Excellent and helpful thread this, keep threads like this coming!

It seems after updating my K800i to the latest firmware version that typing bug from the initial release firmware version still seems to be there, and only affects the 2/abc key, none of the others! Unless of course my phone's got a slight fault there....

Other finding on R1JC002, updated via Wotan:
Now you CANNOT view SVG files from file manager anymore! In all previous f/w, when you had svg wallpapers kept in Picture folder, you could view them without problem. The phone would launch the internet browser and displayed the svg files there, which is strange actually, why it launches internet browser, unlike when previewing jpeg or gif files. On R1JC002, when you want to view the file, the phone launches the browser and displays NOTHING, just WHITE SCREEN. The only way to view svg file is by setting it as your standby wallpaper. But, the phone speed is slightly reduced when you use svg as the wallpaper.

I just used the SEUS on my Orange phone and it's now been updated to R1GB001.

Just thought I'd post so the original poster can update the "SEUS will currently install the following firmware revisions for UK phone brands:" part of the original post

I have a major problem since updating to R1GB001 on my Orange phone using the SEUS. When the fade is used at any time, pressing a button (which would normally bring fade the screen back to full brightness) doesn't work, it just stays dark and I can hardly read the text on the screen. I've also noticed that when the fade should be happening, it doesn't any more, it just goes straight from bright to dark.

I can go to options and change the brightness from 80% back to 100% and that works fine but as soon as it tries to fade, it screws up again :/

What can I do?

Flash it again using SEUS. Because of the nature of these flashing services you can run into problems from time to time. If another flash does not fix it then you'll have to take it to a Sony Ericsson Service Center and let them take a look at it.

I re-flashed and it is still screwed.

God damn it, this is really annoying, I am going Nokia when my contract runs out. I had SUES firmware problems with my K750i last year too.

Where is a list of the Sony Ericsson Service Centers?

there are no SE service center in the UK, just take the phone back to the shop you got it from. If you got your phone direct from orange, take it to an orange store with your proof of purchase.

Before you do that though, use my phone explorer to back up your data and try a master reset, see it that fixes it

Orange will end up charging me and/or keeping it for days/weeks, such an annoyance and master reset didn't help either

Bummer...

There is one SE centre left in the UK.

This is the official SE service centre which SE tell you to send it to when you have a problem. I have already sent a K800i with an erom problem to them and recieved it back about 5 days later working fine, at no charge as it was under warranty.

The address is

Freepost NATW1026
Kuehne + Nagel
Unit 2A
Appletree Road
Chipping Warden
Banbury
OX17 1LL

I'd recommend sending it special delivery though (Roughly £4.50)

Do I not take it to Orange? (I am mid-way through a contract)

What do I send to them?

How can I ensure I'll get it back?

How can I back myself up in case there is no evidence of it being there? (a recorded delivery receipt won't be enough)

Would they repair it if I just sent it them?

What do I include in the cover letter?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I used the Sony Ericsson Update Service to update my Orange-branded Sony Ericsson K800i (I am mid-way through a contract) which appeared to go through fine (I have used the software to update my Sony Ericsson K750i many times successfully) but upon putting the SIM card/battery back in and turning the phone on, I have discovered the screen backlight system is damaged (not physically).

When the phone is usually locked or goes to standby, the screen goes dark and eventually switches off (unless ‘Sleep mode clock’ is on) and when you unlock the phone, it goes back to the brightness setting you set from inside the display settings menu, but since the update, mine does not do this. When the screen goes dark now, it stays that way whether you unlock the phone or not. I can set the brightness back to 100% within the display settings but as soon as the screen fades out (standby, locked etc.), it stays at that level until I find my way back into the display settings menu and change the level.

I have included the handset with battery but no SIM card. I hope this is enough and if there are any problems, feel free to contact me.

Yours faithfully,

E. Bridgewater.

My findings with R1J so far:

- Much snappier all round. Deletes long lists of SMS mega quick now.
- Using keypad as number shortcuts (i.e. instead of using the stick) doesn't work in file browser, you get ABC search instead which doesn't work
- Top screen buttons: the left button opens the full screen picture viewer as it should but won't let you navigate only the top right button works in this mode
- Video still crap but seems much improved
- Thank God! My clock/calendar has stopped resetting to day zero after snoozing more than twice or switching off with a mega low battery. That was driving me mad.
- Still has that awful new MMS creator

In all quite pleased as it's fixed more than it's broke.

The new MMS editor is a great improvement as far as I am concerned.

When you say "a" button KM which one are you pressing? I've updated my Orange K800i to R1GB001 via SEUS and it works fine. The only button I can use to bring the phone brightness back when it's gone into standby is the "back" button. Do none of yours work?
