There is a massive amount of freeware available, far more than s60, and about a billion times more than UIQ.

Some of it's crap, but a large proportion is high quality freeware.

It's this factor which really seals the deal for me on WM and why I've never really considered SE UIQ, or even s60 (let alone the fact it doesn't have a touchscreen as yet)

The software is definitely available - http://na.blackberry.com/eng/[....]enabled/os.jsp#tab_tab_windows - the rest is just down to the networks.

Thanks Boinng... I had seen that its possible but there seems to be no concrete information on whether it will be on the X1... Hopefully SE will have it as a download on their site as they do with the UIQ phones... I see that Motorola have done so with the Q thing...

They say its network dependant but it seems to be like that in the US whereas in the UK it seems to be more down to the manufacturer... I suppose I could summise that its Network and Manufacturer dependant so as long as the handset is approved that bit is taken care of...

My only worry is the fact that SE may not see it as relevant due to WM and Exchange etc as well as the fact that Nokia have stopped supporting it on their devices such as the E71!

Realistic concerns? well I see this as a realistic concern

as for camera quality
It will be the same crap as all camera phones, The key element in any camera is the lens and most camera phones lens's are dog pooh if you want a camera buy a camera not a phone!

I'm not saying your concern itself isn't serious, just that the likelyhood that the X1 won't support HWR is EXTREMELY LOW, and for now, until anyone says any different, you should consider that it does support HWR and double check when it comes out before buying it to be sure. You can then concentrate on finding answers to questions that are more unclear.

Look, the fact is EVERY SINGLE WM PHONE to-date supports HWR, so you simply can't rely on the fact some dodgy marketing website didn't mention HWR as evidence that X1 may not support HWR (when every other WM phone does).

Of course it will support HWR. you can gloat on the "I'm not as smart as a 5th grader" thread if I'm wrong

btw, about camera lenses, I agree partially however you can't really separate lenses and sensors. If either is poor the other makes little difference.

Hi Max-wedge,
I agree with you on the sensors V lens's in proper camera's (I recommend the Pentax K10 "little bit of bragging there" sorry: smile: ), but with the small size and poor quality of the lens in mobile phones it really doesn't make quite so much difference in a mobile phone.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.

Aaaaaaah! Shut up! She sounds like a computer voice.

HA HA HA it is a computer voice!... you are like friend who argues with the lady voice in his GPS turn by turn. lol

Haha, I can imagine myself arguing with a GPS voice. That sounds a lot like me.

I am glad its not just me that argues with the b***dy things, my TomTom was trying to take me a route I knew was wrong the other day (I only had it on to keep me alert to any new speed camera's sorry SAFETY camera's SIC)

I wrote to TomTom yesterday, to see if I could remove my TT sw from my P1 and transfer my TT licence to an X1 if I buy it, and this was the response I got from TomTom this morning:

"I am just asking you to verify if you are using Navigator 6?(Which I do) If this is the case, then unfortunately the Sony Ericsson Experia X1 is not supported and therefore will not work.

With Best Regards

Lindsay R.

The TomTom Customer Support Team"

So what to do now? maybe it will be supported in the future who knows, or perhaps TomTom are going to bring out a newer version?

But either way as far as I know TomTom does not support internal GPS units so I would still have to use my superb Holux M1200 unit as well, (the M1200 has great battery life, and is so tiny you never really have to think about it either round your neck or in your pocket and works brilliantly with my P1 but for some reason not my W960 maybe it can only be paired with one device at a time who knows!)

The Google stuff is fine for round town on foot, but not in the same league as TomTom and its traffic and Speed Camera plugins when using it in a vehicle. Does anyone know yet if the Wayfinder system will work on the X1 using it's internal GPS ?

@ Nitro-fan - Navigator 6 is available for WM6.1 and works perfectly on Windows Mobile, and by extension the X1 - and yes, it will support an internal GPS (or aGPS) too. Some recent HTC handsets have even come with Navigator 7 installed, and in fact both TT6 and TT7 have been widely "ripped" from the devices and shared across the web through sites like XDA Developers (there is a ongoing philosophical debate over whether this counts as "warez" if the maps themselves, which is the bit you pay for, aren't included - certainly TomTom have made no effort to stop the software being distributed on its own).

The difficulty for you (from memory) is that your own TT6 maps will be registered to a device code unique to your P1 - so although you can easily install the TT6 software on your X1, you'll need to persuade TomTom to give you a new registration code to use your maps on the X1.

Of course, there are other approaches. The maps are the key to all this, not the software itself.

What kind of goodies do you think Sony Ericsson is going to add to the X1 package?

From the webcast, I heard something about a full length movie? maybe an 8GB MicroSDHC? or is that just wishful thinking?

i rang o2 last week. the bloke said x1 is out on contract o2 uk mid oct. can anyone confirm ?

I rang up today as I'm due an upgrade this month. The lady on the other end just told me that they were awaiting confirmation from....somebody, they didn't give me a date. Considering O2 germany have already confirmed, I think its only a matter of time for the UK.

It seems that most operators and providers don't know what they are on about! Everyone seems to be getting told different things.

Carphone Warehouse told me that they are expecting stock at the end of this month, or first week of October. Then, when I called them earlier they said they aren't even sure they will be getting it (despite it being shown on their coming soon section).

Phones4U don't seem to have any information (again, despite it being shown on their coming soon page).

O2 (UK) told me last week they were expecting it the first week of October, and now when I just called they have said it's been delayed and won't be available until next year!

So far, the only operator that seem to be giving out the same info is Vodafone, who still claim it should be available from 5th October. Sod's law that it's the operator that brand their phone to hell, and the one that I can't get a signal with in my house lol.

What a nightmare! lol

I just want to ask you something - does X1 has :
two media players - Media Manager and WMP Mobile;
two browsers - Opera and IE;
two contact books - In the Media Manager and in the OS?

The best mobile phone brand died with Sony Ericsson's death. Shame on you Sony for killing it! And, of course, for ruining the Xperia brand...

It's quite strange that contacts are in the media manager. It would be better if they turned it into a full file browser with documents, notes and all other files because its finger friendly.

Question about WM third-party contact managers. Do they all use the same database of contacts or do they each create their own database?

Excuse my ignorance, but in the first picture, what is that phone in the upper left? It looks like a completely smooth face with a flush screen.

Has anyone tried ordering screen protectors for the X1. I order some last week and some at the beginning of this week and both my orders were refunded because they didnt have anymore in stock saying the demand was too high. They did ask me the exact dim of the screen and they would custom cut it for me but i didnt know the exact dims were so they refunded my loot.

I thought I was doing good by ordering last week but apparently not. Does anyone else have any idea where I should try. All the ones on Ebay, even though they are listed they dont have them in stock, I already tried there. Ive also checked DuraSec but imma hold off on them for the moment they want US $16 bucks...Thanks guys
