whereas the TyTN, and to some extent the M600, are stable, reliable and usable NOW!

Which is what I say in the article I have provided a link to.

yes I know, ('coz I can read )
but I wanted to emphasize it here... and I'm very annoyed with the P990 today given the problems I've had in just the last 2 hours...
The M600 was not good to start with but at least the first firmware update made a BIG difference. People really cannot be expected to pay this much for such an unreliable device.
The problem is that everyone was screaming for it and it just wasn't ready, and only time will tell if September network releases will (a) actually happen and b) be any more reliable
I now say unreservedly, if you don't need wifi or camera then get the M600 otherwise its gotta be the TyTN!

Fully agree and the M600 is 50% or less the price of the P990

I must admit that after the latest WWE FWU of the TyTN, the device has been totally stable. I share peoples frustrations aboutf the P990 but it can only get better..Problem is one always feels cheated if things do not work out of the box.. |

Ok, i've been over-excited about the next pxxx phone and have hung on, out of contract for the p990i, I've always been convinced that no other phone is about to come out that offers more. Now, after reading this thread I'm tempted to go right now to the Orange shop and pick up the Orange SPV31000 (their version of the tytn) for £100 as an upgrade on a new 12 month contract.
Is there anyone out there that thinks this is just me wanting a new device TODAY! or is this a wise choice? Will I regret it 3 months down the line when my mates have updated p990i's.
Usage for me centres around multimedia - I watch a lot of movies on my p910i and use it as my personal stereo with a 2GB stick. I do occasionally use the office applications but if the device handled this better I would probably use them more.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated . . . .
Matt
Oh, and what's the handwriting recognition like on the tytn? I LOVE it on the p910i?

Matt69 you are much like me in your usage and in my opinion the M3100 is the only way for you to go. I watch a lot of movies on my P910 but we have Smartmovie player which is not as good as TCPMP. Even the beta version of TCPMP on the P910 plays better never mind the WM5 version on a 400Mhz processor.
I have posted a question on their forum as to whether Core plan to release TCPMP for UIQ3... waiting for a reply. But the simple fact that I have to ask should lead you to go down the M3100 route. If you're watching movies I believe you can't beat TCPMP. Get more verification from Masseur as I now he's a TCPMP user.
As to mp3's the consensus I get is that the P990 is very good (better) at this but I wonder how bad can the TyTN be with good 3rd party software. |

Many Thanks, Wam7, an unbiased opinion much appreciated. The excitement was just too much - I've just got back from the Orange shop with my sleek, black spv3100. I have 14 days to make up my mind, the only things that could possibly sway me back to the p990 is if the tytn's playback speaker, mp3 software and HW recognition is pants.
Goddamn this initial charge business!! I want to play!

personally i would have got the TyTn on Tmobile rather than renewing your orange contract. Mainly because W'n'W walk is simply fantastic value that will allow you to get the most out of the device.

Personally I don't think any mobile OS has been really targetted or will for the immediate future.
For a start both Symbian (with Symbian Signed) and Windows Mobile software cannot install itself without the users consent or interaction, and secondly there is no obvious way of the virus transmitting itself between devices to spread.

@SL33PYH34D: Thanks for the response. What about virus infested email being received on the P990? Will viruses not spread that way, especially if using push email? (Suppose it will be down to the server catching the virus or am I missing something)

@Ctrl+A
if your app is not Symbian Signed then it can't get access to any important APIs therefore cannot do much damage...in theory

Thanks WelshTom, but i was with T-mobile for a few years and the reception at my house was unusable, i had to lean against a window to make calls!
I don't use the web too much on the phone so hopefully the cost won't be too much.

@Jah: OK cool! Thanks.
Am still trying to get hold of a comprehansive review, article, whatever of the TyTN. Even thier official site only has 3 pathetic 1 page pdf files.
Anyone know of a decent review where someone has gone through the paces with the TyTN (or failing that some detail it, showing screen grabs of UI, etc)
The USB 1.1 does not sound too good on the TyTN IMO. Are there other ways of docking/sync with PC other that USB?

Just found fairly decent video walkthrough of TyTN http://mobilitytoday.com/articles/htctytn_first_look.html
mmmm, not that sure if I want to move away from P990i.

I bet the p990i has not got the screen alignment issue.
Mine is really bad and enoying the more i play with it.
When i use the first half of the on screen keyboard, it works fine, but when i use the second half, the alignment is out. ie when you want to delete a word, i have to select =.
I tried the re-alignment and still the same issue.
masseur, and others, is yours the same?
Now, when i try doing a screen alignment, it now keeps doing it in a endless loop, i cant get out of it.

Are you suggesting we're a fickle bunch?

Its interesting to see people come out with the same sad old statements about windows mobile devices and I feel alot of these comments come from people who have not really experienced the WM devices to their full potential.
|
|
Yeah, you can really tell when people talk about these devices without ever having used them before. I have no idea where the whole "Windows Mobile is very unstable and needs resets" thing has come from - from my experience I'd say it is very stable indeed, and the only real issues I've ever seen is conflicts with third party software. I'm sure half the people who complain about Windows Mobile would lap it up if SE ever produced a Windows Mobile device.

I certainly don't want people to get a WM because I happen to like them. They suit me and my way of working but this may not be true of others.
|
|
Quite agree, which I guess is why a number of us have gone for both devices in order to make an informed personal decision ourselves.
|
|
yup i would definately be the 1st to lap up a SE wm5 phone... I have to stress that quality compared to SE/Nokia, etc HTC have a long way still & after the being fooled by the atom...no htc/quanta for me atleast.
regarding 990 bugs well all & literally all the smart devices have had hiccups atleast till 1/2 months of firmware updates to stabilize...
