I haven't checked out the omnia, but I know I was quite impressed with the i780 I picked up recently. $700 for a wifi, hsdpa, qvga (actually 320x320) display, qvga video, 2mp cam 256/128MB memory, 400MHz processor etc. in an ultra thin formfactor. Okay I know it's not state of the art, but it's excellent value for money, compared to the $1000 plus that most other WM phones in the market.

MAX, here is the little extra you are missing for your money:
$100 - 800x480 display
$ 70 - 3" inch display
$ 50 - Full Querty Keyboard
$ 35 - 500 Mhz Processor
$ 20 - 128/512 mb rom/ram
$ 15 - Quad band
$ 15 - HSPDA 7.2 mbps
$ 10 - Standar mini USB
$ 25 - 3.15 Mp, autofocus, flash
$ 15 - FM radio
$ 15 - Motion Sensor
$ 20 - Brush metal construction
$ ?? - 10 hrs battery I would pay for it
$ ?? - Front face 110.5x 52.6 I would pay for it

$370 - If you keep it for 2 years comes to less than $0.50
$700+$370 = $1070 I willing to wait for it

I already have AT&T with contract could be as low $400. What A BARGAIN!!

@pinguino2

Max is talking about AUD I presume.

Make your calculations but I feel an extra 3 month wait and you have WM7, fully touch friendly, Open GL 2 support, Multi Touch, Processors that have capabilities for HD playback and a more powerful OS that allows running of IDE's etc., now that I can use for 2 years. THe X1 hardly has anything that warrants a payment for another 1000USD over my HTC TyTn II which runs on an identical platfrom, the only advantage being the screen imo, and this technology I've been using for a year now, use the same technology for another two years, BWAHAHAHAHAH! no way.

I dont think the X1 will be out on AT&T as they've already mentioned they're stocking the Touch Pro as the AT&T Fuze.

The weakset link the the X1 is the processor. Did you try out the game I sent you? The phone may be suitable to you and many more, good for all of you. But some of us dead zone types want more for the kind of money SE are selling the phone at. Its all about requirement. You cant understand my requirement or any of the power users here, so its pointless in defending the X1, with me at least. I know what it does and its just not enough for late 2008

With all the frequent visits by people denouncing the X1, I would think, down inside, they really want one...

@aksd:
BengalBoy isn't on the X1 thread right now. Later, I'll ask him to install the game (depends on if he wants to do all of that tweaking) since he has the latest ROM now.

tut...tut WHybe I'm not denouncing the X1, I'm denouncing the processor. If the the X1 had the OMAP 2420, hell! I'd be dancing round it, praying to it, the works . I'd be so happy I'd buy you one as well. Pity its not to be .

So what if he has the latest ROM? The tweaking is to get the game running on the X1, all we're doing is using the phones libgles so that it works.

Are you daft? I want an X1.......

One more thing, if WM7 uses OpenGL 2.0 like I've heard then you cant install WM7 on your handset no matter what. The processor does'nt support OpenGL 2.0 let alone 1.1. And as per the leaked Mwg roadmap they're releasing the first WM7 phone this December and the next in Jan, maybe delayed though, knowing microsoft

I see what you are saying. That's the eternal dilema. Technology cycles are shorter every time. There is a break through every 3 months. If I were waiting for the next better one I would still be using DOS (some young kids here may think is the Department of State)

So long time ago I made the decision to change WHEN I NEED IT to change regardles. Unfortunatelly this time I made the decision in February 10 when Sony announced the Xperia.

So I skip everything. Now you tell me to wait for the next wave of WM7's, Android's etc. I value your advice but I bet we wont see full functioning products by mid 2009. And you know what? By that time we will be crossing another threshhold.

My vision is that the better things that are coming are not even in our imagination. That's exciting!!! How come they call us the DEAD ZONE PEOPLE?

btw. Don't tell me that AT&T won't carry the X1. Not too many choices in the USA. I can't see myself with the CDMA crowd and T-MOBILE is not very appealing.

I'll move to Europe.

They're releasing WM7 so soon? Link us to some details please

Doesn't make too much sense that Microsoft would obsolete almost every WM device on the market by requiring features that none of them have. That's market suicide. Are they that confident that those few upcoming WM7 ready devices will take the smartphone market by storm?

If they are using the camera to enable gesture control in non-accelerometer devices, that means that at least they have some of the older WM machines in mind.

Eh? It's a new smartphone OS, it'll be released on new smartphones, what's so suicidal or strange about that? Does Nokia retrofit all their old phones with each new iteration of S60? Of course not.

Whether the X1 is capable of running WM7 or not really makes no difference to Microsoft - as long as there are other good models in the works that it can make an impressive debut on (and of course there are) WM7 will do just fine. The X1's capabilities are purely a matter for SE's calculations; they may well have figured out that bringing out a separate WM7-powered X2 next year was better business sense.

The fact for Microsoft is that, if WM is going to compete with the Iphone OS on multimedia etc, it has to take things up a notch. My feeling is that means something more than the fairly questionable processors in the current crop of HTC phones (the X1 included).

That's hitting the nail on the head. The X1's platform, that HTC internal design with the Qualcomm 72xx at its heart, has been around in various guises for a year or more. And it's ok, I mean, the Tytn II has been a great phone for me over the last year, but - it's not perfect. The processor is a definite weak point, and there's no way that little 128mhz speed boost is going to make any real difference there.

As aksd says, it's AUD. Anyway, I'm not proposing that the Samsung i780 is better value for money than some of the high end WM devices, only that it's good value for a low end WM device (given that I wanted to spend as little as possible for something useful to tide me over for the next year - after that I'll be ready to spend up to $1500 (AUD).

btw, the i780 has full qwerty, also I'm running on real vga. (runs at a smaller dpi so you get more screen realestate.

For me given that I haven't seen the WM phone that's small enough to serve as my one and only phone, I'm still running both a A200 handset as well as the WM handset that I carry in my laptop bag or if I'm not carrying the laptop just in my backpack.

So my K800 serves as a decent camera, although recently I've been using the W910, and probably will hang out until I get my next WM phone and just put up with the 2MP non-af for the time being ( I love the size and design of the W910). So that means I have the nice large screen of the W910, HSDPA 7.6Mbps (to use with laptop), A2DP for music (for in car audio), video playing, 8GB memory card without having to turn to the pda. Then when I need it I can pull the pda out for word etc, better video playback, wifi, qwerty, and email.

(I synch all contacts, tasks, notes between all three - laptop, w910 and pda - so I can interchange between the W910 and Samsung for pda functions)

The X1 is small, also the Touch Pro but I want to wait until I handle one to decide if I could carry one around in my pocket all day and not get the shits with the bulk of it.

Why are you waiting for the X1 then? Buy the Pro, its going to be out on AT&T anytime soon, certian AT&T insiders have mentioned that the X1 might not release on AT&T only T-Mobile but once unlocked you can use it on AT&T.

WhyBe why does everything have to be spoonfed to you? I spend half the time looking for links for you. Its getting to be a major pain in the arse. dont you know how to use google?
here you go anyway but this is the last time, next time search for something if you have a doubt like the rest of us: http://phonereport.info/2008/[....]f-this-year-with-mwg-flame-ii/
http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/05/09/mwg.roadmap.leak/
http://www.unwiredview.com/20[....]tom4-iris-walkpc-vix-graphite/
BTW: I've mentioned this before and linked it in my earlier posts. Cant help it if you're as blind as a bat.

Does your P910 or whatever you use run on UIQ3.0? I take that as a no. See how simple it is to answer your own stupid questions.

So what if they have cameras, stop being stupid and face reality. IF WM7 requires OpenGL1.1 or 2.0 how many every cameras you have on your phone wont get it to work. Cameras are not going to be motion sensor control but gesture sensors, theres a difference. If they have older devices in mind or not is another thing. Maybe older devices will be able to run WM but without any of the fancy animations etc. Like Vista on older cards, no Aero.

WM was never intended for mass market. And I dont need someone who has never owned a WM phone telling me "Yes it is, Yes it is" just because SE have decided to plonk a fancy app on a WM phone and sell it. Thats plain stupidity. WM is a niche solution, anybody who has been enthusiastic about the cellphone industry for sometime can tell you that. One day whyBe wakes up and thinks "Hey! I want a WM phone" then WM suddenly just does'nt become mass market.

AT&T (850/1900) and T-Mobile (1700) 3G frequencies don't match (in the U.S.).

Either way, the Touch Pro is certainly coming to AT&T.

Just for the record, Aksd's statement did not require links or lack in any credibility, because what he referred to was common knowledge, at least amongst those with an interest in WM. If that doesn't include you, and you're not interested in making the effort to research the subject, then more fool you. It certainly explains some of your misguided enthusiasm for the humdrum X1.

Wasn't accusing aksd of being incredulous. Just, in general, I think it is more efficient to provide links for us stupid people. You should not assume everyone shares your WM omniscience.

There are tons of smartphones I find to be humdrum...I have yet to post in any of their respective threads

@WhyBe

Most WM enthusiasts who post on this thread will agree that I've been quite patient answering your questions, sometimes answering the same questions over and over again(however inane they are), what irritated me is twice before I have posted about the Mwg WM7, to show you that WM7 is just around the corner. You should'nt be asking me if I'm taking my meds, you should make sure you're not on pot or some similar substance.

The decent answer in bold, is being optimistic, its most probably not reality. You dont see backward compatibility in Symbian or in large upgrades in WM. WM5 to WM6 to WM6.1 is'nt a huge upgrade they all use Windows CE 5(do you need a link for this info as well?)

Dont you think its strange, that most WM users are planning on skipping the X1? Does that makes us all illogical and X1 haters and you the most logical person out there?

Anyway I've had enough of repeating myself on this thread.

Can I just say, this is getting tiresome too. You know why I'm posting in this thread? Because it interests me. It interests me because in the past I've liked SE phones, and this is SE's great white hope for the future, it interests me because the X1 is very closely related to the Tytn II I've been using for the last year, and it interests me because nobody quite knows how good or bad this phone is going to be yet. It might be released tomorrow and turn out to be amazing, but of course it might be released in January and turn out to be nothing more than a buggy, poor copy of the Touch Pro. The truth is none of us can be sure, and that makes things interesting.

But am I here because I'm interested in buying this phone? No. Should I be? Double no. This is a discussion forum, and were here to discuss, not prat about like giddy-eyed fanboys in an Iphone queue. You can do that for the rest of us.

And just for the record - the "SEX1" schtick is getting old too. It was mildly amusing back in February or whenever it was this phone was announced, but it's oh-so-tired now...
