I suppose I could put up with a mild hump-backed device if the optical gains were worth it - for instance a good Xenon flash.
Maybe the answer is a 'curved wedge' design, with all optics at the top of the phone and it being around 9mm thick, then tapering down towards the bottom of the phone to around 5mm, and being 5mm thick at the sides too.

I suggested a wedge design a year ago. Sony and their fascination with omnibalance... |

As much as I like Sony's Omni balance design I do feel it is becoming a bit stale. If this curved sensor is to make it into a future Xperia device I would'nt mind somthing similar to the old Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo with its curved back and its camera almost smack bang in the middle at its thickest point (13mm infact) . This would then remove the need for a hump and still keep a classy, balanced design. Click the link for a view of the rear of the Neo Just incase you forgot lol.

I still love this design personally, but tidy it up and update it slightly to match current trends eg. a taller screen aspect ratio, waterproofing, glass back cover, micro-usb...
Alas, after 2 years from concept release, even the body shape may never come to be.

Well, since Nokia by Microsoft is rumored to discontinue its 1020 successor and Samsung still believes in their crappy Zoom , Sony might as well steal the show with this new curved sensor (if they can mass produce it asap) in a full-fledged camera phone with a Xenon flash and a dedicated imaging chip. Though they should still have the main flagship along with this one, it's like a part of their flagship line.

Any insiders have info if this device is for first half or second half? my next smartphone is probably z4 but i would love even more a 6" display (z4 ultra?) with this promising spec. possible announcement with z4 at mwc? my guess would be second half but on the other hand sony uses the same camera sensor basically now for 3 generations of phones: z1, z2 and upcoming z3 so it would be a good thing if they can give z4 that new sensor as well. actually i would expect z4 to debut with that sensor and not a 6" display smartphone, don't anyone think this is a little odd decision considering they gave the z ultra a mediocre camera at best and now suddenly they does one with high end camera sensor? did they got influenced by the note line suddenly? anyhow, a good decision. |

Since Sony would not do significant hardware upgrade on Z3 family, it would be best to bundle the them with nice accessories such as the noise-cancelling earphones and smart band, as standard not promotional offer. At least by doing so, potential buyers would feel less robbed of their money because of the high selling price. I know Sony is in transition to 64-bit architecture and that's why I think they skipped Snapdragon 805. However, they have to make up for it somehow as their competitors are gonna released devices powered by the SOC 805. And the premium accessories bundled is the answer to that. |

Whatever comes out, I'm going to grab an Xperia Z3 unless Note 4 have higher build quality than my existing Note 3.
I had almost forgot how a solid built Sony phone felt like. This was until yesterday when I went to a Sony store to buy XBA-3IP. I also took my liberty to play with the phones and God.... It's so big difference.

Z3 vs Z1
Basically the same phone If you look from the back you don't see the difference - all logos are at the same place - only Xperia is moved a bit to the bottom
Front is the same as in this picture
Two holes in top and bottom are speakers
sides are round not cut as on z1 as in this link holding it in hands
Strap holes are on the left side not right as z1
weight - ca 20g lighter
width - ca 1mm less
length - ca 2mm more
thinner a bit
display size I think is 5.2 as Z2
on the left side usb+microsd is only usb and on the right side sim is replaced with sim+sd card
volume and shutter buttons are a bit bigger
Feels lighter and smaller if you hold it
SW version begins with 23.
Model D660x
Android 4.4.4
Quick settings are draggable to the right spot - not in menu as in z1
Otherwise the SW all looked the same as in Z2 at first glance
power button hold option has screen record option added (z1 had only screen capture)

Thanks. So Z3 is basically a face-lift model, since we don't expect any dramatic changes in hw. Any info about Z3 compact?

@motvikt
You misread him. notice he compared z1 to z3. He just said that the length of z3 is the same as z2 since z1 length is 144.4mm and z2 is 146.8mm so z3: 146.4mm. if his info is 100% accurate then z3 length is actually 0.4mm shorter then z2 while being slimmer, narrower and lighter. nice achievement in design considering the internals inside i say.

I hope the stereo speakers are improved, louder and more quality, but mostly louder!
