can you post crops rather than resized pics? Cant really judge an image once its resized. If its not too much of an issue could you take a pic of a tree and post a 100% crop of any portion of it?
Regarding the touch screen "hardness", @max, Boinng is right, all WM phones are resistive and will have a bit of "softness" to the screen. @Boinng, the TyTn II(at least mine) is harder than my old M600i, but there still is softness to the screen, if you hold it at an angle and slowly touch the screen you can see it depress. My RoKR E6 was harder than the TyTn II but more bouncy. THe TyTn II feels likes the LCD is just below the digitizer, early in the life of the TyTn II there were quite a few broken LCD, this is quite a good indication that the LCD was closer to the digitizer than some other touch screens, this also would make the touch screen feel harder. The X1 should be similar.

I'm wondering if business card scanner will be included in the retail version because there's no sign of it so far on SE websites. It strikes me as odd since the X1 is a business-oriented device and a business card scanner would be very useful. Hell, they should've included a full on text scanner if you ask me since it applies the same technology which was already made available in P990 back in 2005.

I think is holding back on some of the software that "should" be included in order to entice people to use the panel download service. In all of these latter day demos, they really don't have much to show in the way of panel variety.
I'm hoping a lot of the "missing" stuff will be available as panels (of course there's always the regular WM apps too). |

Hi, anyone know which version of co-pilot gps software will work with the X1? I've read that co-pilot live 7 doesn't support agps but Bengalboy had a video somewhere with copilot on the x1 working fine. Thanks in advance |

My initial impression was the guy who started this debate had a problem with damaging his LCD via pressure applied to the screen in use, not with scratching per se. But if he is scratching the screen in normal use (ie: not from keys etc, but through pressing it with finger or stylus), I am completely astonished, since it would seem to me extremely hard to scratch a touchscreen with a finger nail or stylus. If he is using a ballpoint pen on the screen well that is just laziness and you can't hold it against the phone if that's the case.
I really don't think scratching will be a problem with the X1, just as I've not yet found it to be a problem with any other touchscreen I've used regularly. But as you pointed out, screen protectors are available so anyone with concerns should just buy a screen protector. They are cheap enough.
As someone who has been using PPC's since since almost the dawn of time I can't agree with that! The coating on resistive TS's these days are hard like you say but not hard enough not to get scratched! Using a stylus or indeed fingertip on a perfectly clean screen doesn't get it scratched. The problem lies when you are using a stylus on a screen that is not PERFECTLY clean, i.e., if there are bits of dust, lint etc. All it takes is awkward contact and enough pressure between stylus and foreign object and presto, you have a hairline scratch!
It's happened to me too many times with too many devices. Though to be fair, I tend to use a stylus alot. If you tend to you mostly fingers then chances are without a protector it is unlikely you will scratch the screen. |

I've been using ppc's for a long time also. I've owned 4 PPC/WM phones, used extensively, as well as had ppc's for a previous job that I used as pda's and for testing the companies ppc software (before ppc phones were even dreamed of). I also setup WM phones for my business customer's regularly.
(Early non-phone PPC's had much softer screens than modern PPC phones in my memory.)
In my experience SE smartphones have softer screens than most of the WM devices I've used, so I thought it reasonable to allay the fear of people who ask if X1 will have a screen as soft as the P1. So far two people, including aksd who I trust implicitly, have stated an SE UIQ devices that has a softer screen than common variety WM devices.
I never said the screen can't be scratched, even a glass screen can be scratched (all it takes is a grit of sand in your pocket rubbed the wrong way - sand is mostly quartz, which is harder than glass).
When I say "it's not likely to be a problem for the X1" I mean that the X1 is likely to have a screen that is, as resistive screens go, harder than SE UIQ screens. It may not be as hard as a ipod touch and not likely to have a glass upper layer, but there is still a good chance it will be harder than the P1 which is what started this whole debate.
I've always been impressed with modern WM screens (compared to my previous experience with PPC) and find it odd that people have problems scratching them. But then maybe that's just because I'm quite careful, including keeping my ppc phones in cases and wiping the screen before use if it's dirty. If a person wants to just drop their ppc phone straight in their pocket then they need to use a screen protector, and if they had an ipod touch that lived in their pockets I'd suggest the same thing.
Infact I've even say the same thing about non-smartphones with tough polycarbonate screens.

max_wedge, not familiar with P1's screen as the last SE UIQ TS screen I used was the P990. Though, I will agree earlier PPC devices like my Cassiopeia where alot more scratch prone than say my Wizard but it doesn't change the fact that it still is far too easy to scratch TS screens with a stylus and a stray bit of debris. Heck, my Touch Pro even came with a screen protector!
I've never been a big fan of screen protectors as to me they spoil the clean look and I too am quite anal about the cosmetic condition about my gear and always treat anything with kiddy gloves. That, however, hasn't changed the fact that practically every PPC device I've owned since about 1998 developed a screen scratch through stylus use. Thats why since the Wizard I always put a protector now on all devices to stop scratches. Though my brother has an unprotected Kaiser and the screen is slightly scratched!
Also, I'm not too sure about earlier PPC's being more scratch prone than newer devices. As I remember a HP Jornada I had that never got a single scratch, though at the same time I remember one of Sony's flip palm devices being atrocious! So i guess it depends what coat a manufacturer wants to use for the final TS layer.
iPhones on the other hand, those are a different beast, even if you were to run a stylus over them for the sake of it on an unclean screen, I very doubt you would see a scratch...tough as nuts! |

Even just wiping the screen can damage it if the wrong bit of dirt gets between your cloth and the surface. We can quibble about the relative quality of the surface previously used by SE in their UIQ smartphones, and that found on most WM phones, but (a) that "softness" is still inherent to some degree in any resistive screen, whoever makes it, and (b) it's worth remembering that WM is not a phone manufacturer, and drawing comparisons between previous SE phones and all WM devices as a whole is a bit meaningless. The quality of the X1's screen surface will come down to the quality of whatever part(s) SE have specified for its manufacture at the end of the day, not whether the phone runs UIQ or WM.
I still believe that the original question - will the X1 have a soft screen like the P1 or a hard screen like the Ipod Touch - has only one very clear answer. The screen will be a plastic-covered resistive screen similar to that used on the P1 - perhaps it will be a slightly higher quality, slightly more scratch resistant surface, but it won't be as hard as the glass screen of the Ipod Touch, and it won't be fundamentally different to that screen on the P1. The hard glass capacitive screen of the Ipod is a different technology with very different physical properties - it's simply not the same as the screen on any WM phone.
We've collectively laboured all these points far too much, and this is my final say on the matter; no doubt someone will be along in a moment to prove how all this adds up to the X1 having the hardest screen on planet earth, at which point I just give up...

I know wm isn't a device manufacturer, it's just a generalisation. I'm not claiming it true for all. I have learnt something in this debate too ie: that some WM screens are softer than others.
All my WM phones are HTC, and even in that segment some are softer than others. However I am really keen to have another look at the P1 because my impression was that it is quite a bit softer than the WM devices I've mentioned.
If the X1 screen is the same as my ipaq or samsung, then I would say it will be quite scratch resistant and I wouldn't be too concerned. If it's as soft as I remember the P1, then it may be more of a concern.
However it don't expect for a second that it will be as hard as the ipod touch, I only ever claimed I thought it likely to be harder than the P1.

Dare I suggest, just wait and see what kind of b****y screen it comes with?
To be frank I am more interested in what networks will be selling the thing (I am NOT shelling out hundreds of pounds on any more SIM free kit it is not worth it)
So far it seems Vodafraud are the ONLY confirmed takers in the UK clearly have promised them of no more P990 b***s up's (I am not convinced) according to the people I have spoken to this morning T-Mobile have no plans to take it and I like my Flex Plan! None of the other networks I spoke to today had ever heard of the thing!

Found this page today sorry if it's already been posted!

Looks very much as though the only way to enter data without the key board is the "on screen" keyboard. I like to write with a stylus and thought that would be available as per my P1 but no mention of it here at all and it would be a deal breaker for me.
Oh and by the way the X1 apparently can make phone calls, its the LAST feature shown!!!!!!!!!
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot. |
