Anyone tried to do an update from the phone through the software update menu?

Many have traied and failed. This particular update simply does not seem to be suitable to be done through OTA.

Can anyone confirm that the screen is limited to 65K colors? Or is this inaccurate?

Android 1.6 is limited to 65K colors. Sony Ericsson said a while ago the screen hardware is capable of 16 million colors (sametime it said the screen can do multi-touch as well, we all know how that turned out). I wouldn't count on anything until Sony Ericsson updates the firmware to Android 2.0+. At that point, it can be determined if the screen can do 65K colors.

Only a few hours after receiving that tweet, I received the following reply to my email query:

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.

In regards to your first question, the Xperia™ X10, X10 mini, X10 mini pro all support 16M colors, hardware wise. Software wise there are limitations from the OS and what the future upgrades will imply on leveraging screen capability is not visible to me at this point. And yes the screen on the X10 is made of mineral glass.

You can view the Xperia™X10 specifications by logging on to: http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]overview/xperiax10?cc=ca&lc=en

As my initial tweet to SonyEricssonNA didn't specify that I know Android 1.6 is color limited, it's possible that the Twitter responder missed that I was asking specifically about the hardware capabilities. As such, I'm inclined to believe the email moreso than the tweet.

Let me clarifiy this. Multi-touch was believed to have been possible due to the following response by a SE Product Manager.

* Will it have multi-touch in future updates?

Xperia X10 has a capacitive screen. It does not support multi-touch functionality at launch, but is considered for the future.

http://blogs.sonyericsson.com[....]ers-to-some-of-your-questions/

The language used here inferred that it was not a hardware limitation at the time. As well all know now, its is a hardware limitation and therefore impossible.

Also, the color support question:

The 16.7 million color support is also "hearsay" until someone close to the development of the X10 states otherwise. A SE developer support rep posted in this thread that the TFT screen on the X10 only supports 18 bits of color (262,144 colors) and then infers that Android 1.6 further limits that to 65,536 (16 bit) colors.

I don't want to derail this thread again, because these are non-issues for those willing to look past them or already have the phone. My advice, don't buy the phone based on what SE says "could" happen in the future. By the phone on what it has now and you'll be a happy camper.

Just to note: Best Buy Canada has posted their listing for the Xperia X10 through Rogers Wireless, and (as the rumors suggested) it will indeed be selling for $549.99 non-contract.

New! Rogers Sony Ericsson Experia X10 Smartphone - Black

Hopefully, that'll help push the prices down for the rest of the world (or maybe not). Should be available in stores on April 15th if they're running on the same schedule as Rogers Plus stores.

I don't think this phone is worth bothering with until the update comes out.
