Its the only way to sell phones these days.. you need to pack in the best possible specs, otherwise you don't stand a chance. Personally, I blame android for all of this nonsense.
After watching this very informative talk which touched on the issue
a little bit after the 9min mark
http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/2-535
It looks like you go past the point of diminishing returns past 300ppi. Anything bellow that could hamper readability/contrast, but overall.. there is only so much you can do.
I went to the store and looked at some 4K TV, Sony in particular, and it makes perfect sense on those big screens.. I haven't done the math but a 50 inch screen at 4K is probably around the 300 mark and it looks nice and smooth. I always felt that 1080p still looked kind of shitty to be honest.
By the way, 4K is precisely 8.3Mpix .. the exact 3840x2160 resolution in which the 808 records 8Mpix photos, so when you project one of those on a 4k TV is exactly 1:1 ratio
But at 4-5 inches .. I am not sure if we even needed to go over 720p to be honest, and especially not over 1080p, but we will anyway because of what I said earlier..
top specs = sales
bless Apple for bringing some sanity into all of this.
Very good post! That is the message I was trying to convey for some time, but most people here believe that more always means better, no matter what, and Android OEMs are forced to follow that mentality as well |

Sony shipped 250,000 smartwatches in 2013 & has a 7% share in the smartwatch market!

I know this isn't mobile related, but it does mention 11mm mobile sensor. I wonder what the chances of this tech hitting the Z4? |

I would bet on Z5 ! It's not easy to commence production of these Completely new sensors so early.
But whatever could be the case, photography is gonna seriously improve in Future!
Sony just rocks at Innovating!!! |

They've curved the sensor the capture more light at the corners ? That's awesome.
An 11mm diagonal will give is a sensor very similar to the one used in the 1020, which is 8mm X 6mm
The 808's has one with 15mm diagonal |

That's not how sensor measurements work.
An 11mm sensor is 2/3"....its weird that way. |

It's a concept show off
That sensor isn't coming to Z5 or even Z6 or Z7.
There will be sensors based on same design for smartphones in future but not before 2-3 years. ( Around 1/2.5")

Such a long time in future is nothing to predict abt! I'm pretty sure no leaker or source has even the slightest hint of what's gonna be in z5, forget abt further iterations!
You never know when and what technology commercializes, and Sony IS actually planning to roll on this tech in commercial field as they already stated!
And no, this isn't a concept technology! Sony has already made 100 fully working sensors based on it!

@AbhiD999
As said earlier, wait and see yourself.
Sometimes you need to be practical and not imagine anything that pleases your personal wish
And by "IT" I referred to the mobile sensor not the full frame one. Full Frame concept will go into mass production in a year or less( not confirmed, only a SR2 category rumor at SonyAlphaRumors), but not the mobile sensors.

Also is it known if it's going to be completely different from the OmniBalance one or not? Doubt that any credible info about this exists yet, but still.. |

To be honest, I dont look forward in seeing that curve sensor in Sony phone. Sony cant even take advantage of Z2's sensor. |

Of course it makes sense to expect no advancement at all in Sonys methods or performance. |

That makes no sense.
Even if Sony's software remains shite, sensor-level improvements are always welcome.
Fact is, a curved sensor will mean that fewer lens elements will be required to correct aberrations and vignetting, and images will be pin-sharp corner to corner, which is what you want in a mobile phone camera.

You're saying this with absolute confidence? Or is this just an educated guess based on previous events?
