it has been in numerous news articles in the business sections of the papers that the reason why NTT DoCoMo is investing in PLDT is so that it can license i-mode to SMART.

it's exactly the same reason why docomo invested in several european carriers: to get wider distribution and adoption of i-mode in the various 3G networks.

so at the very least, it is good news since we get to see what all the hype in japan is about.

@kabukijep

Pero I don't think 3G will be successful. Mahal masyado.

been using smart 3G on free trial today.

for speed comparison, i opened a webpage on my pc that had 55 images. pc is on 768kbps dsl connection. the pc took 17 sec to open the page. using 3G with opera browser, the same page took 1:35.

i also downloaded a 4.5mb file from the web. it took just under 13 min on 3G.

i'd say 3G feels like a 128kbps dsl connection. not bad for a mobile, especially since it's currently free!!!

Hi, I was kinda going through this forum and was wondering if the 3g trial you mentioned is from smart. You also mentioned that you are using a w900. I was disappointed earlier today when I called smart and was told that they do not support the w900 yet. Can you be kind enough to explain how I can setup 3G on my w900 on smart.

Thank you so much.

yup i am using a W900 on smart. of course their network supports it. it even says so in their print ads.

anyway, i went to the wireless center because i was going to ask for the 3G SIM card. but apparently for the trial period, you just use your regular SIM. and you don't even have to change any data settings.

therefore, for your W900 or any other supported 3G handsets, as long as your phone indicates that it is detecting the 3G signal, just surf or video call to your heart's content and enjoy 3G while it's still free!

a word of warning tho: make sure that the 3G signal is present before you go online. if it's not, and you are connected via GPRS or EDGE, you will be billed for your data usage. but as long as 3G is present, it's free!!!

i was wondering why i can't use videocall. i was in pasig earlier using my k600i with a regular sim card. it detected the 3G signal by showing the 3G icon but i cannot connect with another 3G phone. i called up customer support and they said that i need to go to a wireless center and use THEIR 3G sim card to be able to try the video call.
