@sponse - perhaps not the most ethical things to do, but if you have some extra cash or credit, go buy a Z1 from another sore that you know will take a return. return the defective one and keep the new one. of course, ask to inspect it before you take it home cause you "heard there were screen defects".

I have two questions, appreciate if someone can help.
1) In android, are there ways to make a big phone like z1 usable with a single hand?
Reason: I often use it in the train, standing.
The Fujitsu UI has an advantage for this, the bottom button bar has a button that makes the whole screen scroll down (and then up) for you (imagine that the top half of your screen is momentarily black, and the bottom half displays what is supposed to be on the top half - your software buttons are still in place). So you can access whatever is at the top of the screen quite confortably.
Can we add something like that in the Xperia Z1 software buttons bar?
Or are there other android tricks and tips, and does it require root (some hope for me) or bootloader unlock (out of luck for me).
I am asking because if there are, it may help my decision to go for the z1 over Fujitsu.
2) Sim lock/unlock: where is it stored and what actions can affect it?
Docomo devices are sim locked, they can unlock it for you for a cheap price.
However, i may want to do that before I root my device, as then they would not garantee it, and may pretend they cannot help with the sim unlock anymore.
But if I root it after sim unlock, does it affect the sim unlock? Can it reset it (I read somethign like this somewhere).
If you install something else like cyanogen or ubuntu touch (which I guess requires bootloader unlock, but for my curiosity), can it also reset the sim unlock?
Thanks!

@shotokan.. your first question.. i don't think there is. second question, once your phone is unlocked, it's unlocked. rooting and using custom roms won't change that. but to use custom roms i believe you need a bootloader unlock.
@anyone else with a Z1 on TMOBILE USA.
So i just switched and get LTE in my house (yay), but I'm unable to send MMS msgs! anybody else have this problem?
EDIT: nevermind, i fixed it. leaving it here if anyone else has issues, you can pm me

does Z1 charge through usb? I had my s3 plug into the usb port on my monitor before and it charges, but my Z1 doesn't seems to be doing anything. |

of course it does. it's just a lot slower than through a wall plug.

ok went to the other store, the guy has told me with all the honesty, that yes he can tell what i was talking about, but that its miner and he would have spotted it without my guidance..
he showed me another unit, and i checked it and it had it... so guess a lot of units have this minor problem..
for me, i have found my peace.. i will live with it.. and i will get back to enjoying my z1
thank you all for your support guys.. |

Its funny
DXOMARK clearly crowned Xperia Z1 for the best Video Cameraphone smartphone
and in GSMARENA in 1st test , GN3 wins ???
even when dpreview did some comparisons against LG G2
xperia Z1 was much ahead in that comparison
and Dpreview also said LG G2 is not on the same level of Xperia z1 in camera |

looks like Z1 camera is just not very user friendly. |

just got the official update through PCC and updating as I type this
oh and my mate just bought a 5s and I was comparing the whites and believe it or not his looked slightly yellow compared to my screen and also very small - the 5s is a tiny phone, we also took some pictures to compare and I gota say the Z1 did me proud - and that was before the update

I am not really impressed.. expectations about this camera were way to high I think
Expectations were high for a reason I would say. One Sony, camera-centric device, Sony's true imaging hardware (from compacts) inside mobile phone..... And you know what - ALL of it is there. The only thing lacking is optimized IP algorithm.
I'm just afraid if BOINZ mobile update doesn't come, if all this was some fairytale until new flagship comes (Z2?) in Jan/Feb.... so Z1 would be forgotten/"old" phone. Sorry for being pessimist
Cheers,
Miki

Sure, all those components are there, but the essential one was expected to be much bigger... and that is the sensor. Everything else can be amazing, but if the sensor isn't big enough to collect light, it all goes to waste.. which is what is happening here.
The expectations I had were that they were going to announce a proper camera centric smartphone with a big sensor and xenon to boot.. maybe next time. |

@cu015170, I agree with you mate, had same expectations myself. However, if you check results:
Good light: Z1, N3, G2
Low light (flash off): G2, Z1, N3
Low light (flash on):N3, Z1, G2
This is not what I expect from "camera-centric" device. And Z1 has better imaging attributes (sensor size, G lens, Bionz) than both competitors, at least on paper. So it should really wipe the floor with them. That's why I think there is still hope for further improvements via fw.
