That's why I say kids can only own "starterpacks" aka 3310 or any other phone without video or colour screen.

If only that was so,but kids, like MOST us,want to have as many specs as possible in a handset..
the 'brag factor' amongst their peers re phones only amplifies this, unfortunately. You know what kids are like.
The days many 'lighties' being content with a 3310 and playing a limited number of games like Snake have seemingly gone by,( a very general statement,I know...)and with the advent of phone prices dropping and features increasing,it's certainly not assisting the situation.
It is extremely concerning as to how the all-too-easily accessible smut and weird stuff XXX filth will affect young, impressionable minds.

On a serious note, networks can protect kids. Parents could send the mobile numbers of their kids to the network...all smut can thus be blocked from being accessed by certain numbers. I believe thissystem is already in place in the UK(wanqsta can confirm).

@ brix,
Yes,this does exist. There are numerous third party companies creating multimedia content filters for cellphones such as http://www.nds.com/mobile_solutions/mobile_drm_solutions.html
but I really don't know which of the UK networks have these types of content restrictions available on request.
To tell you the truth,I have never seen this advertised here by any network, but have heard that it is available.
I will try find out more tomorrow at the local Carphone Warehouse;I'd like to know for future reference...

Although this will protect kids to some extent, obtaining X-rated content via Bluetooth,I/R etc. from friends and older sibling's phones probably remains the biggest culprit/s of uncontrolled content distribution.

About the xxx stuff. Looking at the way technology has advanced. I doubt anyone can stop it. Networks will protect themselves by preventing minors from accesing it. There are also dvds, easily available on almost any street corner, and there is a computer, encoding softwares. One way or the other, it wont stopping minors from accesing porn. Technology is as much as helpful as it is dangerous.

imho the problem starts at home. Parents allowing kids to have a tv in their bedrooms is where it begins. As correctly stated, technology has made it ridiculously easy for anybody to access porn, and from my personal point of view if anybody's legally entitled to view porn, i have no qualms with them. It's when impressionable young minds start checking out downright nasty shit that scares me.

Happy First anniversary friends! Greetings from Nigeria. U Guys also hit 4,000 posts in one year... wow. Let's make it 10,000 by our 2nd anniversary.

On the issue of porn... what has the SA Telecom Regulator put in place to protect kids? I didn't see any restriction in MTN's wap site.

Hiya Coola At the moment nothing's in place yet, although there's hectic debate surrounding the issue. Imo it's going to be difficult to restrict sites per se, for the simple reason that finding ways around problems is a thing South Africans are rather good at, particularly the younger generation.

It's going to take an innovative solution to ease the minds of all concerned. Having said that, i should add that it's impossible, to all intents and purposes, to keep pornography from impressionable eyes and minds. The last thing we want, of course, is a Big Brother situation to develop either... Typical Catch-22 situation, i'm afraid.

On porn, hav u considerd a skul of thot wch believes tht most crimes r results of sudden release of "restrictd"emotions.Propagators of ths view argue tht e.g,ther were no cases of rape in pre-civilizd societies wher adults went about naked.

Hmm,what evidence do they base this on or is it just a theory?
A psycho-analysis of precivilized humanity done by them?
Wonder what Sigmund Freud and his 'basic instincts' theories would have said about the notion, not that I champion any specific or single theory on this aspect of human psyche;just further food for thought...

What about mobile pornography? Recently here there was a spate of pornographic mms moving around. A couple was filmed in an intimate moment by a guy with his phone and he went around sending the clip to all and sundry. Also, clips downloaded from the web are often send from one phone to the other via mms. So, its not only the pc but also the cell phone that can be a source of porn.

My folks would never have let me have a cell when I was a kid, but now it's the whole "if I need to contact you" factor.

Sheesh. Firefly released a cell for kids that can phone mom, dad or emergency numbers. There are no number or text buttons.

I really think that is a great idea. The numbers have to be entered by an adult using the up and down keys. There is no phone book. 3 numbers only. And a green and red button (obviously).

Now if the kid needs mom or dad (or vice versa), they can. No mess, no fuss.

Problem solved.

Well, thats my 5c worth. Hope no one was bored to tears.
