@Kryptik: I don't work at the Cape Times any more. It's now Media24.
@coola: A power outage makes the news cause it hardly ever happens... I can't recall the last time we were without power for two hours.
I'm not sure about the Asian populatio of SA but you can check out www.statsa.org.za for the exact numbers.

@Brix, you're a busy chap! Is it much different being at Media24 as compared to the Times?

@Coola, i remember reading that South Africa has the biggest Indian population outside of India... where i live the Indian segment of the population is very involved in business, education, and to a lesser extent local politrix. I spent a number of years teaching at a formerly-exclusive Indian school, where i not only made life-long friends but developed my taste for the hottest curries known to man

Brix your link is wrong, It's actually www.statssa.gov.za .
The power outage wasn't actually so long... I was working on the imac suddenly everything turned off [I thought it was just Grabouw] inexact 15mins later I heard my mac start-up again.

I heard(maybe old news) that MTN has now bought 44% in Mascom - MTN's going to buy them into the red light how their now going on.

@slssls: Thanks for the correct link. Down in Grabouw it might've been 15 minutes but in Slaapstad it was for a whole two hours...I work on the 16th floor and looking out of my office window I could see the chaos on the roads with traffic lights not working and the congestion because everyone decided to go home when they heard power would only be restored at 5pm.

@da krypsta: Yep, Media24 is much different than Independent Newspapers( Cape Times) but I'm still finding my feet here.

Mrs Amawanqa's father works at the Koeberg nuclear power station.
He had the night shift yesterday,so when he arrived at Koeberg,he had his hands pretty full...
One of the three attaching prongs on one of the two Koeberg reactor's refueling connectors/couplers didn't seat properly, which automatically caused the reactors' computer management to go into a 'failsafe' mode...cutting most of CT's power, over designated grids.

Back to phone stuff, you guys might have seen that the W800i was on a massive PAYG special this morning, and already sold out at Carphone Warehouse. Why?How's £169.99 (approx R2120) sound, when bought with £10 airtime?

@da wanqsta: Aren't they just clearing space for the imminent arrival of the W900i which is expected to be a best seller.

@ brix,
Possibly, but the W800i is still very much in demand, so I was quite surprised to see such a drop in price.
So then, perhaps the W900i will possibly hit the shelves sooner than expected..or at least before Christmas? Let's see what transpires within the next 6 weeks.
Having said that, it's not yet listed under Carphone Warehouse's 'Coming Soon' section...

Had to smile when i logged on. I have a very good friend who lives in Singapore who, a while ago, had been debating whether he should change from Java to Symbian. Well, he eventually bought a 3230, and to say that he's enraptured with Symbian would be an understatement

Thus far we've managed to install all the must-have apps on his phone, as well as some neat software that does all kinds of tricks.

What's notable is that since he's doing his compulsory military service he's had to get a Letter of Authorisation to have a camera-phone inside HQ. I wonder if the same situation applies to our military bases as well...

@da krypsta: A couple of months ago while I was on one of the SA Navy's new corvettes we were not allowed to take pics inside the bridge, especially the avionics because it's top secret.

Yeah, towards the end of my national service in 93,when I was a lieutenant at Army HQ in Pretoria,we were strictly forbidden to take any camera into the 6-storey underground 'Blenny' building or most parts of the other admin buildings.
Speaking of avionics, when doing manoeuvres in the newly-updated Puma helicopters back then, renamed Oryx's, we were also forbidden to take any snapshots inside the cockpit.

@erike: I've got one lying around but it's in a really bad state and the firmware is messed up to the point where it gets stuck if you're trying to access "Services". Tried getting a firmware update from Vodacare but they said "it's too old". Have you tried eBay?

The wife's cousin and her husband had a coupla T600's lying about a while ago, which they gave away when they bought newer models. She got an LG *duh* and he an iMate Jam which has now been exchanged for a dufus S40 Nokia by his even more dufus-brained company.

@bongzino: Damn, I thought I was the only one that liked the look of the T600...for me though it was just too tiny for my hands although it should be said I used another tiny phone (Alcatel 511) when the T600 was released.
Have you tried Cash Crusaders?
