Okay, here's another fun bug with the latest R3B01 Organizer firmware:
Run the Vijay Singh golf game and then let the screen saver kick in and eventually the screen will go blank by just leaving the phone alone. Now touch a key or hit the jog dial to get the screen back. From now on, the game is jerky and has inexplicable artifacts on the screen. What's worse, I have to reboot twice in order for the game to work properly once again. Simply quitting the game isn't enough. Gah!
I guess this is one way they force you to keep playing the game.

no worries guys- that's just life with a P990 I think. I've been trying for the last 5 hours too- same msg, just the one laptop and in Oregon, USA, but rest assured it is most likely a SEUS issue and not anything you/I are doing. Who knows, maybe they are uploading the first *final* fw this time instead of the beta versions...? One can only hope... |

Thanks for the replies - Ares, Spawn & Lau. Now I've been in the software/hardware biz for ages. We are aware of software bugs (who isn't), but:
1. "Why use digital zoom?" Well, it IS one of the features the phone brags about. If the phone is NOT capable of performing autofocus when taking pics using digital zoom, the "feature" shouldn't even be made available. Period. Why use digital zoom? Don't you ever want to take a simple pic of a skyline, etc, and want to zoom in as close as possible to fill the screen with what is your ideal shot? Sure - go get a camera to do that (I have the Minolta Dimage A1 & A2). And why should one need to use Photoshop to do this? Remember, we are NOT talking about macro mode shots. Picture quality there is pretty good. "Why use digital zoom"? It's not always you can get close to the subject you want to take the picture off. Duh!? And by the way, we're not talking about 'soft' autofocus pics when using the zoom. We're talking about completely screwed up to the max blur pics. If this "feature" was not supposed to work, how is it that 1 our of 15 times, autofocus DOES lock in to a crisp picture - no change in setting, position, subject or lighting? And by the way, we did have a go with the K800i phone at SE, and it's picture quality was lightyears from the P990i.
2. Our first Sony Ericsson T68i could record a conversation. But the $1,400 latest SE phone cannot??? Hmmmm.....
3. There are times when you want to send a picture, and then decide against it - that is why I hit the back button to either select the same pic or a different pic. The system crashes. No big deal. But the only way for the software to work again is to power-off the phone and re-start. I had reported the bug to SE, and it HAS been solved with the R7 firmware. However, SE acknowledged that the problem with autofocus not being able to function (at all) under zoom has still not been solved.
So, the only thing we can conclude is that there might be an entire batch of Sony P990i phones, perhaps released in ASIA, that has an autofocus problem.

@dineshrai42
I took 2 pics with 250% zoom and the second one was much better, but I think the problem was my hand was not that steady when I took the first pic.

The zoom isn't sharp for me either . when i half press the button to let it focus , its sharp for 0.01sec , then it focuses a bit further and the final shots are most of the time blurry .
then again , i still don't have access to the latest firmware . |

Hi CrimInalA,
That is EXACTLY what we are facing. The autofocus works for a fraction of a second with a clear shot, then blurs out.
SE Singapore said they will bring this issue up with SE.
They confirmed that the new R7 firmware DOES NOT solve this problem.
Is your firmware R5? I'm almost very certain that the older R4 firmware didn't have this problem - but I would love someone to confirmed it.
R7 did solve the picture send bug.
We need to know if there was a whole batch with a manufacturing defect. That's important. If it's software alone, I can wait... |

Can anyone say EXACTLY how to tell if your phone is the World vs Europe version?
I am getting the "your phone is up to date" hassle with a R1A14 organizer FW so I KNOW it is out of date. BUT my phone in the Hidden Locks menu all has the padlocks *unlocked* with nothing entered in the MNC2 or 3 fields for any of the categories, there is no branding, and no other sign of a lock.
My CDA is a XXXX/5 instead of a /1 or /2 like some, but the only post I have found commenting on the /X says that /55 are locked and others are not. Can not find out any meaning for a /5 like mine, maybe a partial lock?
So. What do I/we have??? Does anybody know how to tell?
thanks,
Dave |

that's why: SEUS athenticates the phone against a list of these CDAs, with each one having a latest allowed version.
yonks ago there was a nice list on here, but i think it was for p800's or p900's, not even the p910i. it listed all the specific types of CDA and their country / carrier.
get searching and you may find they're all largely the same.

Here's a sample of a picture taken with maximum zoom. The portrait on the wall was approximately 14 feet away. Zoom was set to maximum. Autofocus simply cannot lock on at maximum zoom. Maybe after 15 tries, it locked on correctly once.
This is absolutely not the kind of autofocus zoom quality you'd expect from a premium line flagship product. I just hope it is a firmware issue.
Phone settings:
Shoot Mode: Single Shot
Frame Size: Can be anything - 320, 640, 1280, 1600
AutoFocus: Normal
White Balance: Auto
Light: On or Off (same problem)
Effects: OFF
Quality: Can be anything (Fine, Normal & Economy)
Night Mode : ON or OFF (picture is much more noisy with it ON)
Save to: Memory stick pref
Auto Review: ON
Shutter SOund: Sound 1
SelfTimer: OFF

Hi dineshrai42, welcome to esato I had faced the exact same issue and had posted this over at our local SE community, SECentral Huh, thought I was alone facing this issue all these while... Here's what I had faced:
Using Zoom:
1. Auto focus fails 80% of the time. It became blurred when I tries to press lightly for the auto focus to adjust. Ended up gotta turn it off cos it is too unreliable...
2. Pics taken seems "dark"... I took pics in broad daylight, all settings are standard, no fiddling of the daylight, night mode, etc. But the resulting pic looks as if I took the pic during evening Sun set time, which looks much darker. Of course, it looks ok on the phone, but once transferred to PC, the pic is definitely much darker than during the time which I took the pic, e.g. noon time.
3. The Camera lens seems to loose focus in broad daylight. I took videos in the wide open, moving the camera on a 180 degree turn and back, the resulting video is 1/2 the time the colour is correct, i.e., daylight, but half the time, the colour suddenly changed to evening sunset colour, as if the video is taken under a tungsten lamp.
4. The noise reduction is too much???... e.g., I took a pic of someone in under bright sunlight. The person is wearing a sunshade cap. Pic taken ended up cannot see the face at all! Since the cap blocks the sunlight from shining at the person's face, the face obviously becomes darker, but the camera seems to completely ignore the dark shadow and completely wipes off the person's face. So end result, you see the hand, the clothes, the cap... BUT NO FACE!
