The difference is the video recording.
X1a: records at QVGA(320x240)--24fps--no h.264
X1i: records at VGA(640x480)--30fps--h.264@15fps
also:
the supported HSPA (3G) frequencies are different: X1i has a 900MHz band instead of an 850MHz band (X1a)
X1i: (900/1900/2100)
X1a: (850/1900/2100)
1900MHz is the prevalent 3G band for AT&T U.S. but they also use 850MHz in some places also (This is the risk of getting the X1i in the U.S.--you may lose 3G capability in parts of the country).
I believe the different processors dictate the differences in video, but, I don't think the processor affects which frequencies are supported. Someone correct if wrong.

I wish I was rich enough to buy both versions of the phone to utilize all 100% of the Xperia X1 capabilities. xD
T-Mobile uses 1700MHz right? if so, then the X1 can be used in the US under T-Mobile (as you can tell, I have T-Mobile).
but that sucks "X1a: records at QVGA(320x240)--24fps--no h.264"
Why the low screen size? |

@mooboo, you can unlock a WM phone by paying the operator. Generally WM phones don't get a lot of branding and can easily be restored to vanila WM.
I'm a bit concerned about which X1 we will get in Australia. The UMTS network with substantially better covereage here than others (next g) operates on 850 - so we will have a choice of an X1 and normal coverage + VGA recording, or a "Next G" capable X1 with qvga recording!
Bugger!

I was refering to any phone that is not the X1.

How you gonna carry that?
No real querty?

I think so. The x1a may not work on Next G anyway, in which case we'll only have the option of the X1i.
I'm not too worried - to date I still haven't used the next g network. I'm also not a big fan of telstra - always more expensive for less than anyone else.
But it would be typical if we did have to choose between the two limit options

Yes, you can use the X1 on T-Mobile, but, you'll get no 3G service of course.

Has something to do with patent infringement in the U.S. The X1i isn't subject to those restrictions. Any phone with the 7201 has those restrictions. |

Outdated my friend......out dated . Screen is upwards of 3.2in it seems. More like 3.5. 5Mpx no flash, 1350mah battery. Looks great imo. Oh how I wish I was rich , what the hell am I supposed to do with my E71 now
@aksd, you are a phone crackhead. Can't you just decide on one phone? First the Omnia, then the E71, now this Diamond replacement. Just get the X1i so you can be yet another individual to support my earlier stated theory on X1 lust. |

patent infringement! What a joke - so much for the great american belief in competition - "no you can't use VGA recording, someone has already patented it"
(actually it's probably more obscure an infringement than that, but you get my point)
I might try and patent something myself, like say the wheel... Then any one who wants to put wheels on stuff has to pay me royalities! Yeah baby, make me rich!

Well then!
I guess the X1i is the best choice, since it also utilizes the 1700MHz range as well AND 3G network.
Alright, expansys.com will be adding me to their pre-order list hahaha.
Thanks dude! |

You're thinking small. I'm going to patent the color blue...

Noooo. Hold on! There is no 1700MHz on any of the X1's (T-Mobile's 3G frequency). Read my posts carefully. I recommend you, at least, switch to AT&T to get 3G on the X1's.

If you add the price of all the phones you have purchased or intend to purchase soon, getting the X1 should be no problem Certainly the combined price of the Omnia and the E71 could afford you a shiny new Xperia X1. |

Ermm.....I did'nt get the Omnia, I bought the E71 instead. I've got the HTC TyTn II and E71 at the moment . E71 was like half the price of the X1, I thought if the X1 is out Nov or later its really not worth it, might as well use the E71 till early next year . Anyway let me wait till you guinea pigs buy your X1's first, may sell TyTn II and E71 if its going to be worth it.
