I added 3 photos, 1 using the old firmware from last week, and 2 from this week, I didn't take any 20mp last week unfortunately, so can't do a direct comparison.

they are named new and old firmware. I feel there is some difference, but minor for these 3 photos.

Yeah, it was just a rumor, but after S3 there is no way I will ever consider a samsung device ever. Theres also one feature that I keep forgetting is RAW support. Saw the topic from neogaf that Nokia is adding RAW support reminded me that.

I wonder how long it will take to record a 41Mpix image in RAW using that S4 cpu.. A Snap 800 would've been a much better match for the 1020.

My guess would be around 6-7 seconds.

The Z1 shouldn't have a problem with 20Mpix + Snap 800

yeah, I think now it takes 3-4 seconds to save jpeg @ 40 MP for the lumia, so even longer for RAW? Z1 should be a no problem maybe only you are saving into a slow SD card.

It takes that long because they are saving two images at once.. one oversampled 5mpix and the 41mpix. If you switch to 5Mpix (which still requires more processing than just any other 5mpix photo) it speeds up.

They will be using DNG for RAW which will results in files size of around 40mb. I am hoping that they would give a choice of just saving that, without the 5Mpix thing, because considering how slow the shot to shot time on the 1020 is right now, this would slow it down even further.

Despite that, writing 40 mb to memory will take some time.. my guess would be 7-8 seconds, which is fine.. I mean if you are shooting RAW you are probably set up and have the time. It just won't be ideal for quick snaps.

So Sony could do something similar.. they are already oversampling ala pureview, they might as well follow the trend this time around as well.

A recent post by zomg. The first part is in response to my mini preview of the Z1 at a Sony Store and it still having the poorer panels.

Hmm, that's odd. My source is very sure that the C6906 version is built separately and wouldn't get any of the older panels. It could be that the demonstration model is a C6903 with C6906 software overlaid to get them into stores faster.

On a different note. I just had a preview of 4.3.1 for the Z1! It's very, very smooth and it brings some nice UI touches. It also comes with another camera software update, the compression ratio right now from RAW -> JPEG is around 80%, this will be lowered to around 60% which will mean fewer compression artifacts and a generally smoother appearance, especially at ISO50-400, the downside is that it doubles the size of the JPEGs. Eventually they want to have selectable quality like you get in proper camera, normal, fine, super fine which should be 80%, 60% and 50% compression. No word on RAW output, but after Nokia's move my source said Sony are looking at adding it for the Z1, Z, ZL and ZR. Finally, they are also looking to add an aperture priority mode with selectable aperture and exposure values, that would only be for the Z1 though. The source said by the end of January, the Z1 will be better than most digital compacts, and better than pretty much every other Android phone, and it should be competitive with the 1020, though the 808 is still out of reach.

Also, got some news for next year's flagship camera module, it retains the 20MP, f2.0 but the sensor size may increase from 1/2.3" to 1/2.0" (30% increase in area) but it is very early in development so they may stick with an updated version of the 1/2.3" sensor with better light gathering characteristics (a full silicon respin of the current sensor, essentially).

if that is true then already a win. But I do have some doubt on C6906 having all high quality panels, it loose contrast looking at it in and angle, its not really as big of a deal most ppl make it out. Better than having the screen completely unreadable under natural light....

OH.. very nice Dacha..

that is why it is important to have phones be waterproof. *nod nod*

So, I got my magnetic charger today. Not sure if anybody noticed before but I posted a link to one that I purchased from a HK retailer through Amazon.com. Final price was $36 shipped from HK to the USA. My concern was that it wouldn't be the official Sony DK31, but it turns out it is. The only thing is that it did NOT come in retail packaging, but for the price, I don't really care.

I wasn't aware that you cannot plug the magnetic charger into a computer USB port and had to look at the user manual online to find that out. Here are some pics for those who are interested. So far, it works great and I really like the smart connect feature to automatically do things when it is docked.

The ONLY thing that's missing is for the screen to stay ON while charging. I'm not sure why that setting isn't in the Z1 as it was on my XS :/ If anyone can figure that out, let me know.

ALSO.. for anybody who's interested, I picked up this pocket sized tripod called an Ultrapod. It folds up and stows away in a pocket or a small bag very easily. It has a velcro strap allowing you to attach it to a branch or railing or similar, and a ball joint, which is great. In addition, I got this tripod mount, which is a spring loaded and pretty much squeezes the rubberized areas together to hold a phone in place. It's made for a lot of different models but it works fine for Z1. If anybody's interested, I'll post the links. I purchased them both on amazon for less than $20 total.

@gitaroo - indeed.

These are my personal WANTS for Z1 camera features. Hope they come in an update in the near future (with 4.3 hopefully!) Obviously, improved image quality and processing is a given.

- shutter speed control
- aperture control
- high resolution sweet panorama
- 3D panorama
- ISO control up to 3200 in 20mp mode
- White balance tweaking (e.g., choose a preset then be able to refine it further +/-, or even custom white balance using a sample photo)
- 4K video recording (great to have but not really needed)
- more "gimmicky" yet fun features, like the AR feature, which is gimmicky at best but fun to use.

My analysis is this.

For the shutter speed control, it is possible. But yes, for the aperture control, it needs some hardware tweak to make it happen, but Sony can do some minimal aperture controls, maybe from f/2.0 to f/9 or f/11, if possible.

For panorama, Sony should perfect their Sweep Panorama, and as well include the Photosphere software as a camera add-on.

ISO. I think I read something that ISO for Z1 is up to 6400. I just can't remember where I did see it.

That white balance tweaking, yes! Just like on some DSLRs where there is a reference photo for adjustment.

I think what we also need to have is a HDR-toggle for photo and video.

Well, on charging, it is fast when it is lower than 63% of the charging and gets slower until it reaches hundred.

Just like on discharging, it is fast when it is higher than 37% of the battery and gets slower until it reaches 0%
