seems they found a bug in the video zooming

The bad news is that we found a strange bug - the Nokia N8 only starts doing that smart zooming when you are at about 2x. Before that it behaves identically to every other handset out there and looses quality

Yes they did. If you watch the video it's very evident. After 2x quality improves significantly. I hope they fix that but before that I hope they are aware of that.

interesting quote from the GSMARENA preview..

Another thing that came to our attention in the test is the fact that the N8 lens unit has almost no geometrical imperfections unlike the Pixon12 lens, which has notable barrel distortion. There's no fringing too.

so, did they not see the blurring? if it is indeed there.. would that be an imperfection? if not what else would cause it?

and another thing that bothers me is the bad review of the camera interface.. which requires double clicks and buried menus for simple camera settings.. its not gonna make me not buy the phone at all, but you just wonder why they wouldn't revamp and improve the camera interface to go with this amazing lens...

How does the N8 compare with the other cells out there? One should keep in mind, that Sony camera (the one which just had its ass kicked), is not too shabby either and yet the 'faulty' N8 come out on top. How sad
Will it be safe to say: The N8 is the best camera cell? Or is that to much to admit on ESATO?

Well if there is a problem, apparently it will be:

Update: Damian Dinning was kind enough to shed some light on the matter. As it turns out a software fix is impossible since the problem lies in the sensor’s inability to output its full 12mp resolution at 25fps. That’s why it uses binning to output a reduced resolution.

When you zoom beyond 2x however only a portion of the sensor is used and then 25fps can be achieved. With no binning you get sharper images but somewhat noisier low-light results.

And finally Damian Dinning shared that he and his team are already working on a new firmware that should provide much smoother zooming during videos.

Kind of..

Personally i dont think its much of a big issue, i rarely use zoom in any video or stills picture, but it does appear that Nokia are aware of such a bug and will fix it after the phone is released.

Btw, i had an email yesterday afternoon stating my N8 would be delivered within the next 2 weeks. So, Wednesday the 20th is when i should have my N8. Fingers crossed.

@etaab
you pre-ordered from Nokia UK site?

I had ordered from shopblt site, as they are $100 cheaper, but if I can get the phone much earlier pre-ordering with Nokia USA, i may just have to do that.

but i want a green one.. not Dark Grey and Nokia USA is dragging their ass on releasing the colors in USA

Yeah, i ordered mine from the official shop. Since i have £200 due from a friend wanting to buy my Satio i have no problems stumping up £230 for such a phone when the Satio i got free on my contract. Limited edition orange too !!

Heh, i love this bit of GSMarena's first look:

It's just that the company's philosophy with the N8 is to do as little processing as possible, giving the image a natural look, rather than going for more saturated colors and higher contrast. We thought that this approach won't produce images as appealing to the wide audience. As it turns out we were in the wrong and the Nokia imaging team really knew what they were doing.

Which is good to hear for anyone whos also read Mr Murtazin's reviews:

I would like to start with a few words that need to be said to heal the souls, all in wounds, of Nokia fans who are not capable of processing information

Basically he is claiming anyone reading the review who is a Nokia fan is stupid..

Nokia N8 has a camera of average quality or slightly better than that, but the best one can get from Nokia

Average quality huh ?

, Nokia has never had adequate camera software developers; the company hasn't devoted much attention to cameras

Ok if you say so Mr Murtazin..

Nokia believes that doesn't matter much, it is the hardware installed that matters, which implies the sensor and optics in this case. Any shortcoming in terms of picture quality will be made up for by marketing and PR, that is what the company is betting on.

He is literally an idiot for saying something which appears to go against everyone else opinion on the matter..

I hope that my samples are obvious enough to prove that the camera in Nokia N8 offers nothing extraordinary

Not really fella, anyone can shoot a crap picture and claim it was the cameras fault !

Need i post more. This guy has totally lost his marbles !
