Have Sony Ericsson finally taken the lead in global mobile phone solutions? |

Many people do not want extra functionality in their phones, even if it does not cost more. They presume that it will cost something somewhere. So they might prefer the T100 at €100 than the K500 an €105. |

and they are usually right. Most usefulness of smartphones includes internet which still incurs a hefty fee (unless you are in India with an edge phone - dirt cheap there, ask whizzkid)
I hammered away at my gprs internet for about two hours last night. My download session was about 1MB overall, which at 2 cents per kilobyte, is just over $20! (I'm not on a data plan, so pay the voice plan data rate.)
Capped plans for data are $9.95 for 2MB, $50 for 500MB (above that is classified "excessive use"!). I'm talking about 48Kbps gprs not EDGE!
We got it shit here in Australia. It's why I haven't even bothered with a smartphone yet. |

I agree with your statment. My point is more of high-end buyers would be more discerning when making a choice (since they hv to pay more money for phone) - i.e. "value-for-money" factor.

Actually I do think smartphones are taking off, which you can see from my previous posts in this thread. |

great. at least we agreed on something.

I do not think, however, that increased smartphones sales are necessarily to do with an uptake in interest in smartphone features though. |

i'm partial on this as well. My main stance is the "more is better" or "bigger is better" syndrome that buyers have. I think I read an article that says phone with bigger screen / better camera / memory slot are getting very popular. Coincidentally smartphone fits these attributes.

SE are rumoured to have two new smartphones coming out this year, which you can read about here. |

maybe when the time comes we can hv a "SE smartphone technology" debate.

Well, my analysis, the poor showing of SE smartphones, and the lack of network support of many models, are the two leading issues that are detracting from the claim that SE are a global leader in mobile phone solutions.
I think if you live in many parts of Europe, you would have a much better slant on the title of this thread than if you lived in say India (cheap edge support).
So I'm prepared to admit that the phones from SE in the next year could make or break SE in terms of the discussion topic.
However I still can't see any phones from other oems I'd buy over the P910 or K700i/S700i. If I lived in a country with cheap edge, I'd have to use a Z500 (6mb memory, vga cam video, no radio) or S710 (both edge, triple band, z500=850Mhz S710=850Mhz) but only for GSM 850MHz, or the Z1010 or V800 for a country with umts. Apart from the Z500, all those phones are pretty nice handsets. There are probably a nokia or two in the edge range of handsets more attractive an option than the Z500 though, that is a bit disappointing.

What do you mean SE were never in lead?? For gods sake, SE is only a four year old brand!

saying SE has taken the lead is way too premature. It is more of whether SE can even keep up and not get left behind.
I wont be supprise if N90/N70 are released before K750/W800.
And by the time K750/W800 comes on to the market, Nokia may have announced next gen of super phones.

For a new company like SE, its achievements in a short span of time is really commendable. Give them some time folks. Bringing out a new phone like every week isn't possible for a smallish company like SE. Also, i don't think market share will be much of a concern for the head honchos at SE. They're looking to consolidate. Market share can follow suit.

What I meant was for SE to continue to keep its position at the last few positions in the ranking. |
