to keep the DSP and cybershot enhancements discussions separated

they're also shuffling some of the Q3/Q2 release dates

so look out for another announcement in individual markets when they're ready (individually)

it's hard to tell what he means by that, i translated in detail but it can mean different things. The way i understand it is: it will be a CyberShot with some new features and it will include the new generation 3.0 walkman player (not necessary with the Walkman brand). And he emphasizes on Sofia not being a smartphone.
Does it have to be a smartphone to have a walkman 3.0 in it?

Sony Ericsson published a press release earlier this morning stating there will be a media and analyst event after the Q1 results on the 20th. Maybe this is a day whe should look forward, or not. Fingers crossed!

They don't usually announce handsets on the same day as their Q1 results but I'll be alert on the 15th or thereabouts as this is a date thats been bounced around a bit.

Q1 looks good
money saved from R&D
since market uptake is slow (that's something they won't tell you explicitly)

blame the general European consumption pattern
blame vodafone
