Thanks... The joys of the japanese market.
I also saw android gurus on xda saying that when permanently locked, you need to wait for an exploit to be discovered, but with sony it is unlikely be ause securit is tight. Unfortunately there do not seem to be a lot of japanese developers invlved in xda so the japanese handsets may not get much attention.
But maybe AU handsets are different??
That I can ask Sony, not sure if Z1 really comes to AU...
Also quick question to you guys who may do these kind of things.
If i do not want to install a custom rom, and simply would like to sandbox some applications so it does not access my contacts, uninstall the docomo bloatware, and his kind of things, do i need bootloader unlock or root access is enough?
Can i get root access without unlocking bootloader?

For all I know, you can approach Docomo for software unlock only. Bootloader unlock requires an exploit. Some good news is that Z1 will go to AU as well with model number SOL23 and SO-01F for Docomo. There seems to be some official Sony announcement around 14 Sept for the Japanese version of Z1. It will be the domestic version so people living in Greater Tokyo should go down to Ginza to try it out. Fingers crossed for a End Sept release.

@Shotokan: Root access is possible without unlocking bootloader. However, it is better that your phone is rooted to unlock the bootloader. If you want to uninstall docomo bloatware and edit certain software, root access is all that is required. Unlocking bootloader means you want to flash an entirely new firmware/ROM. I'll stick with the Docomo software first. If it lags too much and hinders the phone's capabilities, I will try to find ways to root and uninstall it.

SONY - XPERIA Z1 C6902 HSPA+ is up for preorder at PC Nation an authorized Sony retailer.
The price is $ 704. That is a lot considering that I got my ZL LTE from them on day one for $570 which was way below the $ 759 MSRP.
It looks like Z1 LTE will be around $ 799 in the US. That is a premium price. |

Interview with the Z1 creators...
Here's the full speech..
"I caught up with Xperia Z1 design lead, Keita Hibi, to talk strategy / creativity / inspiration and more – enjoy.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself – who you are, where you’ve been and where you’re going…
I’m Keita Hibi. I’m a senior designer at Sony Mobile, based in Tokyo – I’ve been working for Sony for around 14 years, having joined Sony Ericsson three years ago. My thing is hardware design; previously I worked on WALKMAN, Cyber-shot and Alpha NEX… I was also responsible for Xperia S (notably, the acclaimed transparent element), Xperia Z and now Xperia Z1.
I want to see where OmniBalance can go, with products free from restrictions. “Usability” is just accepted, but why settle for it? I’m keen to explore concepts that bypass that notion – things that just “work” and “happen”.
What is inspiration?
Every day life – I find inspiration in simple things rather than extravagance. Beauty isn’t complicated and it’s usually not too hard to find.
Can you tell us a bit about the design philosophy behind Xperia Z1?
Xperia Z1 is based on our signature OmniBalance design, but in many ways it was about refining our original vision. We felt we reached design perfection with Xperia Z, but wanted to take things further – looking at body construction; making it more robust, easier to hold – we wanted to stretch our capabilities.
Both concept and finished product are based on consistency. The principles are simple but also unique – it’s about blending effortlessly into any environment or situation, and providing a consistent viewing experience from any angle. We had to find a balance between accomplishing this, but retaining a sense of identity.
However, there’s more to design that compelling visuals. During the creative process, I actually spent a lot of time holding the device with my eyes closed. I found this was the most effective way to heighten my senses, emphasize the sensation and appreciate comfort (it was almost like holding a soap). So, the corners are unobtrusive and smooth and the power button has a firm sensation when touched, but becomes subtle when not in use.
We worked really closely with our engineering team, right from very early planning stages – pushing each other and working hard to achieve our common goal.
What were the biggest challenges in conceptualising Xperia Z1 – creating something beautiful, and fully waterproof – without compromising on functionality?
We faced a few challenges in creating the solid aluminium frame, because it’s so integral to the product. Not just expressive, it’s functional as Xperia Z1′s antenna too.
We used a double-anodizing process, achieving a cut finish and a two-tone metal effect – it’s our commitment to absolute craftsmanship with premium materials.
Do you have a design hero?
We have many talented designers in Sony and I learn a lot from them – they’re my heroes. Alongside that, I focus on my abilities and what I’m able to do.
Do you have any tips for aspiring designers?
Believe in yourself regardless of what those around you say – take criticism constructively, but not to heart.
And, have full confidence in your identity and principles!
Thanks to Keita for his time." |

Yowsah.. i got excited at the $704 price until i noticed it was only for the HSPA+ version. I guess i'll be waiting a bit longer for other authorized retailers to pick it up. competition will bring the price down. PC Nation is probably thinking the same thing and not wanting to put up a price until some of the bigger retailers put up one first. then they can undercut them by a few bucks.

Doesn't that mean you'll be getting the L39h model instead of the C6906 global model?

Really no idea what the difference would be. My guess is probably just different radio frequency used between models, if there is any. I mean, if you try to get the White Paper from Sony UK/Germany the model they have listed is the C6906, which actually weird. Usually the 6 in the end means it's a NA/US model and 03 in the end should be European/Asia LTE model. Anyway, this means there's 4 models we know of right now, providing that Negri is correct, C6902, C6906, C6943, and L39h.
Though I have to say, I'm very close to making a purchase from Clove right now. Only thing stopping me is that they don't have the purple version, which is the one I wanted the most. Of course if I can't hold on any longer and succumb to it, probably just get the white one.

Video: The Sony Xperia Z1 20.7MP camera in action!
Sony’s Xperia Z1 is the first Android smartphone with such a camera, and the pics you can take with it are world class.
While no smartphone will ever be a replacement for a dedicated camera, the Sony Xperia Z1 is about as good as it gets. The camera hardware is phenomenal, and Sony really brought their “A” game with the abundance of settings and filters you can give your shots. When you stack this up against a dedicated point-and-shoot device, the picture quality and functionality are on par with one another.
The video quality is also great, and the social media sharing capability is a wonderful real-world function. Is a world class camera enough to keep you wanting it, or has your attention been diverted by another device? For our money, the Xperia Z1 is worth strong consideration, even before we saw how sublime the camera is.

What do you think about the chances to see it being sold by AT&T?
I'm using Prepaid T-mobile at the moment, and its reception just won't cut it for me where I live.
As far as I know AT&T, seem to be the only operator able to give 4G connection right where my house is.

I thought they were all L39H, the version I'm getting is Europe and Asia - it has more LTE bands than the US Model but doesn't have the US 700 band, I don't believe that is a problem and this version will work across the globe - there might be issues with certain carriers in the US not having the 700 band like AT&T or T Mobile - not sure |

great video smclion!
@mckinley - i honestly really doubt AT&T will pick it up. If they were, they would have announced it already much like they already announced having the Note 3 available on Oct. 1st. If it does come to AT&T it will come much later, I think. My guess is if AT&T is choosing to offer a sony phone, they are already in talks for Z2 or whatever is coming at MWC next year. that's my guess, anyway.
I will wait til the end of the month and see what's available from american retailers. yesterday it was only negri, today pc connection has added it. surely, more retailers will be picking it up soon. i have a google alert set up to notify me when it happens
So, i just thought of something. I think, since the Z JUST came to T-mobile not too long ago, that agreement is essentially "cockblocking" the Z1 from coming here with everyone else.. that's my theory.
