arnoldc - Point taken.
-However, does this not highlight a fundamental flaw with the fundraising efforts thus far. Namely, too low profile (Yes, I know I keep banging on about it... but I'm in the business of marketing, so please forgive me).
If you are doing something to help raise funds, surely it would be a good idea to publicize the fact? By doing so, you might inspire others to do the same; you help generate momentum and ensure the issue does not fade away, as well as keeping up moral.
i.e. Keep us Informed - its a good thing. |

I must agree with you Wuz, although in my company we don't need to rely on marketing, situations like this need to be shoved right in peoples faces before they will stand up and take note, if you want to talk about the issue fading away, compare today with last thursday, (the 5th), there were nearly 40 posts in this thread by this time then, it's not hard to count many there have been today, and we've got about half of them between us!! |

jamiescott - Absolutely.
I can understand Laffen's reluctance to make too much of the appeal; its a thin line between raising awareness and overkill. That said, if the situation really is as dire as being suggested, I can' help but feel a 'nothing to lose' approach is worth adopting, in the weeks/days (?) remaining. |

if, as you say, most people are here for the freebies, then that in itself is the problem in a nutshell. nothing is totally free. if people are after logos and ringtones then why not put a charge on them? look how much people charge for nokia ringtones etc. £1.50/ringtone is a very common price. those sites/companies are making some very healthy profits out of doing nothing else. i'm not suggesting for one minute that we should, or laffen would, consider per download charges; but something has to give.
how many of us couldn't believe our luck when we found a site that gave us everything we wanted, and then we found we weren't going to pay for any of it, thought we were dreaming? the dream is rapidly turning into a nightmare. if some people who are only into esato for as many free downloads as they can manage decide not to bother anymore, then what has the site really lost?

@Black Cat
if laffen gave a 3 month free subscription and then say "pay or leave". The thing that most of the people would do was to create a new member account and get 3 more months free. Easy! |

While we are at it... how about dismissing the whole membership debate completely?
In order to host a subsciption site you need a fund (+ strategy) to attract new users via advertising (otherwise you gradually go bust as existing members begin to fail to renew their subscriptions). If Laffen had this budget available, he would not have been posting warnings about 'no funds left' etc...
A membership site is a totally different proposition to Esato in its current format. Lets just forget it shall we? |

in order to raise awareness why not email all members letting them know of the plight- if even a fraction respond it would make a massive difference?
seems like a pretty simple way of getting the message across- could just use the first post in this thread from laffen as it seems to sum up the situation quite well. |

@black cat, right now yes. we need to ramp up though on the next philippine sony ericsson user group meeting. let me highlight though that this is just the effort we're having in the philippines. we've setup different accounts accepting donations for esato, and will be pooled and sent to laffen in one big bunch to minimize foreign exchange loss (our currency is not doing well against the dollar) and stupendous bank charges. |

Black Cat - Did I offend or come across as a know-it-all?... I didn't mean to & am sorry if I did.
I have some ideas to input simply because I run several companies - but I don't claim to have all the answers. I'd hate to think anything I've written caused anyone to stop contributing - especially someone as obviously dedicated to the cause as yourself.

sorry wuz, having a bad day at work!
just out of curiosity, what would the implications of charging for ringtones/logos etc. in some form, whilst leaving membership free be?

laffen - nice idea with the logos etc. its probably the only way to make the freebie hunters pay any attention to whats happening. will they be coming back on line at certain times only, or are they having an extended break?

Blackcat - That depends on a no. of factors:
i.e.
- cost of maintaining these services
- no. of visitors who use the site for these services (c.f info/chat)
- How these services compare to the comptetion.
- Possible charges that can be levied for using these services V amounts of monies needed to keep the site going.
Answers to the above would help determine whether this is a possibility. |
