Thanks, I'll ask my dog's Vet about those drugs. He's presently on Ivermectin injections and there is a slight improvement. |

Hi Doc,
i'm planning on buying a full size gun this cming GS in july. Currently the biggest caliber handgun I have is a Sig P228, a compact as I am fond of compact and subcompact models. This is the only gun in my collection that is seeing extended time in the range. I also have a Mauser Luger 9mm but i'm trying to preserve it's condition. I use the beretta .380 once in a while so as not to loose "muscle memory" because this is my favorite carry gun. But recently " medyo nabibitin na ko sa range" especially when I was given sample time with full-size guns like the HK USP Expert. In other words diversifying into the higher caliber or full-size babies. The P228 is accurate but because of the shorter barrel... you know what i mean. What do you think is the perfect full-size gun for a neophyte like me? Should i first try out single-actions like the 1911 or Browning HP? Or are the DA HKs, Glocks like .45cal 21, S&W pistols or Steyr pistols the way to go? |

With the number of guns you have, I would hardly call you a 'neophyte"  All the guns you mentioned are nice, you'll just have to judge which fits your hand and shooting style well. Most of your current guns have double action mechanisms so that could probably figure in your final decision. If you're thinking of going into competition it also depends on what division you plan on entering. |

Thanks Doc, I forgot to tell you that I'm planning to get one thats "good to go" right out of the box. So maybe that eliminates the venerable 1911A1s because it seems that a great amount of fine-tuning is needed for it to be in optimum condition, except perhaps for the Para-ords which is big for my hands anyway. The USP Expert was big but was very pleasant to shoot. How about the Steyr M .40S&W which looks like a cross b/w a Walther P99 because of the grip angle and Glock because it has a polymer frame and a squarish slide. I saw an article of one and seems like it sits lower in the hand than the Glocks and the HK USPs?
I haven't received my BOG confirmation yet. My Dad is a " rifle & revolver man" thats why haven't had much input from him regarding on buying a full-size pistol. |

Doc, regarding on joining competitions, I think funshoots na lang for me 'cause I started late na on the hobby and am now in my early thirties so it would take a huge amount of effort na to catch up with
you guys in the competition world. Maybe joining someday in the production group level is the short term goal if ever i 've decided to take the plunge. I was a little bit of "frustrated" with the tech gadget hobby kaya I rekindled my passion with guns since depreciation is not an issue here; unlike in the techworld where models are outdated quarterly and no longer annually. So now I stick to the gadgets that still serve me well and am no longer trying to jump into the current "bandwagon". And with our hobby you can pass on these babies to the next generation (at the same time praying for more favorable laws regarding ownership) , unlike tech gadgets... I hope there would be a different set laws regarding antique gun collections and in legally owning all the toys you can collect so that we can reach a hobby utopia without leaving our beloved country. |

You do still have to have a decent gun for funshoots. If its good to go out of the box, you won't go wrong with Glocks and HK's. I don't have any experience with the Steyrs but I'm not too keen about that triangular sight configuration. If you're eyeing production division you will be best served with the Glock 17 or the CZ75. If you're leaning towards Standard division get an STI(preferably in .40 S&W), you won't ever look back. It's as close to gun perfection as you can get and personally, my buying binge(used to buy one gun a year) stopped when I acquired mine. Lost my taste for the plastic fantastics although my carry gun is still a Glock 30 as it fits my hand like a glove and is reliable as hell.
Although I've been a gunhead ever since I can remember, I started competing only when I was in my early thirties(I'm 38 now) and I don't think you should let that stop you. Always think of having fun as the first priority, awards and recognition should be secondary. Happy shooting

Regarding your BOG confirmation, that's supposed to be almost immediate. I now see your name "eHunt" in the list of GT members registered April 8. If you're still having problems you can email one of the moderators. Also make sure you're mailbox didn't block/divert the confirmation email as "Junk/trash/spam"

Doc I think you're right, the puzzle-like triangular sights of the Steyr would be complicated for me and could be slow in acquisition. And maybe an STI .40S&W would be perfect as I've heard good things about it. And yes age should'nt matter as long as you enjoy what you do. So I better save up on the STI because it is a little bit pricey. I was surfing at the BOG and Black Rifle and saw some AR pics, I think the M16/A15s have already reached the status of the 1911A1s when it comes to variety and customization.

Another thing fanning the flames for an ARtype is reading Stephen Hunter books like" Black Light". This is about a former USMC sniper investigating the death of his WW2 vet- Medal of Honor recipient turned policeman father, which he suspects was murdered by the military. The author really knows what he's talking about when it comes to guns. In this book the WW2/Korean War M3 carbine, Colt .38super and Knights AC SR-25 are in full focus. I wonder what its like to shoot the .308 AR-type rifle, I know my dad's dreaming of owning one ( right now he's enamored with M14s, giving me a chance to pry out an AR from him, he,he,he . Another book by Hunter is "Hot Springs" which is a Tommy gun, M2 carbine, BAR book; again featuring the Sniper son/Father cop tandem. Hunter was featured in GUNS mag and was given rave reviews by well known author Tom Clancy. They are even planning on making a movie out of it ,featuring Tommy Lee Jones as the father cop and Barry Pepper, the sniper in Saving Pvt. Ryan fame; as the sniper son. Gun buffs would enjoy these books; nice weekend reads when taking a respite from the summer heat at the open-air range. I bought the books at the Powerbookstore. |

Yes, the Elisco makes an excellent platform, same with the Bushmaster. Very few original Colt lower receivers in good condition can be found anyway. My Colt Commando which was all original developed a crack at the top of the buffer tube tower and I had to replace it with an Elisco lower receiver as I wasn't too keen about having it repaired. Works as good as the vietnam era antique it replaced. As I said you won't go wrong with the STI. I'll check out those books you mentioned. Here's a snapshot of the STI in case you haven't seen it from the previous posts

Whoa! That's really an awesome baby! Bomar sites and fiber optic front sight too... How much is the STI Custom 2011 Double-stack .40S&W nowadays? You really can't go wrong with that!

Doc I've read Darwin 25's thread on Colt and Elisco. Very informative for guys like me. Maybe thats why my dad's 'smith altered the gas system; for reliability. 'Have also gone to the Black Rifle Club, though it made me envious of them gunners from the states because of the lower prices and wide variety of choice of the ARs and it's accessories. Sana dito rin me 2nd ammendment. |

It seems that the gov't's attitude "to get the usual suspects" are at it again. What will happen to this country when law-abiding citizens are the ones suffering from the ineptness of the policemen. They should have been there in the first place so they could have apprehended Cong. Lanot's killers. Shaw blvd is in the heart of M.M.; what's their excuse now? I thought these checkpoints are geared towards the safety of us civilians, however uncomfortable for us?! If a former Congressman can be killed in the height of daylight; how can we, simple law-abiding citizens, survive such an attack by criminals? For the sake of argument, active policemen are caught in the act of robbing a money courier; I say if they're gonna ban firearms from law-abiding civilians, why not ban policemen carrying them inside the metropolis. Sort of following the examples set by English bobbies in London.

Nice Real Classics. My STI was made by Johnny Lim of Limcat Customs who's based in the U.S. Bought it slightly used for a reasonable price . It came with a Caspian Slide, Aftec extractors, Full length Tungsten guide rods, Bomar sights etc.etc. The only thing I added was the Brazos Microdot FO sight and shock buffs. At True Weight Standard division STI's with minimal customization cost 185,000 php so you can take it from there. Here's another, this time with the Glock 30

A hefty price for perfection:). But I can see that its worth it ,as you have attested that the buck stopped there regarding your annual purchases when you finally got that "baby". Truly a "holy grail" for handgunners.The Glock 30 is a nice piece too. Now its time for me to save up if I'm going to get me an STI 'cause I'm a long ways from getting there . Congrats Doc its even "picture perfect". |

Heard from Col. Po of FED that they would not issue PTT for long firearms; we're in that down-cycle again. It only means that PTTs for short firearms would follow soon( I hope not 'coz I can't afford PTCs). There are countless of checkpoints all over M.M.; how come no one responded to the scene of the crime( Cong. Lanot's) fast enough to apprehend the criminals? That way law-abiders would not suffer! For what are these checkpoints anyway?!
