I think a codec is missing on the P990. Converted movies that used to work on my old P990 don't work on the replaced one. M3 converts fine and I can watch the converted movies with QuickTime on my PC.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD

Still having some problems playing video on my P990:
Built-in video player refuses to open files converted with M3.
Divx player plays divx files but since it is not symbian signed the screen turns itself off, so I prefer not to use it.
Smartmovie player plays divx files but the display is jumpy, no use. This program will also only play files with the avi extension, no luck with mp4 or 3GP.
Things used to work on my first P990, now I'm on my 3rd P990, all replaced by SE. Since then I also had to reformat my notebook.
The converted files play with Quicktime on my notebook but no luck on the P990, I just keep getting the message "there was a problem opening file, do you want to try again". I will do some more work on my notebook to see if I can get this to work, in the meantime, I would appreciate if anyone who has faced this problem and found a cure for it let me know what should be done.
I am experimenting with the various options of Allok Video to see if I can get any one of the converted movies to play on the P990.

try splitting the movie into 60 minutes segment, i once tried playing a converted movie without splitting and it won't play on my P990i but plays on my pc with quicktime, must be a caching issue with P990i in playing movies.

Yes, splitting into 60 min chunks worked. Checked the movies I had converted earlier and they were all 45 min episodes, that is why I didn't get this problem before. So far I know 411 MB mp4s can be played with the built-in player, I'll post when I know the upper limit.
This caching problem does not happen with smartmovie but it only plays avi files and the movies are jerky at best. Anyone know the settings that work on the P990 for avi files?

It should be great if this software will support multi-threading: I have a q6600, and during conversion only a core work

Try the P990i settings, and uprate the kbps for video.

Works a treat

i think its better to use W950 settings, because of screen size...P990 is bigger...

Hey, for all you that can't get M3 to work, try AVIDemux. I was having audio sync trouble with a whole series of AVIs I was trying to convert for my w810i. All these one click converters gave the same pregressively-more-out-of-sync result (M3 is especially fast and great for everything else). AVIDemux, like VirtualDub, is known for being able to open most file types and detect and compensate if they have variable bitrate audio or packed bitstreams, which I think causes most of the problems. It's a little harder to set up, i.e. you need to know exactly what settings will work with your phone, but once you figure it out the first time, you can have it save your settings. Plus, you can use it to edit many other types of video. Just Google it. It's open source, so easy to find. They also have a wiki docs section on their site, with tons of info.
