OK guys, just a little perspective here would be good I feel.

Yes the MT/DT issue is very frustrating and I would have hoped/expected at least DT from the Hardware on release. However I do agree that the overall functionality of the phone itself doesn't seem to be diminished. From all of the early feedback from independent users and most of the reviews the overall experience does seem to be a significant "WOW" factor. This includes the Customer services lady I spoke to at Orange last week, she said her and most of her colleagues are going to be getting it as their next phone. Might explain why it now shows as Out of Stock at Orange.

http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobi[....]s/orangeRecommends/pay-monthly

I do think this encapsulates the fact that other than the hardcore techies like those of us who frequent this sort of forum, the Android Version and DT/MT will be largely forgotten as long as the overall User Experience is good.. Let's not forget that the iPhone itself has been way behind on pure Hardware specs and still is...

As for saying that there has been deceit by Sony, I think that's a bit of a stretch, I do think perhaps they should be more careful about how they let information come out..The guys who are writing on the blog seem very nice but aren't always too hot on the tech side..Equally if we are taking their comment as read re: DT/MT, I am fairly sure that they did say it would be 16M.

A number of people here have referred to the HTC Evo, but I have seen several sites stating that this will be a US only release, makes sense as 4G is it's trump card.Otherwise to me it looks like an improved HD2 with Android rather than Winmo.

However chalk one up to Sealover94 as the WSJ has been widely reported as saying that the new iPhone is coming in June, with much improved camera etc. So long as it does I would consider it.

Onestopphoneshop, on-line branch of the CPW have mailed me today offering the Black X10 on T-mo, Orange and Voda:

http://www.onestopphoneshop.c[....]filiate=emailflyer|18802|10259

Their mail also mentioned the Desire on T-Mo + Orange for £24.79 p.m. by redemption, not a bad deal eh?

So, maybe it's no bad thing that my upgrade is unlikely to be due before Summer..Still very tempted by the X10, but happy to wait off a bit and see how things shakedown. Next iPhone is really the only thing I can see that might have the beating of the X10.. Dread to think how pricey it might be though.....

@Arne, nice videos, the one on the trampoline is great. It is really clear even at Full-Screen on a 17" Laptop screen.
I feel it shows that 320p is sufficient, however nice the HD option would be.

Also I meant to say, but it has gotten lost in all of the DT/MT discussions. It seems that VAD is lacking in most Android handsets, hopefully as the MW600 uses VAD to initiate new calls and it is being bundled with the X10 in many markets, this has been overcome by SE's UX. I do hope so as this would be much more significant to me than DT/MT for use in the car. Don't fancy a £60 fine or three points, and have really enjoyed the HCB 300 I have at the moment..

Keep up the good work Arne, nice to see that the shine hasn't worn off yet....

The thing with the lack of MT/DT is that it wasn't something that was going to matter out-of-box anyway, as we all knew that the X10 was going to come with Android 1.6, which didn't support MT/DT. So the initial impressions without that functionality won't (generally) be damaged by a lack of such support.

The neglect of Sony to include MT/DT will start to rear it's ugly head over the course of the typical life of the phone, when the OS is upgraded to 2.1 (or beyond) and suddenly people have access to software they don't currently have access to (due to OS version), but that software makes extensive use of the MT/DT features that the X10 lacks. Then people may not find themselves as enamored with the phone as they initially were, especially if they bought it on contract and are stuck with it for the next year or two.

This isn't to say people should expect the hardware they buy now to be top-of-the-line and offer every feature available for the OS over the course of 2-3 years. However to my knowledge most Android phones (including even the HTC G1) have hardware MT/DT support, so for the X10 to lack such capability is a serious mis-judgement on Sony's part, and one that more than likely will become a major sticking point.

...

As for the screen hardware color depth, I'm not trusting anything unless it's from Sony and directly states in plain terms that the phone supports 16M colors. As you allude, the guys on the SE Blog seem to be a bit confused when it comes to hardware specifics.

Have been waiting for this for a while... now tempted by a T-mobile deal for a free HTC Desire 300/300 + free internet on 18 month contract... I'm out of contract now so need to find an X10 to play with soon and see if i like it otherwise i'm going desire (wich the HTC Evo was out... no brainer then... P) Hope the X10 does well, much better than that POS Satio...

No, it's simply the answer to what the man asked.

But there is no confirmation that it is 16M colors capable either and I see no reason why we should believe it is capable of anything more than it's announced for (given the recent deceive on MT issue).

Aw I'm a bit disappointed by this I was actually under the impression that it will be 16M colors capable because I'm ready to make the purchase through timtechs and I'm about to choose the Sony Xperia X10 over Sony Ericsson Vivaz. Now I'm confused again... What do you think is better among the 2? Any suggestions please?

someone on another forum reviewing this phone states:
"If anyone is interested, I can confirm that the XPERIA X10 will launch in Australia late this month with 1.6 FW.

However, it WILL be upgraded to 2.1 a short time later (as we know already) and the Timescape, Mediascape and camera applications will also be updated along with it. All three will receive new features (not specified)"

new camera app features?? Not sure how reliable the info is but we will soon find out...

and regarding the speed of the phone, 1.6 has no hardware acceleration, hence why people may think it seems slow. 2.1, however, HAS hardware acceleration, so will definately see a big jump in performance

Can someone already owning the X10 tell me, if you can turn off UMTS (3G) so that only GPRS is enabled. For me it's important, because I am often in trains which have only a GSM/GPRS repeater built in, so I am turning off 3G on my G900 for example, otherwise it tries to switch to 3G when available and the switches back, which costs battery and the connection is shortly not available.

Second question (I already asked it, but maybe someone can try it out), is it possible to use the X10 as a modem which is connected through Bluetooth with a notebook?

Thanks!

BTW: prices in Germany are about 460 EUR atm.

Nicely done I am pleased to hear TS and MS run well, how many contacts do you have loaded?

I am not impressed to hear have been sneaky & cheap using a plastic screen and yet claiming it is mineral glass! p155 poor in my opinion and yet another reason for me to question their build quality issues.
I would like to know just how prone all that shiny black plastic is to scratching, another build quality issue there I think.

The camera on any phone will only ever be as good as a toy camera can be regardless of how many mp they throw at them, but to hear the X10 flash is not up to scratch is disappointing.

I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.

It's easy to pidgeonhole the multitouch debate as a "techie" obsession that most users won't care about - nobody will notice out of the box after all - but it will become an ever more significant part of the user interface on other phones, including most other Android phones, and it will become a prerequisite of at least some of the apps X10 users will be wanting to download in the near future. The upshot is that those X10 users blindly buying the phone now as a "flaghip" device will end up being increasingly left behind over time as their hardware ages a lot faster than their friend's Nexus One or their auntie's iPhone, and that's something they will notice.

When that new must-have game at the top of the Android Appstore sales chart works fine on Billy's dusty old G1 but refuses to load on Bob's shiny new X10, Bob is going to be pissed off, and he won't be looking at Sony Ericsson phones again when that long old contract finally ends, because overall his user experience of the X10 will have been lousy and disappointing. Let's not forget that whoever's buying them, these are smartphones - they're supposed to stay smart and up to date over the course of their life, not be left idle with the same old features they came out the box with.

Say what you like about the iPhone, but at least the user experience has been consistent throughout - the original, three year old model still runs most of the same apps in the same way as the latest device, and has proven far more futureproof than the X10 is now destined to be.

I can't seem to find a source where SE claimed the X10 had a mineral glass screen. I can only find scratch resistant - which is on the official press release.

@untitled

Do you have a link to the store that has the X10 at 460EUR? Thanks mate.
