The problems with the keyboard: I am not surprised about this I am a long time advocate of resistive screens rather than capacitive screens, I am told time and time again I am wrong BUT I have used every single member of the p*series since day one with few miss hits.
I have now tried out THREE Android handsets with Capacitive screens G1 G2 and Nexus and ALL of them give errors on a regular basis it is a problem with the technology its self NOT the X10 Capacitive screens are simply NOT as accurate as Resistive screens and anyone expecting the accuracy they have had with resistive screens is in for a shock.
I don't think you're wrong as such but I do think you're misunderstanding the issue slightly - the capacative screens you're talking about are all geared towards full finger touch interfaces, not pen input, so are designed for larger implements and bigger gestures with multitouch etc. So no, by definition they are not as accurate and precise as the resistive screens you're comparing them too, but if they were they simply wouldn't work as well.
As far as the keyboard goes, it's a simple fact that Android's attempt copies the iPhone's keyboard implementation, but lacks much of the latter's refinement. The iPhone's keyboard has featured multitouch from the outset, which makes much faster and more fluid typing possible, and it also has very effective error-correction software, which means all the inevitable typos get corrected at speed, usually before you realise you've made them. It's custom designed for fast, almost carefree input, and is a thing of beauty - I've similarly used a succession of P-series phones and other handsets with "real" keyboards, and I'm faster and have to self-correct less on the iPhone than with any of them. If the Android phones you've tried haven't been so useable, it's not because there's anything inherently wrong with capacitive screens - it's simply that Google haven't perfected their software yet, or are perhaps stimied by the various Apple patents on the technology they're trying to ape.

Just noticed an interesting little bit of info re Motorola's big release of CTIA:it's running Android 1.5!?! Seems maybe 1.6 with a adaptation and guaranteed, if not dated upgrade isn't so bad afterall?

One thing this handset does do, that plays to it's target market of the US is Push To Talk, which they seem to love...
@Goldenface: I've been thinking, depending on what you want it to do, couldn't you use one of the PSP desk stands just as a way of having it standing in Landscape.. They are quite old now, but you must be able to pick them up on Ebay? If not, I'd gladly dig mine out and send it up to you.Got it.

It's all about the market segment. That Motorola i1 with PTT doesn't really cater to us "geeks" like the X10 does. It is a rugged smartphone. People buying this probably don't care about multitouch or having the latest Android 2.X specs...where as those buying the X10 do (which is why SE is going to offer the upgrade in Q3).
From my experience, the PTT segment has lost some of its popularity amongst the mainstream, but its still a hit amongst those who work outside in rough environments ie. construction, logistics, etc.

China sucks! China doesn't get the X10 at all!! Maybe because they block facebook/Twitter/youtube/google docs and are in a big dispute with google, but that's not the point! I might have to wait till I fly back to the UK to get an Orange locked White X10 and wait weeks to be able to unlock it.. why god? why?

Because ive been in this thread since day one, i feel compelled at this point, BAIT BAIT BAIT!!!
so, seal i tried to sit back and not defend your antics for the last few months but the new heads in this thread werent around and/or were too lazy to see how much you kept this thread moving before 1000 samples were sprinkled all over the world to have millions of videos and previews.
now time is a great equalizer however, i couldnt wait and got a N900 only cuz of the keyboard, but it turns out Maemo is better than Android in terms of usefulness akin to a desktop which suits MY needs better. not to say that he 900 is a better device than the X10 thats not what this is about. what this IS about however is that while most of you will buy this phone, why else would you be in this thread everyday, is that seal was right. as SOON as the X10 is released the EVO 4G is on its way out of HTC Labs, BRUTAL. just nice BRUTAL it, the X10 merely has pixel density over the EVO4G and thats not too far off. June 4, 2009 is when we first saw Rachel in CG renders, a paltry 10 months (short by 2 weeks) later the X10 is in users hands. As much as i loved this phone back in 2009 and i mean i LOVED this phone in 2009, it has passed its prime it was on top for all of 2/3 days ... HTC put in a HDMI connector i mean honestly! Android 2.1 Sense, this is just embarassing.
To seal who told everyone to save and wait, thats f**ked up, there will ALWAYS be something new and improved, but what a mightily swinging dick this is on the CHIN of SE. holy cow!
im not even gonna buy either of these devices, as im now under the merciless whim of nokia/intel and meego (ill never go back to bein locked in again) but if i was and i have a choice, the X10 has the looks but man the EVO4G is one sexy peice of KIT.
man, sorry for the minor distraction, if its even a distraction but i felt strongly about this device at one point too, check back to the first 100+ pages, but this would eat in my craw. good luck esatoans. if i worked at SE this would NEVER, i mean NEVER happen.
dual sdxc slots all day, err day! id have you all livin in technirvana constantly updating every 12 months regularly. so youd know that the upgrade was coming and when, and plan accordingly. but damn HTC pushing pedal to the metal, and itll only get worse, at least this time SE isnt so far behind, its just that they are still behind.
i still like the X10 though. its just harder to justify owning with the EVO4G closer than the X10 was at announcement ... |
