No, it doesn't have anything to do with that. UIQ3.1, and any other version, supports any kind of resolution and input method and layout, basically. It's got more to do with the hardware- setup SE has - and the amount of work they want to put down in improving their smartphones on various layers of the software (which is apparently as little as possible).
The p1 Whiki - report your bugs, and add feature requests here. "Brothers and Sisters, believe! Believe in the salvation of Demand Paging, 'eah!" |

i really dont miss hspda on my p1i - it would be nice but the data download speeds i get with 3g are more than acceptable. although i do understand people who dont understand why SE put it on their top non-symbian phones but not the ones people are most likely to do most of there surfing on. it is probably an issue with compatibility with p-series technology on which the g-series is based. |

@mode,
You h ave some points there, however the G700 and G900 are NOT aimed at the business user, SE have stated this as not being the target market. So whilst the point is good it is not valid due to this. That's the reason for the X1. |

The G900 whitepaper states:
G900 consumer package
The exact contents of the G900 package depend
on the localization, but the basic contents are as
follows:
• G900 with one stylus
• Battery BST-33 (950mAh)
• Charger CST-70, non-cascadable
• Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-62 upgrade
• Exclusive USB cable DCU-65
• Sony Ericsson PC Suite CD, including Sony
Media Manager
• User guide, up to five language variants
depending on the market
bundled items:
GPS enabler 'Helmer (Fingal II)
Bluetooth headset HBH-PV703
Generic car holder HCH-70
does "bundled items" mean that in the consumer package will also be GPS enabler, BT head set and Generic car holder!?!?!? |

I guess that's true and did cross my mind which more or less calmed me down a bit after flipping out right after the announcement. But it doesn't erase the fact that HSDPA in the business phone/smartphone sector has too long a vacuum from the inception of the technology till X1.

Exactly. HSDPA makes more sense on X1. G series formfactor; no keyboard, a dpad, small screen. It's not a traditional business form factor. G series can really be thought of as a K series, and I'm sure we'll see a Walkman version similiar. It's a K series with an engine transplant (A200 swapped for UIQ) and racing pirelli's (touchscreen grafted on).
Ultimately I don't think lack of HSDPA in g-series will make much difference to SE chances in the market g series are aimed at. Their market expansion will continue with X1 and G series leading the fray in the the high and mid range respectively. Anyone who explicitly needs HSDPA has limited choice with SE atm and will have to go elsewhere if what's available is not suitable. But this won't stop SE increasing marketshare. Despite the disadvantage of not having HSDPA, I predict G series will be a huge sales success, possibly on the same scale or better as the success of K750.

If your on a business contract then the X1 will be free also no doubt. I also believe SE will move it's Symbian phones away from the business market perhaps. But I'm thinking along the lines of it being easier to link Windows Mobile to company networks. It's nice to see the Sybian format being changed at last, from M600 to the P1i to the G700 and G900. I still think the P5i will turn up though so big screen touch screen models with Symbian will still come out. |

Can we have a link to the white paper pls? I searched where I find the others like the W810i but cannot find any C/G series listed.
Thanks in advance.

there you go dude
A couple of cool rhings about G900 I've noticed:
*Client mode for File Transfer is back, meaning you can browse the files on another phone via BT
*USB2 is FULL USB2 ie: up to 480Mbps file transfer speeds via cable! About bloody time!
*b AND g Wifi
*"The application shortcut buttons may be
personalized by the user." Hopefully this means the noteit button can be changed.
*There is an inactivity lock, where if turned on the phone will lock after a minute and the phone lcok code needs to be entered to unlock it. There is also the normal keyguard lock if you prefer that (with a dedicated key)
*Web camera – Turns G900 into a wireless (Bluetooth
wireless technology) or USB web camera. (third party included app)
*QVGA 320x240 pixels, 30fps (been mentioned already)
*Panels interface aka X1.
Worth a mention, Play Now music service will be launched by SE soon, with many of the tracks available DRM free, so Play Now 3.0 may actually be worth investigating.

G700/G900 is a disappointment when the platform is from 2005. Why not build on new spec instead of three year old one? They want make as much money as possible. |

Why is it a disappointment, it doesn't have a 2005 platform to begin with, and secondly, don't be fooled by the touchscreen because it's not even high end if you're expecting much, much more out of it & it's the first of its kind so I'd say it is at the very least, not a disappointment. Some things might be disappointing, but I think it's far from a disappointment

Actually, while the OS is from 2005, the platform has been significantly revitalised with a finger touch interface, and not only that, the segment traditionally has hardscreen A200 platform, and now has a finger touch UIQ platform, which imho is quite a big improvement, so your argument that the platform is stale doesn't hold up.
Besides why change something just for the sake of it? When I buy new PC's for business customers, I order them with Windows XP, because that is the best OS at the moment for business use. Vista may be out there but it's not always the best choice for every situation.

Say what? Have you actually seen the g900 action? You that is from 2005? Please...
@max, i fully agree with you...in fact i think its clear the g series will replace the k series, and that is HUGE for uiq. |
